Palin
badbadkitty13
by badbadkitty13  8-29-2008
She opposes same-sex marriage, but complied with an Alaskan state Supreme Court order and signed an implementation of same-sex benefits into law, stating that legal options to avoid doing so had run out. She supported a non-binding referendum for a constitutional amendment to deny benefits to homosexual couples. Alaska was one of the first U.S. states to pass a constitutional ban on gay marriage, in 1998, along with Hawaii. Palin has stated that she supported the 1998 constitutional amendment.

Support an Iraq Referendum
sahara
by sahara  7-18-2008    3
We are continually told that we must stay in Iraq to prevent a sectarian blood bath. But the Iraqi people don't seem to share this fear, and perhaps with good reason. A study of violent attacks in Iraq indicates that the sectarian violence has largely subsided, and that most of the remaining violence is directed at the occupation, and at government officials who are perceived to be collaborating with US. forces. http://www.countercurrents.org/lin190308.htm This would seem to indicate that violence in Iraq could dwindle away to nothing, if only we would leave. Of course, no one can guarantee what will happen in Iraq if U.S. forces depart. But the same is true for the opposite position. It's possible that the violence will continue precisely because the occupation continues. It's time to cut through the pointless, circular debate. It's time to ask the Iraqi people what they want, NOT what U.S. politicians want. The Iraqi people should decide. That's democracy, isn't it?

UK Parliament OK's EU Treaty, Irish Voters Rejected
blueridge
by blueridge  6-18-2008    1
The Irish people were right. The UK parliament was wrong and disenfranchised their people from their own national sovereignty. The Tories could not prevent it. There are certainly large majorities of people in England, Scotland and Wales absolutely opposed to being under EU government. So much for "representative" government! So while the Irish dissent, the most independent nation in Europe bows to the usurping EU body politic that will strip their right and enlarge the puzzle being built toward World Government jigsaw.

Prime Minister Brown Admits EU Treaty Is Finished
merrie
by merrie  6-15-2008
Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Germany’s foreign minister, went further, stating that the Lisbon treaty provisions, which include the creation of a permanent EU president and the widespread abolition of national vetoes, could be implemented without Ireland. “Ireland for a period of time could leave the way free for the integration of the other 26 member states,” he said. In public, British ministers are insisting that a solution to the impasse can still be found. Jim Murphy, the Europe minister, yesterday told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “Only those who previously wished to dance on the grave of this treaty, even before the Irish referendum, are declaring it dead.” However, at this week’s Brussels summit, Brown will refuse to agree to anything that could leave the Irish out in the cold, according to aides. The only EU leader so far to admit that the treaty is dead is Vaclav Klaus, the Czech president, who declared the entire project “finished”.

Chavez to Try Referendum Again
DanaGarrett
by DanaGarrett  6-5-2008    25
Guess what will get missed AGAIN in the analysis of this story: 1. The Venezuelian voters will be ASKED once more to decide. 2. The ability of Chavez to run in COMPETITIVE elections is no different than what occurs in paralimentry democracies throughout the world. 3. The USA holds referendums on any matter of national interest.

Al-Sadr Embarasses US
DanaGarrett
by DanaGarrett  5-29-2008
What's Wrong this Picture? The Bush administration negotiates this deal behind closed door, only publicly refers to its terms during the negotiation in "vague" terms, and tells the elected members of Congress it's not their affair and he doesn't need their approval. Yet here is an Iraq Islamic cleric calling for a referendum on the agreement, public protests against it, a media drive opposing it and, if need be, a petition drive to give the people of Iraq a voice on the agreement. How embarrassing for us in the United States. This Islamic theocrat is actually more democratic and transparent than George Bush. If Al Sadr has his way, the Iraqi people will have more say on the US occupation of Iraq than we will. And we liberated them to be like us? LOL!!!

Democrat tied to Obama wins special election in Mississippi
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  5-13-2008
More: The special election was held to fill the seat of former Rep. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), who was appointed to serve out the remainder of Sen. Trent Lott’s term last December. Wicker had never faced a competitive race since first elected in 1994, and the district gave President Bush 62 percent of the vote in 2004. The results amount to a rebuke of the Republican strategy of trying nationalize the race by tying Childers to Sen. Barack Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Obama held low approval ratings in the district, but the nearly $2 million that GOP groups poured into northern Mississippi failed to make the race a referendum on the national political landscape. A GOP House leadership aide told Politico last week that “if we don’t win in Mississippi, I think you are going to see a lot of people running around here looking for windows to jump out of.”
