POPSEvicted for Reporting Domestic Abuse To add insult to injury, this past July Cleaves-Milan received a call from a collection agency seeking nearly $3,800 they claimed she owed for the early termination of her lease. She returned home a day after telling police her boyfriend threatened to kill her to find a 10-day eviction notice taped to her door. She didn't terminate her lease early – she was given no choice in the matter. Luckily Aimco dropped this fee, but only after the Chicago Tribune inquired. This story is horrific and unfortunately not uncommon. While the Violence Against Women Act of 2005 protects domestic abuse victims who live in public or subsidized housing from eviction, the law concerning private landlords is unclear. This lack of protection for women who rent in the private market creates a disincentive for women to report abuse, trapping women, and often their children, in violent relationships with no legal recourse.

POPSChris Matthews to Oath Keepers Founder, "Which scenario do you live in?" and the violation of rights that has happened in other countries in recent history.” Under the thin veil of questioning, Matthews used an array of crayons to color Rhodes as paranoid and delusional. The Left will never understand the military life, or their sense of duty and loyalty to America. To them, police will always be “pigs” and see our military as “baby-killers” and Mao as a great political leader. And yet, as long as we have honorable men and women willing to protect our Constitution and keep their oaths– The Wall will stay in ruins and our experiment in liberty will continue. Which scenario do you live in? Guardians of the Republic Honor Your Oath http://oath-keepers.blogspot.com/2009/03/oath-keepers-declaration-of-orders-we.html

POPSEnding death penalty could save US millions More: Dieter says that keeping execution while reducing its costs is not realistic. If less money is spent on appeals, he argues, the risk of executing an innocent person will increase. He said that ultimately, execution does not deter crime as its supporters hope. Capital punishment has been abolished in most western democracies, and after it was eliminated in the US state of New Jersey in 2007, the state saw its murder rate decline. Dieter cites a poll of 500 local police chiefs, which was paid for by the DPIC and released on Tuesday, showing support for ending capital punishment. The survey found that the police chiefs see the death penalty as the least effective tool in deterring crime. They suggest more efficient use of resources -- such as boosting funding for drug and alcohol abuse programs.

POPSSupport Your Global Police Force The UN wants to build a global police force. And, if that itself were not bad enough, Ronald K. Noble, a man whose actions have been defined by the UN as attempted genocide, is laying the foundation for. Thanks to the near-ubiquity of inconspicuous digital cameras and the technological blessing of internet file-sharing sites, Americans are just now coming to realize how commonplace criminal abuse by the police has become -- and how difficult it is to hold an abusive police officer accountable for crimes against innocent people. But this is the square root of the problem we would confront in the event that the UN actually created a global police force.

POPSA Teachable Moment: Police Authority and Racism I know from experience that taking on the persona of a law-enforcement officer results in a surge of internalized boldness; it’s just part of the job. At times this is a necessity because police officers often find themselves in situations where a high degree of assertiveness is all that stands between them and losing control of a situation. I also know from personal experience that if police officers are not constantly reminded of the dangers of crossing the line through their use of their authority, then abuse of their power is a virtual certainty. Further, as with any minority (and police are a minority), associates tend to stick together. That police will back up one another, even when their fellow officers are wrong, is as dependable as sunrise.

POPSUK has 1% of world's population but 20% of its CCTV cameras
An old article but still pretty accurate. you cannot move in London without being seen by at least 3 cameras at any one point. It is the definition of a police state, the police also have sub-machine guns, (H&K MP5k's for anyone interested) while you can be arrested for carrying a penknife if its blade is more than an inch long, because of the laws now concerning blades and knives. as well as the other tricks like LRADs (not new) which are now common place around the world. All backed by by ignorant and dangerous attitudes of the police. Again as always don't take my word for it look it up. The report says: "It is not entirely absurd to imagine that supermarkets' loyalty card data might one day be used by the Government to identify people who ignored advice to eat healthily or who drank too much, so that they could be given a lower priority for NHS treatment". "We have supermarkets collecting data on our shopping habits and also offering life insurance services"

