POPSChalmers Johnson on the "Pentagon Bailout" "There has been much moaning, air-sucking, and outrage about the $700 billion that the U.S. government is thinking of throwing away on rich New York bankers who have been ripping us off for the past few years and then letting greed drive their businesses into a variety of ditches. In fact, we dole out similar amounts of money every year in the form of payoffs to the armed services, the military-industrial complex, and powerful senators and representatives allied with the Pentagon. POPSWhen is a holocaust not a holocaust? (cont.)Thus, the number of people available for being killers or victims is markedly reduced. Moreover, extensive ethnic cleansing has taken place in the country (another good indication of progress, n'est-ce pas?). Sunnis and Shiites are now living more in their own special enclaves than before, none of those stinking mixed communities with their unholy mixed marriages, so violence of the sectarian type has also gone down; and the powerful movement of Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr has had a cease-fire in effect for many months, unconnected to the surge. On top of all this, US soldiers, in the face of numerous "improvised explosive devices" on the roads, have been venturing out a lot less (for fear of things like ... well, dying), so the violence against our noble lads is also down. Remember that insurgent attacks on American forces is how the Iraqi violence all began in the first place.

POPSAccuracy of radiometric dating an earlier clip got me looking for resources on the internet to explain simply, yet completely, the underpinnings of radiometric dating. www.pbs.org/evolution provides a good starting point for many such references. there is a religious tract on the internet that makes many claims about the inaccuracy of radiometric dating methods and the infallibility of the bible as a historical record. the link in this clip addresses some of its primary claims.

POPSJudge Considering Arguments To Block Troopergate probe Wouldn’t legislators who call for an investigation naturally believe something was amiss? Clarkson had hoped to call witnesses. The judge said no. Next to Clarkson sat Scott Hoyt – a Dallas lawyer with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher here on behalf of the Liberty Legal Institute. One point of debate: Did the Senate Judiciary Committee have the proper authority to issue the subpoenas? Maassen said it doesn’t matter whether the Legislature acts through a council or a committee – it still has the same broad powers of investigation. Thomas Van Flein, the lawyer representing Palin her husband Todd, watched from the gallery, along with Sen. Fred Dyson, Rep. John Coghill. Rep. Bob Lynn and Rep. Les Gara.

POPSYou Won't Believe Where That $700-Billion Bailout Figure Came From "We just wanted to choose a really large number." Carl Lavin over at Forbes.com, points out a fascinating paragraph buried in a story on his website late last week by Brian Wingfield and Josh Zumbrun. Brian Wingfield and Josh Zumbrun 09.23.08, 6:39 PM ET The more Congress examines the Bush administration's bailout plan, the hazier its outcome gets. At a Senate Banking Committee hearing Tuesday, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle complained of being rushed to pass legislation or else risk financial meltdown. In fact, some of the most basic details, including the $700 billion figure Treasury would use to buy up bad debt, are fuzzy. "It's not based on any particular data point," a Treasury spokeswoman told Forbes.com Tuesday. "We just wanted to choose a really large number." http://www.forbes.com/businessinthebeltway/2008/09/23/bailout-paulson-congress-biz-beltway-cx_jz_bw_0923bailout.html
