POPSNortheast States Praised for Allergy Policies The Asthma and Allergy Foundation has given top marks to Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Jersey for having policies that support kids with asthma and allergies in school. The group estimates that more than 5 million children in the U.S. have asthma and 2.2 million have a food allergy. States were graded based on their efforts to institute 18 policies, including those that protect students' access to their medications, promote the development of emergency protocols for dealing with asthma and anaphylaxis episodes and ban tobacco use in schools. Those states with the lowest rankings include South Dakota, Georgia, Wyoming and Oklahoma.

POPSDawkin I, unlike the majority of ordinary people ,have read much of Professor Dawkins thought provoking thesis. With rare clarity, I can also understand why the religious masses shiver at his observations. What Dawkins has made me do is stop looking for answers in the mythical heavens, but within the hearts and aspirations of Man. The true question is surely what is GOOD and what is EVIL? Good is easy to define; the music of Mozart, the words of Shakespeare and Goethe, the actions of the Red Cross and its’ workers. Evil is that which brainwashes children into beliefs that have no substance, blind obedience to mystical books written by genius writers over two millennia ago, and not allowing children to grow with the human instinct of inquisition. I have no doubt that if we do not challenge the evil amongst us, humanity will fail

POPSBeverly Hills case blends free speech, public schools and cyber-bullying "In the Beverly Vista case, in which attorneys for both sides are in the stage of filing motions, the friends had been out of school for about two hours when they talked about another girl at school, directing some profanity at the girl but making no threats. The girl who recorded that conversation on her personal digital camera posted it on YouTube that evening. The video was viewed by about 20 people, including the girl who was talked about in the recording, according to the lawsuit. In an Instant Messenger chat, that girl told the one who posted the video to "keep it up for now," court papers allege. The next day, the girl and her mother went to the school's administrative office. School officials summoned the student responsible for posting the video and demanded that she delete the video on the spot, saying she had humiliated the girl who was talked about, according to court documents."

POPSGreen Schools Maybe I'm just missing something that has been going on behind the scenes, but it seems to me that the Buffalo Board of Education has not been incorporating rigorous standards into the massive rehabilitation of the schools which started a couple of years ago- but I will have to check on this a bit more. I think that it would probably be beneficial to halt the plans in order to incorporate more green strategies rather than continueing on at this point and then having to make changes in a couple of years when the government requires such measures of public facilities.

POPSYoung Children and Testing Dr. Daniel: High quality early childhood programs assess children’s learning to ensure that the curriculum is meeting young children’s needs. Curriculum and assessment occur in a never-ending cycle that allows teachers and parents to gather evidence of a child's progress in skill development as well as the understanding of concepts. If parents or teachers suspect developmental delays, a developmental screening can let them know if a further diagnostic evaluation is necessary. The input of a specialist combined with the observations of parents and teachers can be used to further individualize the child’s learning environment to maximize their growth and all around development. No one test or assessment should be used to determine a young child's future involvement in educational activities. NAEYC feels that high-stakes testing should not be employed among young children prior to the third grade. Young children are not reliable test-takers.

POPS30 Travel Scholarships, Fellowships, and Grants to Fund Your Next Trip Abroad
Begin by contemplating where you want to go and potential projects you could build around those destinations. (Or vice versa.) Always wondered how sustainable agriculture works in Guam? How about local conservation practices in Central America? Once you have a clear vision of a travel / research project, begin looking for funding possibilities that give you the most freedom to pursue your goals. When applying, take advantage of the resources and support systems you have. Your school, present or past, will have an adviser who can help you navigate the application process. Writing grant proposals can take a lot of time, but good advice can help focus your efforts. Your school or area may even offer their own scholarship opportunities–talk to your department or your study abroad office. Finally, even if funding from your school or other org close to home isn’t an option, you’ll find lots of other opportunities out there to fund your travel / project.

POPSSchool Choice in A Socialist Country
Continued: Before the reform, most families depended on state-run schools following a uniform national curriculum. Now they can turn to the "friskolor," or "independent schools," which choose their own teaching methods and staff, and manage their own buildings. They remain completely government-financed and are not allowed to charge tuition fees. The difference is that their government funding goes to private companies which then try to run the schools more cost-effectively and keep whatever taxpayer money they save. "If you run a good operation then you make a profit. But you won't get any students if you are bad," she said. "You have to do a good job to get money; that is even more important for a private school." "Today, I think we have at least as good quality if not better than some independent schools because we have really joined the battle and use our money in a much better way," said Eva-Lotta Kastenholm, who is in charge of public schools, a suburb of Stockholm.

POPSChaplains Serve Soldiers Given that attitude they feel attacked by “the devil” when prayer and Bible readings are outlawed in public schools, when active proselytizing is stopped at the Air Force Academy and now when prayers are requested to be removed from mandatory meals at the Naval Academy. Each of these initiatives is, however, not only correct, but each brings practice into conformity with the Constitution. I rejoice in this decision.

POPSIs Florida the Sunset State? Florida was once a swampy rural backwater, the poorest and emptiest state in the South. But in the 20th century, air-conditioning, bug spray and the miracle of water control helped transform it into a migration destination for the restless masses of Brooklyn and Cleveland, Havana and Port-au-Prince. I am a sixth generation Floridian, but I am told there are more than 4000 new people coming to live here every day.