POPSAbuse led UK woman to kill disabled daughter, self More: Pilkington's son Anthony, now 19, also was abused over the years. He was once taken to a shed at knifepoint and locked in by the gang — some of whose members were as young as 10. Later, he was attacked with an iron bar. The inquest in Loughborough, in central England, heard that 33 calls to police did not result in any prosecutions for bullying or harassment. In one case police reported back that Pilkington had been "overreacting" — in another case she was simply told to draw her curtains. The inquest — which under British law must be held when someone dies unexpectedly, violently or of unknown causes — ruled that police's failure to respond to the family's pleas for help contributed to their deaths. POPSStem Cell Research: Medics Now Under Police Investigation did not deny or admit to the charges of abuse against him during the hour long interview in his private IVF clinic in the suburbs of Nairobi. “I have worked with a lot of women about 64 of them since 1986. One has to do what they have to do in order to make it and help find a cure for many diseases affecting our society and the world,” said Dr Gichuhi. The investigations boss said that as many as 100 women, their whereabouts could not be known to date. At least 36 women have gone missing in the last three weeks alone. POPS Draconian drug tests The new welfare reform bill gives unprecedented new powers to Jobcentre staff There are further concerns about rights and liberties. For the first time Jobcentres will be able to share information with the police, the probation service and "others" to check the "accuracy" of information provided by the claimant. This could include information about drug-testing on arrest, court orders and sentencing and substance-related treatment received in prison or the community. While the bill protects against evidence acquired by Jobcentres being used in criminal proceedings against the claimant, the information sharing is two-way with no obvious barrier preventing the police using the information to prompt or inform a line of inquiry or criminal investigation.

POPSJudge Dismisses Animal Cruelty Charges Against Police Officer For Sex With Cows
"This is a legal question for me. It's not a questions of morals. It's not a question of hygiene. It's not a question of how people should conduct themselves." The dismissal reportedly irked the prosecution. "I think any reasonable juror could infer that a man's penis in the mouth of a calf is torment," a Burlington County assistant prosecutor, Kevin Morgan, said. "It's a crime against nature." The prosecution also claims a video in which a calf allegedly head-butts Malia was never seen by the grand jury, the Philadelphia Daily News reports. But this is not the end to Melia's legal woes. He, along with girlfriend Heather Lewis, were arrested in April 2008 for sexually assaulting three girls over a five-year-period. Authorities investigating those charges uncovered videos on his computer of a girl being "subjected to sexual activity" in addition to taped encounters between Melia and the calves, the Philadelphia Daily News reports. POPSStop Begging Obama and Get Mad
The right wing is not wrong. It is not the problem. We are the problem. If we do not tap into the justifiable anger sweeping across the nation, if we do not militantly push back against corporate fraud and imperial wars that we cannot win or afford, the political vacuum we have created will be filled with right-wing lunatics and proto-fascists. The goons will inherit power not because they are astute, but because we are weak and inept. Violence is a dark undercurrent of American history. It is exacerbated by war and economic decline. Violence is spreading outward from the killing fields in Iraq and Afghanistan to slowly tear apart individuals, families and communities. There is no immunity. The longer the wars continue, the longer the members of our working class are transformed by corporate overlords into serfs, the more violence will dominate the landscape. The slide into chaos and a police state will become inevitable. The soldiers and Marines who return from Iraq and Afghanis

POPSSavage Attack Leaves Man With Half A Head He was left in a coma for two weeks and his brain swelled so much surgeons removed the front half of his skull just hours after he was admitted. He now suffers frequent seizures, has difficulty talking, and lost much of his memory. Mr Gator now lives with his mother, who is his main carer as he can no longer work. Mrs Gator said: "He's just a different boy. His sparkle is totally gone. He used to be so independent but he can't work any more and he can't drive. He's got half a head and he's completely lost his confidence. "There's absolutely nothing protecting his brain now - it's just under his skin. We're waiting for surgery for a new skull plate to be put in." A Havering police spokesman said they had no plans to look for any other attackers in connection with the case, adding: "We gave the CPS all the evidence available and after reviewing the case they decided not to proceed with it. We adhere to their decision."

POPSFree Speech to be Curtailed at Winter Olympics 2010 in Vancouver "The bylaw relaxes rules for Games-related events, limits free expression and speech in public and private spaces, and grants sweeping discretionary powers to Mayor Gregor Robertson and City Manager Penny Ballem to do whatever is "warranted," "necessary or desirable" to ensure the Olympics' "safety and security" and "protection of commercial rights."" This very open to abuse and should be examined cautiously by anyone planning to attend.

POPSTax-Feeders and Manufactured “Crimes” " Police in Austin, Texas recently sprang a trap of that kind on Mark Douglas Ledford and his girlfriend, Asia Ward. Austin’s “Finest” parked a green Honda Accord near Ledford’s home. Curious, Ledford consulted with his neighbors in the hope of identifying an owner; then he reported the vehicle to the police. A pair of officers paid a brief visit to the neighborhood and spoke briefly with Ledford. “I told them, `Isn’t it strange that someone parked their car there with the windows down and the keys in it?’” he recalled. The police replied that there was no problem, since the car was parked legally, and then left."
