Pakiston ruling coalition splits after six months
tommy2balmy
by tommy2balmy  8-25-2008
Zardari is the Peoples Party's candidate to replace Musharraf as president. Now that he appears to be the front-runner, the Peoples Party is in no hurry to take away the president's power to dissolve Parliament – another sticking point with Sharif. "Zardari becoming the president would be the most unfortunate event in Pakistan's history," said engineer Raheel Rehman, 27. "A thug is going to be the president of this country," said palm reader Tawakkul Hussain, 35. "We have no options ahead of us. Once again, they are taking turns in power. This is Zardari's turn. After that, it will be Nawaz's turn. He is equally irresponsible and corrupt." The provincial and national assemblies will vote for the president Sept. 6.

Pakistani President Musharraf Resigns Amid Impeachment Threats
merrie
by merrie  8-18-2008    2
Many Pakistanis blame the rising militant violence in their country on Musharraf's alliance with the U.S. His reputation suffered blows in 2007 when he ousted dozens of judges and imposed emergency rule. His rivals won February parliamentary elections and have since sought his ouster, announcing impeachment plans earlier this month. Musharraf, who has been largely sidelined since his rivals came to power, had resisted the mounting calls to quit, even after the coalition finalized impeachment charges against him and threatened to send a motion to Parliament later this week. Who will ultimately succeed Musharraf is an open question. There has been speculation that both Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari, the leaders of the two main parties are interested in the role.

You may ask yourself how can these small countries do it ? Yet Bush still sits ! One reason, "THE PEOPLE" and looking at everyday news of the people (LinkTV/Mosaic) I notice that people from other countries are more involved in politics & what their Gov. does as oppose to the US where it's your favorite news station that cast the vote .

Musharraf, Loyalists Decide To Fight It Out
merrie
by merrie  8-7-2008
Later, the governors of Punjab and Sindh met the president to discuss the political situation. Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad is said to have renewed support for President Musharraf on behalf of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement. The president had decided in the morning not to visit China as a state guest for the Olympics opening ceremonies but he was persuaded by his allies to review the decision. It was decided that he would leave for Beijing on Thursday morning, accompanied by Punjab Governor Salman Taseer. The sources said that the PML-Q leaders had asked the president to defend himself in person in parliament. They also convinced him not to call off his visit to China which was a tested strategic friend of Pakistan. Chaudhry Pervaiz said: “Gen (retd) Musharraf is an elected president who has the credit of holding free and fair elections. He does not deserve this treatment and we will stand by him in case of any effort to oust him.”

Failed States Index 2008 The Best And Worst
merrie
by merrie  6-29-2008
Bangladesh took this year’s hardest fall, set off in part by postponed elections, a feuding, deadlocked government, and the imposition of emergency rule that has dragged on for more than 18 months. These political setbacks were followed by greater economic hardships after a devastating cyclone in November flooded large swaths of cropland and left 1.5 million people homeless. In nearby Pakistan, also one of this year’s worst performers, a beleaguered President Pervez Musharraf sparked waves of violent protests when he dismissed the head of the Supreme Court and declared martial law. In a tragic close to the year, the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto left many wondering about the future prospects of this fragile, nuclear-armed state. Ironically, Pakistanis constitute the largest national U.N. contingent operating in Liberia. More than 9,000 Bangladeshi troops wear U.N. blue helmets around the world, a third of them in the Ivory Coast.

The Big Promise of Elections '08 = More War! More Debt!
sahara
by sahara  6-14-2008
Both McCain and Obama have made it clear, (as Obama has stated) "War with Iran is not off the table." But if we listen, both have also spoken about going into Pakistan, about "protecting Israel" no matter the cost, and even if it involves military action. So what the elections have come down to, on both the left and the right, is that there is no anti-war candidate left, nor is there one who seems to have any ideas that will rescue the economy and recover the increasing deficit.

Have you heard, Bin Laden is Dead.

Someone, from thethinkingblue channel messaged that Osama has been dead since 2007: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWcw2OEyhXI Youtube member message: "Osama Bin Laden was murdered in December/2007 by Omar Sheikh. and of course Bush should be elated about that but why should he care, his lies covered his ass..." I asked myself: What? Bin Laden Dead? This is news to me... The usual He's Dead, He's Alive, chatter is all over the Internet. There is even an account that he has been dead since 2001. http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/osama_dead.html But you hear not a peep on TV. I think if he were truly pushing up daisies or whatever dead people do in other countries; there would be more commotion about it, maybe NOT. The symbolic nature of his being alive would be of benefit for the so-called war-on-terror pundits and also for the Al Qaeda type terrorist groups... And they say you can't beat a dead horse! ... :-?

Pakistan, Islamic Militants Agree To Peace Deal
merrie
by merrie  5-21-2008
The North West Frontier Province's government is led by a Pashtun nationalist party which is a junior partner in the federal coalition and a key player in the peace effort. The ruling parties blame the more forceful tactics of President Pervez Musharraf, a stalwart U.S. ally, for stoking Islamic extremism and the spread of militant religious movements to previous peaceful area, such as Swat. But Western officials have expressed concern that any deals will be poorly enforced and simply allow Taliban and Al Qaeda militants to execute more attacks in Afghanistan and plot terror strikes in the West.

Pakistan President Won’t Step Down
merrie

Final results from this week’s parliamentary poll were expected later Wednesday, but with the count nearly complete, two opposition parties have won enough seats to form a new government, though they will likely fall short of the two-thirds needed to impeach the president… Musharraf’s spokesman Rashid Qureshi said Tuesday the president intends to work with the new government and will serve out his term that expires in 2012 — rejecting opposition calls for him to resign.
