Penny Postcards
revenantdm
by revenantdm  Yesterday 5:41 PM    1
Tired of E-Cards??? Want to try something different for once? I found this site looking for a card for a dear friend's birthday the other day. I had to come back today to share it with all of you. It is fresh and funny and anything over a hundred years old that they can get their paws on you can find. Tagged and categorized, I do not think you can go wrong... and what was naughty 100+ years ago would not raise an eyebrow today... Oh, and monkeys are VERY BIG here! Fair warning.

Planet and star in puzzling waltz
Mohir
by Mohir  Yesterday 2:56 PM
Instead, the system might have started out that way. "It could be a coincidence, but I don't like explanations based on coincidence," says Aigrain. She suggests that magnetic fields might have helped to lock the system together, but stresses that it is pure speculation at this point. During its mission, COROT should discover many more planets. Aigrain and her colleagues hope they will then have a better idea whether synchronised systems are common, and what causes the phenomenon.

Not in MY NAME.
notareargunner
by notareargunner  Yesterday 9:56 AM
Last evening I had dinner with a former comrade and his son, a veteran of the Iraq illegal campaign. So incensed were all that the younger said he was prepared to stand against Marsden in the next election "to show the hypocrisy of the position". I have not had a single reply from Mr Marsden since I pointed out that the British Armed Forces were the only force in the World, especially in Europe, that has not derogated against homosexuals into the Armed Forces. And I asked him why not? It is a tool of enormous blackmail. From members of my own immediate family, all long serving members of HMF's, the abuse against heterosexual members is wide spread and getting worse. As with the race situation, you try to comply with QR&R's and you are hit with..."you can't do that. I'm a homosexual (substitute Black for race)." If you raise the problem you are immediately labelled homophobic. Nothing can be further from the truth. I did a six week stint on an OP in Belfast with five other men

Considering the recent advances in Brain-Machine interface, and the development of new neural implants, it is quite clear that Memory management is only the tip of the iceberg, I definitely agree with D.Peletier that the main effect of these new technologies will be to vastly improve our wellbeing

McCain gaffes pile up; critics pile on
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  7-23-2008    2
McCain's mistakes raise a serious, if uncomfortable question: Are the gaffes the result of his age? And what could that mean in the Oval Office? Voters, thinking about their own relatives, can be expected to scrutinize McCain’s debate performances for signs of slippage

Future Climate Change
LoPhatt
by LoPhatt  7-22-2008
The average surface temperature of the Earth is likely to increase by 2 to 11.5°F (1.1-6.4°C) by the end of the 21st century, relative to 1980-1990, with a best estimate of 3.2 to 7.2°F (1.8-4.0°C) (see Figure 1). The average rate of warming over each inhabited continent is very likely to be at least twice as large as that experienced during the 20th century. Warming will not be evenly distributed around the globe (see Figure 2): Land areas will warm more than oceans in part due to water's ability to store heat. High latitudes will warm more than low latitudes in part due to positive feedback effects from melting ice (as discussed above). Most of North America; all of Africa, Europe, northern and central Asia; and most of Central and South America are likely to warm more than the global average. Projections suggest that the warming will be close to the global average in south Asia, Australia and New Zealand, and southern South America. The warming will differ by season, with

UK House of Commons: U.S. Goverment Lied to us.
ratilfar
by ratilfar  7-21-2008
Cont... "Britain's denials that its territories have been used for "extraordinary rendition" were dramatically undermined last night after the United Nations claimed that Diego Garcia has been used as a detention centre to hold US suspects. . . . The revelations raise fresh questions about the island's role in the process of extraordinary rendition -- moving suspects to interrogation centres in third-party countries where they are held outside the law -- and why the UK government was apparently unaware that its ally was operating a prison on Diego Garcia to house so-called "high-value detainees"."

Lawmakers Could Consider Gas Tax Hike
merrie
by merrie  7-20-2008
Just three years ago, that trust fund enjoyed a surplus of $10 billion. Even without a tax freeze, the fund is projected to finish 2009 with a deficit of $3 billion. That that could grow as Americans drive less and buy less gas because of higher pump prices. The consequence is that only about $27 billion in federal money will be available next year to states and local governments for new infrastructure investment even though the current highway act calls for spending $41 billion a year. For many, the solution is to raise rather than suspend or cut federal fuel taxes, which haven't changed since 1993. The Transportation Construction Coalition, a group of industry companies and unions, said that if Congress does not do something about the shortfall, states will lose about one-third of their road and bridge money in the budget year starting Oct. 1. That would put 485,000 more jobs at risk.
