POPSNorway Grants King Penguin Knighthood The incumbent penguin is the second one to fill the role since 1972, as the average lifespan of the penguin is about 20 years. It all takes a suspension of disbelief - indeed, you might ask: "Are you having Olav?" To which there is only one reply: "That'll be Sir Olav to you."

POPSAug. 14, 1888: I Sing the Meter Electric Thomson invented a commutator watt-hour meter (that measured the energy consumed), also in 1888, and brought it to market the following year. It worked on both alternating- and direct-current systems, but fell by the wayside in the late 1890s when the induction watt-hour meter came into general use, where it remains to this day.

POPS25%+ of all Pentagon money is unaccounted for Why Bush & Co. love war. Little known fact: George Herbert Walker, grandfather of George Bush Sr. and George Bush Jr, besides being a major financier to the Nazis along with his son-in-law Prescott Bush, was also appointed supervisor of military contracts by Woodrow Wilson. Interestingly enough, it's much easier to find out details of the family's dealings with the Nazis than it is to uncover the simple, biographical fact that the Bush dynasty has been hardwired into the finances of the Pentagon since Day One. Ripping off the nation via the Pentagon is a four generation old business for this crew. No wonder they're so good at it. 9/11 helped then both cover their tracks and take things to a new level. Wow, that's a pretty good scam for some people...I wonder where all that tax money goes? It's bad enough how they rip us off legally, let alone down the rabbit hole to...?

POPSFreeeeeedom! of Information (National Security Archive) So much information, great site! National Security Archive Electronic Briefing Books provide online access to critical declassified records on issues including U.S. national security, foreign policy, diplomatic and military history, intelligence policy, and more. Updated frequently, the Electronic Briefing Books represent just a small sample of the documents in our published and unpublished collections. A tax-exempt public charity, the Archive receives no U.S. government funding; its budget is supported by publication royalties and donations from foundations and individuals. On March 17, 2000, Long Island University named the National Security Archive as winner of a Special George Polk Award for 1999 for "piercing self-serving veils of government secrecy" and "serving as an essential journalistic resource."

POPSAlcee Hastings Receives Harsh Criticizism From Black Congressional Candidate I fully agree with Allen West, a Black Congressional candidate's take on Congressman Hastings. Mr. West, I hope you win the election and bring your positive outlook on life, to the Halls of Congress as a manly counter-point to Alcee Hastings' poor-poor- little me (I laid my head on the railroad tracks but the train didn't come by) defeatist attitude. Keep up the good work!

POPSUntrained Informant Killed During Sting Former FBI agent Brad Garrett, an ABC News consultant, says it made no sense to use an inexperienced person like Rachel for a gun deal. "You have her make the phone call, you have the bad guys come into the picture and you never have her go to them," said Garrett, a veteran of scores of such undercover deals. "You arrest them in the park and she's never exposed to the gun or the dope," said Garrett. In the Hoffman case, police sent her out alone, with only one or two officers trailing her. The chief concedes she had not received any training as a confidential informant, or CI, before the dangerous mission. "As far as the training she receives, as far as training for, as a CI, we don't provide training for CIs," Jones told 20/20.

POPSOffsetting carbon offsets Aren't you pissed off? I have an idea. This would be a company that receives payments to support the usage of fossil fuels to offset the ridiculous carbon offset scams that are fraudulently bilking morons out of their money. Here is how it would work. If your carbon footprint is lower than Al Gore's, then you pay carbon offset offsets to projects that increase the use of fossil fuels for the purpose of increasing your carbon footprint to equal that of Al Gore's. Is this NOT BRILLIANT? And get this, it is not a scam. It is helping to defeat a scam and render the practice of scammers useless.

POPSWill Reid Bring A Vote To Open New Areas For Exploration
“Some people are just scared of the accusation that not leasing more acres has an impact on oil prices,” said Rep. Peter DeFazio, a senior Democrat from Oregon. “It just doesn’t.” Democratic lawmakers say the Reid-Bingaman proposal seems to be gaining momentum, though these same sources questioned whether Pelosi would schedule it for a vote in the House. But Pelosi has balked at scheduling any drilling legislation for a regular floor vote because that would give Republicans an opportunity to force vulnerable Democratic incumbents to vote on difficult amendments. Votes against expanded drilling would open Democrats to accusations that they had blocked efforts to lower record gas prices. Votes for Republican amendments to encourage more drilling, however, would anger environmental activists. Republicans are demanding votes on several amendments and have pledged to block Democrats from moving to other issues until drilling receives floor votes.

POPSWhat the heck is going on here? I've noticed this word co-conspirator occurring with much more regularity over the past few years. It sounds ridiculous to me. Does it annoy anyone else? Isn't it redundant? Like saying someone is a co-team-member? Doesn't the conspirator part automatically imply the co part. For example: A and B are conspirators. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

POPSUSA's Unhealthy Health Care Rating
**Up to 100,000 fewer people would die from causes that could have been prevented by good health care if the US achieved the lower mortality rates of leading countries **Thirty-seven million more adults would have an accessible primary care provider, and 70 million more adults would receive all recommended preventive care **The Medicare program could potentially save at least $12 billion a year by reducing hospital readmissions or by reducing hospitalizations for preventable conditions. **Reducing health insurance administrative costs to the average level of countries with mixed private/public insurance systems (Germany, Netherlands, and Switzerland) would free up $51 billion annually, or more than half the cost of providing comprehensive coverage to all the uninsured in the US. Reaching the lowest rate benchmarks (2 to 3 % of national health expenditures spent on adm. costs) set by the lowest countries Finland, Japan, and Australia—could save an estimated $102 billion per yea
