The VP Debate
debbyski
by debbyski  10-3-2008    9
"When it came to domestic issues, Ms. Palin mainly relied on enthusiasm and humor, talking about hockey moms, soccer moms and Joe Sixpack almost as often as she used the word “maverick” to describe Mr. McCain or herself. But she offered virtually no detail — beyond the Republican mantra of tax cuts — for how she and Mr. McCain would address the financial crisis or help Americans avoid foreclosure or what programs they would cut because of the country’s disastrous fiscal problems. Ms. Palin’s primary tactic was simply to repeat the same thing over and over: John McCain is a maverick. So is she. To stay on that course, she had to indulge in some wildly circular logic: America does not want another Washington insider. They want Mr. McCain (who has been in Congress for nearly 26 years). Ms. Palin condemned Wall Street greed and said she and Mr. McCain would “demand” strict oversight. In virtually the next breath, she said government should “get out of the way” of American business."

An Election Without Meaning
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  10-3-2008    8
Props, gossip, accusations, and public relations. It is impression management from a candidates’ perspective. How can we fool the most people into believing that we stand for something? It is billions of dollars of gravy for the media folks and continued profit maximization for the war machine, Wall Street, and insurance companies, no matter who is determined the winner in November.

"Let's start telling the truth," Biden said during a presidential primary debate sponsored by YouTube last year. "Number one, you take all the troops out - you better have helicopters ready to take those 3,000 civilians inside the Green Zone, where I have been seven times and shot at. You better make sure you have protection for them, or let them die." But when questioned about the episode afterward by the Hill newspaper, Biden backpedaled from his claim of being "shot at" and instead allowed: "I was near where a shot landed."

Substantive Presidential Debates Are Hard to Find
dmegivern
by dmegivern  9-29-2008
Overall, 32% of the questions asked in debates were non-substantive; Only 9% of the questions concerned the economy. The debates hosted by PBS and Univision were the most substantive, with 100% and 82% substantive questions respectively. Fox and ABC hosted the least substantive debates; fewer than half the questions were substantive. The front-running candidates in both parties were more likely to be asked questions focused on trivia, while the candidates trailing badly in the polls were more likely to be asked substantive questions. For example, 73 percent of the questions posed to Dennis Kucinich were substantive, while only 51 percent of the questions given to Barack Obama were substantive, and only 59 percent of the questions for John McCain were substantive. Of those who moderated more than one debate, Salinas and Ramos of Univision asked the most substantive questions (88% and 73%, respectively). Chris Wallace of Fox (33%) asked the fewest substantive questions.

GOP "Hitched Their Wagon To Rising Star" Gov. Sarah Palin
merrie
by merrie  9-12-2008
Rarely, if ever, has a vice-presidential pick had such impact. And no media pundit should be able to get away with claiming it has more to do with style than substance. A Rasmussen poll shows a recent increase in those identifying themselves as Republican. 32% of those calling themselves Republicans rose to 33.2% in August, while Democratic identification slipped to 35% from 37%. With a sizable majority of Americans demanding more domestic oil production, McCain chose a running mate from the state with the most to drill. Palin could give Obama, Biden and McCain a seminar on accessing oil and gas without devastating the wild. McCain's running mate has also electrified the party's base by living up to the family values she espouses, suspending the state fuel tax and vetoing half a billion dollars in spending — the kinds of things Republicans used to do before they lost their way.

McCain's Fannie and Freddie Connections
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  9-10-2008    4
In McCain's op-ed in the Journal, he and Palin wrote: For years, Congress failed to act and it is deeply troubling that what we are seeing is an exercise in crisis management rather than sound planning, and at great cost to taxpayers. We promise the American people that our administration will be different. We have long records of standing up to special interests… But McCain's own campaign staffers are those special interests, a fact that casts doubt on both McCain's hiring judgment and his ability to pursue tough reforms of Fannie and Freddie.

