Why Putin Should Scare Us - Ralph Peters
willhelm
by willhelm  9-22-2008    8
Good article. "Meanwhile, our next president will have to cope with this brilliant, dangerous man. That's going to require the experience and skills to exploit every element of our national power; to convince Europe that appeasement will only enlarge Putin's appetite; and to draw clear lines while avoiding drawn guns. Above all, our president will have to take Putin's measure accurately and not indulge in wishful thinking. Managing Putin's Russia could emerge as our No. 1 security challenge."

A Conservative For Obama
dmegivern
by dmegivern  9-22-2008    5
I saw this clipped earlier, but I didn't realize the gravity of the endorsement. Wow, a publisher of the National Review saying, "But I now see that Obama is almost the ideal candidate for this moment in American history. I disagree with him on many issues. But those don’t matter as much as what Obama offers, which is a deeply conservative view of the world. Nobody can read Obama’s books (which, it is worth noting, he wrote himself) or listen to him speak without realizing that this is a thoughtful, pragmatic, and prudent man. "

B.I.T.C.H. Condemns Sarah Palin
cptenaud
by cptenaud  9-17-2008    1
continued from article............... Fortunately, I have the gift of discerning coy sins less careful Christians — and my inattentive Savior — routinely overlook. And as founder of Bringing Integrity To Christian Homemakers, one sin pings my values radar louder than an incoming sortie of foul smelling demons: Narcissistic parents who irresponsibly spit out babies they have neither the interest nor time to care about. That’s the problem with people who regard birth as simply the end of a pregnancy, rather than the beginning of a life. Birth marks the start of work, not a self-congratulatory furlough. Absent through either a preoccupation with stoking a ravenous blast furnace of an ego (Mrs. Palin) or simply because they’d rather be fishing (Mr. Palin), the Palins selfishly make a shambles of their children’s lives. Drugs, sex, alcohol, vendetta’s and arrests! Honestly, it all sounds a bit like Gossip Girl, only in a pioneer setting with a wardrobe by Sears.

WSJ: Palin Not Too Conservative, Pragmatic
blueridge
by blueridge  9-7-2008    1
Which is why McCain chose her--for image only. Sarah Palin is McCain's 'Dan Quayle' (an election ploy that worked for GHWB), who would not interfere with his neoconservative agenda, including on social issues. In regards to oil drilling in Alaska: Sen. McCain opposes ANWR drilling. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal in June, Gov. Palin said that when she met with Sen. McCain at a governor's conference in Washington, they discussed energy but parted company on the issue of drilling in ANWR, which he has opposed. And in regard to her position on a social issue: she supports abstinence-until-marriage programs, where teens are taught to refrain from sex until marriage and contraception is discussed only to explain its failings. ....."Christian conservatives" should see she did not do a very good job in her own family on that issue (i.e. Bristol's pregnancy and open under-age drinking), instead of giving her blind praise.

Deconstructing Harwood on Biden
bmeuppls
by bmeuppls  8-24-2008
But what troubles me about Harwood’s comments is that they are, I’m willing to bet, not the expression of some broad belief in freedom of speech, but rather are a pragmatic rhetorical attempt to rescue Biden from the very kinds of criticisms Harwood would be loath to defend were the target someone like Trent Lott. – All of which points back to the animating tenet in “liberal” ideology — namely, that, simply by virtue of adopting the left-liberal agenda, one is good, and so his “mistakes” are but minor slip-ups, hiccups in a life of sublime goodliness. Whereas any kind of minor slip-up by those on the “right” (classical liberals included, these days) are to be seen as brief inadvertent flashes revealing their grubby souls — even when those flashes are either admittedly unintended, or else have to be run through a special code book to prove visible to the watchdogs of all that is good and righteous.

Transformers - The Nature of Alien Life
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  8-23-2008
The driving factor is a pragmatic desire to improve mental capacity. Alien beings may have already reached a point in their evolution where, having exhausted the potential of their biological brains, they have taken the next logical step and opted for robotic brains equipped with artificial intelligence. This brain swap may not be as far off for humans as one might think. In only a few decades, the computer revolution here on Earth has produced supercomputers capable of performing more than a quadrillion calculations per second. According to research by Hans Moravec, an artificial-intelligence expert at Carnegie Mellon University, that rate trumps the human brain’s estimated top speed of 100 trillion calculations per second. Some scientists speculate that in a few decades, an event called the technological singularity will occur, and machines armed with computer brains will become sentient and surpass human intelligence. Civilizations equipped with technology light-years ahead

Augustine and the relationship of the two cities in law

Ben Franklin Took The Parisian Salons By Storm
merrie
by merrie  7-3-2008    3
Franklin's miracle was that, armed only with his canny personal charm and assisted by his international reputation as a scientist and philosopher, he was able to cajole a wary French government into lending the fledgling American nation an enormous fortune. Not only did Franklin help seal the French alliance with a formal treaty in 1778 and keep it alive throughout the war; he was instrumental, as well, in negotiating the peace with Britain. By the time Franklin sailed back to Philadelphia in 1785, he had proved himself "the most indispensable leader of the American Revolution next to George Washington," says Dull. The enduring image of Franklin in Paris tends to be that of a flirtatious old man, too busy visiting the city's fashionable salons to pursue affairs of state as rigorously as John Adams. The French consistently asked the Continental Congress to retain Franklin as America's chief spokesman.

Circumcision - cutting the competition
dakotayii
by dakotayii  6-24-2008    10
Some forms of genital mutilation have obvious effects on fertility. For instance, several African and Micronesian societies practice testicular ablation—the crushing or cutting off of one testicle. Some Australian aborigines engage in subincision, which exposes part of the urethra and thus causes sperm to leak out of the base of the penis. Circumcision does not have quite such clear-cut effects. But there are several ways it may affect fertility: most obviously, the lack of a foreskin could make insertion, ejaculation or both take longer. Perhaps long enough that an illicit quickie will not always reach fruition. Older men are in a position to form alliances with younger men—passing on knowledge, lending them political support and giving them access to weapons. By insisting that the young undergo genital mutilation of some form as a quid pro quo, an older married man can seek to ensure that even if he is cuckolded, he will still be the father of his wives’ children.

Leaked Saudi View. 'Border dispute' Existing UN Resolutions Solution
righthand
by righthand  5-11-2008    1
Prince Saud al-Faisal has been the discreet voice of Saudi Arabian diplomacy for more than 30 years, and he spoke with unchallenged authority at the recent meeting of the Quartet of Middle East peacemakers, giving what turned out to be a bleak assessment of the current negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. The situation was "dire", he told the assembled dignitaries, including Condoleezza Rice, Tony Blair and Ban Ki-moon. "Many dangers loom. It seems we have reached a stage that I can only describe as a morass." Such pessimism is not big news, though Saud's gloomy remarks were made, characteristically, behind closed doors at London's Lancaster House. It is certainly hard to find anyone who harbours much hope that there is a way out of the current impasse. ... Guardian
