Questioning Someone Else's Debt
dmegivern
by dmegivern  10-1-2008    8
I almost wish dulios had not told me about the snarky comments on Clipmarks related to my indebtedness. It's called student loans. Since when are they supposed to be embarrassing? Just because my parents could not pay for me to go to college, I am supposed to be ashamed? And of course, without child support or any contributions, I raised my two youngest siblings for seven years. Sometimes I had to borrow more money in student loans to support them. I was 25 and in graduate school with custody of my 13 year old sister, and the next year getting custody of my 12 year old brother. Where else was I supposed to get money? My story is in the clipped book as Chapter 7.

Bailout: Making A Deal With The Devil
merrie
by merrie  9-30-2008    1
But something funny happened on the way to the printing press. Our leaders maintain that without this bailout consumers will not be able to borrow money to buy cars. So what is wrong with that? We already have plenty of cars, and if we are broke, why do we need to buy more? Instead, we need drive our old cars longer, pay off our underwater auto loans, and produce more cars for export. It is also argued that without access to credit parents will not be able to borrow money to send their kids to school. That's fine by me as it will force Universities to reduce tuitions to levels families can actually afford. They will either have to cut out all of that bureaucratic fat, or go out of business for lack of customers. In the end it is impossible for the American economy to be rebuilt on a sounder foundation of savings and production without a lot of economic pain. Government efforts to reinforce the shaky foundation of borrowing will result in the entire structure falling down a

Meet Satish Kumar (a diamond geezer)
cakebelly
by cakebelly  9-21-2008
In 1973, he settled in England, taking an Editorship of Resurgence magazine. He has been the editor ever since (30 + years!). He is the guiding spirit behind a number of ecological, spiritual and educational ventures in Britain. He founded the Small School in Hartland, a pioneering secondary school (aged 11-16), which brings into its curriculum ecological and spiritual values. In 1991, Schumacher College, a residential international center for the study of ecological and spiritual values, was founded, of which he is the Director of Programme. Following Indian tradition, in his fiftieth year, he undertook another pilgrimage: again carrying no money, he walked 2,000 miles to the holy places of Britain — Glastonbury, Canterbury, Lindisfarne and Iona. Meeting old friends and making new ones along the way, this pilgrimage was a celebration of his love of life and nature. In July 2000, Satish Kumar was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Education from the University of Plymouth. In July

On the Fringe
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  9-18-2008    1
One of many articles examining this far right Christian Dominionist sect that appears to be growing in number as members of Pentecostal churches split off looking for more "active" ways to force Christianity on the country. Their goal is to establish a Christian Theocracy in the US in preparation for the Apocalypse. Organizations such as the Southern Poverty Law Center fear that they may soon move beyond mere talk to armed action.

Newborn Baby Found Alive in Trash Can at Phoenix Middle School
jatfla

This is so very, very sad but not surprising. I'm sure it is not an uncommon incident. Is this the fruits of all those years of sex educations in our schools? How many now?? Yes, I know it's not just the schools; sex is promoted...hello!!! *promoted* to our young ones at every turn. Pretty soon they'll be following the ways of the ancient/decadent/hedonistic world...throw them into the river or sacrifice them to their god. In this case, the god of stupidity, selfishness and self-gratification.

Barbies For War!
debbyski
by debbyski  9-17-2008    4
Anne Heche’s mother, Nancy, talked about her distress when her daughter told her she was involved with Ellen. Jeff Johnston told me he had “a struggle” with homosexuality “for a season,” but is now “happily married with three boys.” (Books for sale there included “Mommy, Why Are They Holding Hands?” and “You Don’t Have to Be Gay.”) “We are one Supreme Court justice away from overturning Roe v. Wade,” he excitedly told me. R. D. Levno, a retired school principal, flew in from Fairbanks. “She’s a child, inexperienced and simplistic,” she said of Sarah. “It’s taking us back to junior high school. She’s one of the popular girls, but one of the mean girls. She is seductive, but she is invented.” I KNEW she reminded me of a "Heather"