Ron Paul Will be on Presidential Ballot
sahara
by sahara  9-9-2008
Paul's name on the ballot could siphon votes from Republican presidential candidate John McCain. In Montana’s June 3 primary, Paul took 20,606 votes, well short of McCain’s 72,791, but still a sizeable chunk of Republican voters. An additional 2,333 Montanans voted for neither, choosing Republican “no preference.” Martin said he would not be concerned if putting Paul on the ballot harmed McCain's candidacy. "If it would affect that, it wouldn't bother us too much," Martin added. "We wanted to put the best candidate that was out there on the ballot."

Racial and ethnic slurs may be “just Alaska” and, clearly, they are common, everyday chatter for Palin. Besides insulting Obama with a Step-N’-Fetch-It, “darkie musical” swipe, people who know her say she refers regularly to Alaska’s Aboriginal people as “Arctic Arabs” – how efficient, lumping two apparently undesirable groups into one ugly description – as well as the more colourful “mukluks” along with the totally unimaginative “fucking Eskimos,” according to a number of Alaskans and Wasillians interviewed for this article. But being openly racist is only the tip of the Palin iceberg. According to Alaskans interviewed for this article, she is also vindictive and mean. We’re talking Rove mean and Nixon vindictive...

Obama's Misleading, Confusing Abortion Rights Ads
merrie
by merrie  9-3-2008    1
Obama’s new radio ad tells voters McCain “will make abortion illegal” is airing widely in at least seven swing states. Kate Michelman, an informal Obama adviser who is the former president of the abortion-rights group NARAL Pro-Choice America, said she expected the campaign to expand its appeal to women on issues of abortion rights. “This is a door opened to a longer campaign and strategic effort to ensure that women know the truth about John McCain and Gov. Palin,” she said, suggesting it would come “on the radio, in the mail, on the phones, and in the organizing on the ground.” Though the campaign says the ad was released before Palin was chosen, Michelman said her selection, and her strong anti-abortion stance, would drive the issue closer to the center of the race. “By his nomination of Gov. Palin, McCain has made his opposition to a woman’s right to decide a major campaign issue,” she said.

McCain's Gamble On a Woman Create Headache For Obama
merrie
by merrie  8-30-2008
As governor of Alaska she is about as far removed from Washington as it is possible to be. The McCain campaign intends to contrast that with the inside-Washington double-ticket of Obama and Biden. Perhaps most impressively, in just a year and a half in office in Alaska she has established a reputation as a tough reformer. She is also a staunch advocate of expanding domestic drilling for oil, popular among oil-rich Alaska and among Americans as a whole. At her first appearance on the stump yesterday alongside her running-mate, she seemed assured and steady. But her selection adds a startling new uncertainty into the presidential race, a risky gamble for the Republicans but a complicating headache for the Democrats. THROUGHOUT their long primary campaign this year, Democrats made much of the fact that their progressive party was presenting a historic choice to the nation; the first black man or woman in the Oval Office.

McCain's Hero Status is Phony
papananook
by papananook  8-6-2008    12
McCain's war hero image is fair game and needs to be challenged as well, especially since the Senator beats his chest as the self-appointed arbiter of national military honor and homeland security. The history has been well documented that John McCain received special treatment when he was prisoner of war in Hanoi, in exchange for making over 30 propaganda commercials for the North Vietnamese. In fact, fellow POW's have testified that McCain was considered the best candidate for these films by the North Vietnamese, because he was willing to do anything to avoid torture. They note that the communists even called him "THE SONGBIRD". Ted Sampley, founder of 'Swiftboat Veterans for Truth' and now one of the founders of 'Vietnam Veterans Against John McCain', has stated on their website that even after McCain came home from his captivity he went so far as to deny that MIA's might even still be in Vietnam alive. McCain had the audacity to criticize and ignore the very same people who

California Republicans Cool to Youth-Voting Bills

This is a wonderful idea as it educates towards understanding that the vote is a right and important. If the Republicans are against it then they know their policies need changing to attract voters. ( This article indicates to me that the GOP people are not willing to make a forward step, let alone cater for younger voters.)
