POPSU.S.Treasury's Kashkari to Lead Bank Bailout Office (Update1) ``We need to think through what's the best for securities, for loans, to help strengthen the balance sheet of the institutions.'' Anthony Ryan, the Treasury's acting undersecretary for domestic finance, said in an interview today on CNBC. ``We are focusing on the broader issues, the mortgage- related assets.'' Senate confirmation is required to fill the position for which Kashkari will be nominated. The Treasury hasn't specified the length of Kashkari's tenure, or whether the White House would nominate him officially. The Bush administration remains in office until January. POPSObama Campaign Text Msg: Watch The Debate On CNN First, can you imagine the heartbreak at MSNBC? I mean, the Olbermann network has been trying so hard to be the Obama Network, and then to get this punch in the gut! :( Second, can you imagine what would have been the reaction if John McCain had texted his supporters, saying, "Watch Fox"? Well, the roof would have caved in, media-criticism-wise. Looks like the campaign figured out how to speak SMS short-hand and thus free up enough characters to type out "any of the major networks or cable" vs. "CNN." :)

POPSOur Politicians are not Leaders Leaders lead. They do what's right, not what saves their political hides. The inmates are now officially running the asylum. Idiots. And shame on all those who wrote complaining. Now you might actually get to feel a real depression. Good Luck.

POPSPalin is Scary She has officially moved into the realm of truly frightening. I used to believe I could vote for McCain but that has become impossible. Palin should not be allowed near the White House let alone within a heartbeat of the Presidency. This interview should not have been difficult (Katie is no Sam Donaldson) or surprising (do you think you might get asked about something you have been repeatedly asked about). She did not rise to the level of small town mayor or governor, let alone Vice President

POPSPot Advocates Fired Up by Hill Salute to Legal Booze This item, penned by Roll Call's Emily Heil and Elizabeth Brotherton, has a lighthearted tone, but it underscores that alcohol distributors, as we noted here http://www.forbes.com/businessinthebeltway/2006/05/08/beer-tradegroup-lobby-cx_atg_0509beer.html a few years back, are a serious force inside the Beltway. The legislation passed last week lauds legal liquor's generation of "billions of dollars in Federal and Sales tax revenues" annually. With the red ink flood in Washington, maybe legal pot will get a harder look from Congress.

POPSGeorgia's war planning questioned Similarly, soldiers who fought in South Ossetia suggest that decisions about Georgian army movements were made on the fly. At worst, a proxy confrontation with Russian forces -- akin to the first South Ossetian conflict in 1991-1992 -- was considered, said Georgian National Security Council Secretary Alexander Lomaia. After the debacle of Russia’s two wars in Chechnya, no one thought that Moscow would further risk its international reputation by invading a sovereign country, said Deputy Defense Minister Batu Kutelia. "We expected that the Russians would fight with the hands of the separatists," Lomaia told EurasiaNet.

POPSLeaving it for the next President They will leave all the debt from the takeover of Fannie and Freddie off the budget this year, effectively hiding it's impact for now and hoping for some miracle???? Meantime, we, the taxpayers are losing our home, or watching the value of our home fall, AND are liable to huge future taxes to cover the bad debt. Whoever wins this election is taking on a house of cards.
