POPSThe Eightfold Path of Buddha The Eightfold Path mistakenly assumes that no value can be maximal -- that any value can be desired too much. This is not true for values like extropy, intelligence, and justice.

POPSDemocracy? cacophony? Internet poses new questions "If it all sounds like the cacophony of the Internet, or a busy commercial street on rush hour, is creeping into offline media outlets, saysme.tv’s chief executive, Lisa Eisenpresser, pleads guilty, only she prefers other words: democracy, marketplace of ideas." "Of course, there is still the freedom to cover your ears." With all that advancement, what i am missing is a serious question that one should ask himself, what is the worth of what i have to say?

POPSA McCain Top Foreign Policy Advisor Took Money from Georgia While Russia's incursion into Georgia is deplorable, it should not be forgotten that Georgia's invasion of the independent South Ossetia is equally deplorable. This makes the USA's and McCain's willingness to wink at Georgia's actions inexplicable. It's less so now that we see that one of McCain's advisers had his palm greased by the Georgian government.

POPSNortheast States Praised for Allergy Policies The Asthma and Allergy Foundation has given top marks to Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Jersey for having policies that support kids with asthma and allergies in school. The group estimates that more than 5 million children in the U.S. have asthma and 2.2 million have a food allergy. States were graded based on their efforts to institute 18 policies, including those that protect students' access to their medications, promote the development of emergency protocols for dealing with asthma and anaphylaxis episodes and ban tobacco use in schools. Those states with the lowest rankings include South Dakota, Georgia, Wyoming and Oklahoma.

POPSDiscovery to stop plants branching They can be used to redirect the growth to the trunk for example, and from shoots or branches that will be trimmed. Strigolactones also play a role in a plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients, as they promote the beneficial symbiosis with mycorrhizal fungi, which improves nutrient uptake. There is the saying that carrots can improve your eyesight. Now it will be because there aren't so many branches in the way. I wonder how good it is with hedges. Could be used as a 'sculpting tool'

POPSPolitical Interference of the Surgeon General (No way!) Surely they are lying! There is no way they controlled free speech! I am astonished that they would even suggest such things! Like this: On the increasing politicization of the Surgeon General's position: -Previous Surgeon Generals agreed that: "never had they seen Washington, D.C. so partisan or a new Surgeon General so politically challenged and marginalized as during my tenure." -" he reality is that the nation's doctor has been marginalized and relegated to a position with no independent budget, and with supervisors who are political appointees with partisan agendas. Anything that doesn't fit into the political appointees' ideological, theological, or political agenda is ignored, marginalized, or simply buried." - "Politicians in the late 1960s decided that the Office of the Surgeon General should be disempowered and its authorities placed within offices of Department of Health and Human Services political appointees."

POPSThe Credit W Deserves In addition, trade with Africa has doubled during Bush's tenure. Yet you don't hear much about his African legacy. Bush came into office promising "compassionate conservatism." And he's largely lived up to that promise, but he gets little or no credit. Aid to Africa is only one aspect of that compassion. This week, an annual report to Congress notes a historic drop in America's number of chronically homeless people over a two-year period: a 30 percent decline between 2005 and 2007. The study showed that a new policy enacted to promote "housing first" for chronically homeless people - most of whom are either mentally ill or substance abusers - actually works. Instead of allowing these individuals to shuttle between the streets, shelters and hospitals in a vicious cycle, the new policy called for intervention to get them into permanent housing.

POPSPelosi Shrugs Off Continued GOP Protests... Not for one minute do I believe that the Republicans are against Pelosi's last clipped comment. The difference is the lifting of the offshore drilling legislation....which Boehner, correctly, knows would past. THAT's the entire reason for this disgusting failure to complete their responsibilities before they left for their vacations. It has nothing to do with any of the other options she mentioned. This woman *wants* the economy to slide so that she can falsely lay the blame on the President and the GOP.

POPSNewsweek: Education system is broken As a former NYC teaching fellow (similar program to Teach for America), I agree: 1. The educational system is broken. 2. The impact of an uneducated populace cannot be underestimated. However, I strongly disagree that teachers are the single most important factor in student achievement. As a teacher in a crisis school (and now a parent), I strongly believe that PARENTS are the single most important factor in student achievement. Quality teachers ARE correlated with student achievement, because the best teachers find the highest job satisfaction in working with families that embrace the responsibility of learning. Schools with responsible, engaged parents CAN and do attract and retain good teachers. The key to solving the educational crisis is to engage and equip parents LONG before their children reach school age, since the first 5 years are the most critical years of development. For one creative way to do just that, check out tumblon.com.

POPSObama Smears Too black/not black enough, "Muslim"/Christian, too rich?/too educated. Sad there aren't enough real scandals to offset those of McCain.
