POPSPresident Obama Yes, if he will do this during his campaign, imagine what he will try to do during his presidency.

POPSWestmoreland calls Obama ‘uppity' Absolutely amazing. To speak in such a snobbish/old money way, would not be tolerated at this level by Australians. A part of the culture that should be changed. And to further show ignorance, L W is shepherded into a world of name calling.

POPSProfanity Immunity I'd LOVE to have immunity on CM but heck lemme address what I think is "kinky" about GOP "family values" instead of the dreaded F word. (and I meant fudge) I find it profane that they are busy wasting people's lives and treasure on a war for political and oil industry profit. I find it obscene they they have bankrupted the government to pay for tax breaks for the rich, corporate welfare and an insane cold war military style buildup. I find it dirty that they have ignored the Constitution. I find it immoral that they tell us what we really need are some "moral values" issues to shroud their wickedness in Godliness; to keep what they are really up to out of sight and out of mind and out of the news at all costs. I find poverty offensive. I find injustice, racism, sexism, and homophobia offensive. But most of all I find the greed of empire offensive. Oh, F U D G E . . .

POPS The 26th Of July Movement Cubans to fight in the Cuban revolution for the overthrow of Batista. During that period, Castro also met Ernesto "Che" Guevara, who joined their forces. They were trained by Alberto Bayo, a former military leader of the failed "loyalists" in the Spanish Civil War. The group trained in Mexico under the leadership of Fidel Castro and returned to Cuba in November 1956, on a small yacht named Granma. They hoped their landing in Eastern Cuba would coincide with planned uprisings in the cities and a general strike, coordinated by the llano wing of the 26th of July Movement. It was their intention to launch an armed offensive and swiftly topple the Batista government. There was another group of revolutionaries, who carried out the most dramatic act of the Revolution since the Moncada Barracks attack of 1953. This second group of revolutionaries were members of the decidedly anticommunist, Student Revolutionary Directorate (RD; Directorio Revolucionario)

POPSHigher Learning earns a BS degree.
The stifling effect of racism and sexism allegations has led some to extremes. Richard Peltz, an award-winning law professor at the University of Arkansas, felt trapped by accusations of racism. Peltz had alienated some of his black students in the following fashion: 1) he participated in a panel discussion on affirmative action and argued against it, 2) he displayed in class a satirical article from The Onion that mentioned, among other things, Rosa Parks’s death 3) he illustrated the unfairness of affirmative action policies by offering to give all minority students an extra point on a test just for signing a form. It would appear that learning has been reduced to indoctrinating students into a pre-set ideologies. Any deviation from the PRACTICED NORM is met with opposition. I thought learning was best nurtured in an environment that did not stifle alternative viewpoints but actually encouraged such. Apparently only alternative thoughts are welcomed sound reaso

POPSChristian Science Monitor on Reverend Wright - Did Obama's Pastor Preach Hate?
What people hear depends on their own experience and worldview, says Teresa Brown, who teaches the art of preaching at Emory U. in Atlanta. "I listen to 60 sermons a week by black and white pastors, you can find something in almost any one that is offensive to somebody." The key as to whether language is hate speech lies in a preacher's overall message, according to Martin Marty, of the University of Chicago Divinity School and renowned historian of religion. Dr. Marty, who has visited Trinity many times, says, "If Wright only had whites in his searchlight, you might call it . But he goes after the men in his church" about fatherhood, he puts himself and his people under the prophetic spotlight. "The black church took the distorted version of Christianity that provided the religious justification for slavery, carved out the racist elements ..and implanted new content that actually moved Christianity in this country closer to Jesus' message," says Dr. Braxton.

POPSThe Speech That Revealed So Much Wright's comments needed to be addressed for what they are, but instead, Obama embraced Wright as a symbol of the "black community." In addition, equating Wright's comments delivered to a modern-day audience with those of his 86-year-old grandmother is insulting. His grandmother came from a different era and was not at the pulpit or on video delivering hate speech. One final note... The really frustrating part of the speech, other than the words themselves, was some of the analysis that followed. All of the analysts on FOX News seemed to be like deer caught in the headlights of a "racial police" Hummer. They seemed afraid to say anything that could be perceived as offensive. HELLO!!!! The speech was so blatantly political and so easy to dissect and yet they let it pass. Obama made excuses for Wright and continued to play the race card. Yet he got a pass. That is pathetic.

POPSHow "Gay" Became The Insult Of Choice 'I have interviewed scores of school kids about this and they are always emphatic that it has nothing at all to do with hostility to homosexuals,' says Mr Thorne, compiler of the Dictionary of Contemporary Slang. 'It is nearly always used in contexts where sexual orientation and sexuality are completely irrelevant.'" Sorry, I'm not buying it and I personally find it very offensive. Just go back to the list and see the insults; they are all directed towards either gays or women.

POPSDownside To Technology I clipped this story a while back from the NY times. There is also an interesting segment about freedom of speech on Dr. Phil's website. I recommend watching the whole show.

POPSAnn Coulter Reveals Herself To Be An Anti-Semitic Bigot Giving her a platform to sell books with the knowledge that she is a racist, bigoted anti-semite who could very well spout reprehensible and offensive garbage like this anytime she is on the air is at best stupid and at worst unprincipled. Her noxious words can only encourage white supremacists and Nazis and the people should let network executives know this. This country has a strange sense of what's indecent and obscene; we deny condoms to drug addicts and execute teenagers but allow despicable pieces of garbage like Coulter to thrive.

POPSStrange Laws While this is occurring half-way around the world from where I sit and has no real impact on my life, I still find it interesting because of the implecations to religious thought here. No direct correlation exists as far as blasphemy laws here in the States (yet!) but it does point to the cultural bias against religious criticism here in the US.

POPSHip-hop battles the Hill Good for them, they should defend their right to free speech. If you don't like it, don't listen. Music doesn't hurt or kill people, people kill people.

POPSNow Bush says Iraq IS like Vietnam... Bush will say just about ANYTHING to keep his war going, going going. It is so obvious, he wants his despicable war to continue until the end of his incumbency, so he can dump it in someone else's lap and I'm sure he's hoping that someone will be a Democrat. Then perhaps all the blame of this sad, quagmire of a war will not be associated with his name in the history books... That's what HE THINKS!

POPSTin Tin banned in England? Books are reflections of their times- an innocent illustration in one decade might be regarded as prejudicial and offensive in another. While I've never been a fan of Tintin myself, the group does need to admit that the illustrations in the comic/graphic novel are not unlike the illustrations in other books that came before and after it. One of my favourite contriversial books would come decades later- William Steig's Sylvester and the Magic Pebble. A sad but later heart warming story that can teach us how we need to be careful what we wish for... as well as what animals we choose to depict policemen , food the animals should eat and parents should always watch over their children ... but it's such an innocent story! ... and don't get started on Maurice Sendak :(
