POPSHot Spings National Park Trails July 16 2010 It’s Rick’s Birthday today and I have been busy publishing his book Londons Times Our Favorites 13th Anniversary Edition. So for today’s blog I offer Friday in Flight, my favorite Birds. I have a long way to go with bird photography they move, fly and hop, so it’s a learning process.

POPSHot Springs National Park Trails June 28 2010 Storms are expected today so I head into the park early this morning. When I reach the top of the Tufa Terrace ramp I notice a horrible sight. A branch has one end carved to a point and has been jammed into a Chipmunk burrow. My heart ached for the fear this must have caused, I am thankful this burrow has several exits. When I reach the Peak Trail I am surprised to see one of the Rabbits on the paved path and not over in the grassy glen. Seeing one one of the two Eastern Cottontails has me wondering if there is nest tending or if the other was scared off. I hope the same people that was probing in the Chipmunk burrow did not find the Rabbits.

POPSHot Spings National Park Trails May 28 2010 I decided to get an earlier start this morning and I head directly up to the Dead Chief Trail and connect with the Short Cut Trail. An old friend reappears as I begin the incline of the Short Cut Trail, with each step they call out to me. I look and climb, excitement fills my heart when I look up at a long dead Tree. Wings Spread embracing the Tree is my friend a Red-bellied Woodpecker. I called out and they turn to looked my way and then hug the Tree again. We had a lovely conversation and I feel so thankful to see them.

POPSHot Springs National Park Trails April 08 2010 We started our Morning hike at the entrance to the park, with the sighting of an amazing White Dogwood in full bloom. We head over to the Dead Chief Trail and begin our ascent up Hot Spring Mountain. When we reach the junction of the Dead Chief and Short Cut Trails a lovely Red Bellied Woodpecker calls out from a distant Tree.

POPSHot Springs National Park Trails April 03 2010 When I woke up Hot Springs Mountain was covered in fog so I was out the door in less than an hour. I spotted both Brown Thrashers and Female Cardinals preparing nests as I head from the Tufa Terrace to the Peak Trail. On the Carriage Road one maybe two, Male Cardinals were flying from Tree to Tree singing a song that echoes in the lower areas of the park.

POPSHot Springs National Park Trails Mar 25 2010 The Spring Rain was back again today, it left a glossy coating on everything. I notice a cool rock as I enter the park, black with a vein of white. The Spring blossoms and tree buds are glistening from the mist of the light rain. The park is quiet as I hike up the Dead Chief to the Short Cut Trail. The trail ahead harbors an unexpected sighting, a small well fed cat/kitten is standing far up the path. I try to get close enough to the take a clear photo, but as I take a step forward it is off like a rocket.

POPSHot Spings National Park Trails Feb 23 2010 “Everything is significant, if we move in delicate wonder the Universe reveals itself to us.” ~ Lee Hiller Nature revealed herself at every turn today, on wings, little paws, the strength of trees and beauty of rocks. Each Step, each breath, all appeared as I hiked. On the Carriage Road a lovely squirrel peered out at me from a leafy tree branch. After a few minutes climbed down the tree and bounded across the path in front of me.

POPSHot Spings National Park Trails Feb 22 2010 The partly cloudy day became totally overcast, it was as if it was Twilight during my hike. The lightening storms yesterday had been very violent so many of the smaller birds and mammals were in hiding. The Promenade to the Carriage Road was very quiet, with only the occasional pip. I could not imagine how frightening the lightening must have been to those who live in the park. I looked up to see a tiny bird flitting around in the evergreen above me, it was a Yellow-Rumped Warbler, a joy to see it’s tiny beak.

POPSHot Spings National Park Trails Feb 20 2010 It’s the morning before a storm day that will include lightening, most creatures are on the ground foraging for food. The rustling of leaves makes the park sound like a giant bowl of Rice Crispies just after the milk has been poured. A Blue Jay high in a tree with a big berry in his beak is the only bird I have spotted since entering the park.

POPSHot Springs National Park Trails Feb 12 2010 Snow dusted the landscape as I entered the park this morning, light and fluffy the slightest breeze sent it up in the air falling lightly about me. The Robins were in the biggest trees enjoying a feast of berries and basking in the morning light. I headed to the Tufa Terrace and as I moved up the path a Chipmunk pop it’s head out of it’s burrow. I froze and waited to see if they would be heading out to forage, I did not want to frighten them as I knew it was important for them to get food. They popped back out and sat grooming for a few minutes then went back into the burrow.

POPSHot Spings National Park Trails Feb 10 2010 The icy climb to into the park continues, I am glad my arms are strong enough to pull me up the ice ramp. It is a cold day 26 feels like 21 degrees and I decide to move to the Carriage Road to get a bit of circulation going. When I arrive I am greeted by a Northern Phoebe and a Female Cardinal. It is a lovely way to start any day in the park.
