POPSPoor People Are Fat and A Nation of Whiners Progressive thinking from dinosaurs? Gramm's views have not changed since the 1970's. Where are the stats? What are the solutions? Last time I looked, name calling never actually solved anything. Labling groups of impoverished people and witty adjectives for their plight might make a magazine cover, but in reality it does not make a bad situation any better. The "Al Gore Syndrome" at work agian. Talk, Talk, Talk...soluntions implemented = NONE. Perhaps he'll win the Nobel Peace Prize for his insults and remarkable discovery that "Poor People Are Fat". Pehaps if they stopped whining about us being a "Nation of Whiners" and actually started "doing" the right thing for the "Poor, Fat People" - we could get along towards a solution for the US, and Worldwide, crisis. There has been a reluctance among blacks to openly criticize Senator Obama, but behind the scenes, there is discontent among African-Americans, as well, over Mr. Obama’s move away from progressive issues. There’s even concern that he’s doing the Obama two-step on the issue that has been the cornerstone of his campaign: his opposition to the war in Iraq. But the senator denied that any significant change should be inferred from his comment that he would “continue to refine” his policy on the war. He seems to believe that his shifts and twists and clever panders — as opposed to bold, principled leadership on important matters — will entice large numbers of independent and conservative voters to climb off the fence and run into his yard. Time flies and the Iowa caucuses seem a very long time ago.

That $40 billion tax hike alone is twice as much as all the federal taxes paid by the 39 million Americans in the bottom quintile. We're sure that Obama's camp would address our concerns by pointing out that raising the tax bill for the top 1% eases the tax burden on the rest of America. But that's a superficial rationalization designed to appeal to class envy. First, increasing the burden on the top taxpayers will not make the poor rich, but instead make the rich poorer. There will be 131 billion fewer dollars in the private sector for investments that create businesses and jobs. Second, squeezing the federal tax burden onto an ever smaller group is not smart. The Marxist appetite for radically progressive taxation is both unfair and dangerous. Third, the large majority that pays little or no taxes will make excessive demands on the small group that is saddled with the burden because the non- and low-paying group is insulated from the pain.
