POPSOld Blighty, the birthplace of English "Collins' editors know that old words die hard — and that some people will vilipend (regard with contempt) any execution without a fair trial. So they've offered the chance of a reprieve. They have made public 24 words that face deletion because editors could find no example of their use in their database of English-language books, newspapers, broadcasts and other media. If, by February 2009, a word reappears in that database with at least six "high quality" citations, it could be spared from the semantic dustbin. "We're looking to see if dropping a little stone in the pond of language actually does generate ripples," says Brookes."

POPSBarack needs the embellishment
… as the months passed, I felt the idea of becoming an organizer slipping away from me. The company promoted me to the position of financial writer. I had my own office, my own secretary; money in the bank. Sometimes, coming out of an interview with Japanese financiers or German bond traders, I would catch my reflection in the elevator doors—see myself in a suit and tie, a briefcase in my hand—and for a split second I would imagine myself as a captain of industry, barking out orders, closing the deal, before I remembered who it was that I had told myself I wanted to be and felt pangs of guilt for my lack of resolve. If Barack was promoted, his new job responsibilities were more of the same - rewriting other people’s copy. As far as I know, he always had a small office, and the idea that he had a secretary is laughable. Only the company president had a secretary. Barack never left the office, never wore a tie, and had neither reason nor opportunity to interview Japanese financiers or

POPSStock Market Continues Fall, Fed Bails Out AIG Crisis continues. AIG gets what Lehman Bros did not--a bail out by the Fed. Maybe the fact that Lehman Bros hired Jeb Bush as advisor a year ago and another Bush as asset manager (see previous clipmark on Lehman) did have a role in deciding not to bail out Lehman, which sent the market into a tail spin as investors and pension companies change their portfolios away from these firms at risk. The Fed's "loan" will be in the form of printing more money (devaluing the dollar, increasing inflation) by the Fed (which is not a government institution, but private bank cartel). The Treasury Dept endorsed it, which is a reflection of the Bush administration. The Fed bailout really is the nationalization of AIG (a mark of socialism, communism), since they did it for a "return of 80% public stake in the firm". The Fed "owns" AIG now.

POPSHaven't we seen this election before? Similarities between the fictional Matt Santos and Barack Obama are striking; Santos was a charismatic newcomer, promising hope and raising the possibility of the first non-white Commander in Chief. In both style and content, he's a reflection of Obama. "The McCain candidacy is very similar to the Vinick candidacy," says Lawrence O'Donnell, who wrote the character. "They are good at appealing outside their own party. And that is actually one of their problems, within their own party, of Republicans not believing that they were Republican enough." In The West Wing, Arnold Vinick chose a very conservative Republican as his running mate in an attempt to appeal to his own political base. It's a move that McCain seems to have mimicked in his choice of Sarah Palin. "We ran this campaign in The West Wing before it happened in the country," says O'Donnell. "We got lucky on a lot of the stuff - we're not that smart."

POPSRove: McCain Campaign 'Beyond the 100% Truth Test' Boy Genius missteps and McCain's campaign of victimhood takes a little hit. The piece goes on: Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor, echoing Obama campaign language from Saturday, quickly blasted out a statement saying: “In case anyone was still wondering whether John McCain is running the sleaziest, most dishonest campaign in history, today Karl Rove -- the man who held the previous record -- said McCain’s ads have gone too far.” Karl is so not getting the GOP Christmas bonus this year...

POPSIt's Simple People - They Charge More Because We'll Pay It
It always dumbfounds me how people can get so "up in arms" about issues like this. A company delivers a product or service and charges for it. If supply is decreased, or demand is increased, or both, they can raise prices for the product or service. It's the first law of market dynamics. In the case of texting, we consumers can't get enough of it (demand). Supply isn't really an issue in this case because texting uses so little network bandwidth they can offer unlimited texting plans. It's simple then - the wireless operators have raised prices because we'll pay for it - we have to have our texting. If we want them to lower prices, we can all stop texting as much and instead use a different form of communication. It's like gas prices - we reached a point where the price was too high so we started using less and voila, the prices came down. Granted there were other factors involved, but decreased demand was a huge reason for it. Stop texting as much and prices WILL com

POPSGet Back to Jesus Somewhat of a follow up to the clips made from yesterday's blog. It is so easy to get sucked into planting a church and the "nuts and bolts" of what it takes and forget that we are making disciples. It actually takes longer to make disciples than it does to start a church. Jesus spent 3 years with his disciples. It took a betrayal, deserting, misunderstanding and the Holy Spirit to come to start the church. These ideas are what I'm trying to remind myself daily.

POPSThe Law of the Conservation of Violence
Edward S. Herman's article on Z-Net, touches some important points: Can we expect a "way different" (and peaceful) international policy , if Obama wins? Do the Democrats promise to put an end to that "muscular foreign policy" which have harmed America's image for years? An interesting read. Both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama on the campaign trail called for a larger army to meet U.S. "defense" needs. Now Obama wants us to take on a bigger commitment to violence. This will keep the arms cargo ships and planes busy and the bomb factories and plane and missile factories working at full capacity. Of course, those wanting infrastructure improvements and resources will have to wait and "hope" for a better future after our enemies are defeated and full hegemony and stability are established. They need a good dollop of "vision." The law of conservation of the level of violence thus rests on the structure of power and its reflection in politics. If you want to compete

POPSBrave New World of Digital Intimacy
It is easy to become unsettled by privacy-eroding aspects of awareness tools. But there is another — quite different — result of all this incessant updating: a culture of people who know much more about themselves. Many of the avid Twitterers, Flickrers and Facebook users I interviewed described an unexpected side-effect of constant self-disclosure. The act of stopping several times a day to observe what you’re feeling or thinking can become, after weeks and weeks, a sort of philosophical act. It’s like the Greek dictum to “know thyself,” or the therapeutic concept of mindfulness. (Indeed, the question that floats eternally at the top of Twitter’s Web site — “What are you doing?” — can come to seem existentially freighted. What are you doing?) Having an audience can make the self-reflection even more acute, since, as my interviewees noted, they’re trying to describe their activities in a way that is not only accurate but also interesting to others: the status update as a literary form.
