POPSThe War Over Veterans’ Benefits The Arizona senator’s own war service doesn’t exempt him from criticism on this one. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama called him “one of the few senators of either party who oppose this bill because he thinks it’s too generous” — a characterization that just barely stands up to fact-checking.* *http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/482/ (barely true) Fodder for Congressional Races Keep an eye on the re-election efforts of Republicans Steve Chabot in Ohio, Tom Feeney in Florida and Randy Kuhl in New York. They’re targets in two different holiday-week advertising attacks – radio commercials paid for by the campaign arm of House Democrats and television ads brought to you by the liberal group Americans United for Change. In the TV spot World War II-era images give way to modern ones. “Supporting our troops isn’t about politics – it’s about patriotism,” the announcer says. “Tell Steve Chabot to put the needs of our veterans first.”

POPSYahoo! Election 08 This site might succeed because it's a Yahoo! site. Thought I'm always skeptical when Y! announces a new product, This site presents a ton of campaign information efficiently. Yahoo! Election 08 is uses social media tools to target a non-social media, mainstream audience. My interest, primary, is how they will exercise editorial control, and if they can build a significant audience and voice.

POPS PolitiFact::Clinton NIH Funding Claim::False NIH funding is up under Bush At a Democratic debate in Philadelphia, Sen. Hillary Clinton was asked what she would do as president to fight cancer. As part of her answer, she said, "It's just outrageous that under President Bush, the National Institutes of Health have been basically decreased in funding. We are on the brink of so many medical breakthroughs, and I will once again fund that research." Her claim about the funding of NIH is not accurate, no matter how you slice the numbers. Regardless of which years you choose to compare, or whether the numbers are adjusted for inflation, funding went up.
