POPSYouth, violence, illiteracy The lack of functional literacy is blamed for violence amongst young people, leaving them unable to respond effectively emotionally laden situations. It is suggested that an emphasis on testing and targets leads to teachers providing a minimal imput wrt literacy skills.

POPSThe Wrong Question “Natural capital” (minerals, croplands, etc.) and “produced capital” (factories, roads, and so on) account for less than a quarter of the planet’s wealth. In America, intangible capital — the stuff in our heads, our hearts, and our books — accounts for 82 percent of our wealth. In large measure our wealth isn’t the product of capitalism, it is capitalism.

POPSThe Great Depression Hoax Are we a nation of whiners, as Phil Gramm put it a little while ago? No, the American public is not whining...More likely, though, Americans are just leaving the whining to pundits and trend reporters. Our problem is not whining. It is persuading young people that, with baby boomers retiring, entitlement programs bulging and the world economy growing ever more competitive, now's the time to roll up the sleeves for something other than tattoos. For example, India produces 2.5 million college graduates every year (with concentrations in high demand fields - electronics, programming, engineering, accounting, etc.), and approximately 90,000 MBA's. Nothing against tattoos, but I do feel ignorance and apathy are much too prominent in America. Awareness of ignorance is the first step to wisdom.

POPSPatch Adams hospital - Gesundheit - still not built but such an answer for community based services There will be 30,000 square feet devoted to the arts in a fully arts-centered hospital. There will be a school for social change and in-depth agricultural programs. Staff persons who've served for four years and want a little distance from the intensity of the hospital can create their fantasy living space in our village. I want to tell all readers that the journey has been heavenly all along the way. Simply being in an idealist quest is its own reward. I've never felt I've sacrificed anything or thought it was a hard journey. Hard would have been having to work in corporate medicine and lie to patients and myself every day. My concern for humanity's future drives me to want to put whatever efforts I can to changing everything that hurts people and nature. The Gesundheit! Institute is that for me, and so many others.

POPSGamers Make Better Surgeons Yet another study, by Fordham University, measured the effect of learning a new video game on problem-solving skills in middle school aged children. It found that "playing video games can improve cognitive and perceptual skills." "Certain types of video games can have beneficial effects improving gamers' dexterity as well as their ability to problem solve - attributes that have proven useful not only to students but to surgeons," the researchers found. There are actually "games" where you perform virtual operations, BTW.

POPSThe joy of taking some time out Embrace the faff. Stare out of the window. Bend paperclips. Stand in the middle of the room trying to remember what you came downstairs for. Pace. Drum your fingertips. Move papers around. Hum. Look at the garden.Go to the shed with the intention of tidying up and instead fall asleep. Make mental notes. Read every single word of the newspaper - even the job ads - before getting down to work. Lose yourself in erotic reveries. Pat your pockets. Resolve to be more organised in future. Be useless.

POPSWomen who play casual games feature These clips are from page 2. Interesting things on page 1 are that Kohlman plays games for pain management, and that her regular hours of play are in the morning, eg. from 7am - 9am where people have a few hours to themselves. The lesson that putting the player in a situation where they don't know what to do bores, confuses and turns people off is consistent. The focus on stress shows that reaching a wider audience that she represents may involve evaluating "stress" in your gameplay design. If storylines and repeat play are boring, and competitiveness is stressful, what are the incentives to play? Gameplay is mentioned as the #1 reason to play, do I infer that's the Theory of Fun style buzz of skills improvement and mastery? This article doesn't explicitly say. Perhaps the "ridiculousness" could also mean visual humour and cute animations and expressions that aren't overly burdened with Story are a type of reward?

POPSDare to Be Yourself - from Psychology Today I was reading my friend feed stream and someone posted a link to this article. I had some insane realizations this weekend and this is definitely among the list. Though, this is one I think we deal with on and off again through our lives - being authentic and having a core self. Definitely fascinating and interesting.

POPSThe business of Flash games This is as much a test for clip-to-blog as anything. :) Recently I was impressed with a Flash game called toppling Totem, or something. I've not been following the rise of Flash games too closely, but I was surprised to look at the list of devs on this site and see people able to make Flash games on the side and publish them on a polished independent site. Guess they've bloomed while I was looking the other way. ;) Like everything else tho' the economic wheels keep turning and it sounds like a saturated market in which it's difficult to succeed. The potential not merely for revenue but as a platform to forge one's skills as a designer is attractive tho'. How do you get started?
