Older Vietnamese Americans Suffer Higher Rate of Mental Health Problems
Kelika
by Kelika  Yesterday 5:38 PM
"Huynh said Vietnamese Americans are wary of seeking help for mental problems because it is seen as taboo and is rarely spoken about. "It's a struggle," she said. "Seeking help is more of a last resort. They don't do it until they feel so helpless that they don't know where else to go.""

Murder's You Can Feel Sorry For
Imnclady
by Imnclady  8-25-2008
The experience turned the young Americans not only into professional documentary makers but gave direction to their lives. Their direction is to bring attention to this human disaster, hoping that the attention will force governments to apply pressure to resolve the conflict and free the children. You can also make a difference in the lives of these children. But you are going to have to watch the film first.

Russia Nullifies French-Brokered Armistice With Georgia
merrie
by merrie  8-20-2008    4
-- are implemented by Russia only in the sense that it no longer shoots or bombards Georgian troops and civilians. Russian troops, however, are blowing up bridges and other infrastructure on Georgian highways and railways, destroying Georgian military bases deep inside the country, and looting local Georgian civilian administrations at gunpoint -- all of this under the Sarkozy-brokered armistice. Point 3 in the agreement, “free access for humanitarian assistance and permission for refugees to return,” has also been torn apart. Access is impeded by Russia’s de facto naval blockade of Georgia’s coast and interdiction of cross-country transport in Georgia, continuing under this “armistice.” The few U.S. Air Force humanitarian assistance flights can not possibly cope with the magnitude of the task. The agreement’s 4th point, “Georgian troops are to return to the places of their regular stationing,” seems largely compromised by the devastation of those bases deep inside Georgia.......

'Where Was God?' - Refugees Ask
birdie-brain
by birdie-brain  8-15-2008
the family found a military convoy that helped get them to the convent, which has provided food and medicine to refugees. Thirty tons of supplies have poured into the convent from the Russian Orthodox Church alone. "We are working around the clock," Mother Nonna said. "We drowned in the flood of refugees." Recently washed children's clothing is strewn across the railings outside the convent, which functioned as a summer camp for the Communist youth group during the Soviet era and now includes a special rehabilitation center for children who survived the 2004 terrorist siege of a school in nearby Beslan. Dzara Kumeritova, an assistant at the convent, said that the refugees from South Ossetia all arrived terrified, most of the children too scared to eat for the first day or two. "Somebody slammed the door and the crowd shivered," she said. The article continues... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26206516/

This can't be true because everything the US does is good by definition. Why, it's tautological: the USA equals good. The US commit war crimes? That can't be because only the enemies of the US commit war crimes because the US says so and as we all know, the US never lies. LOL.

Man Killed Is A Hero In The Shotgun Attack In Tennessee Church
merrie
by merrie  7-27-2008    2
Police had cordoned off the church with yellow and red tape, and were taking statements and collecting video cameras from church members who were taping the performance. Owen said the FBI also was assisting in the investigation. The church's minister was on vacation in western North Carolina at the time of the shooting but returned Sunday afternoon. "We've been touched by a horrible act of violence. We are in a process of healing and we ask everyone for your prayers," the Rev. Chris Buice said in a statement outside the church. The Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church is a community that meets to worship and work together for social change, according to the church's Web site. Since the 1950's, the congregation has worked for desegregation, racial harmony, fair wages, women's rights and gay rights, according to the Web site. The congregation also has provided sanctuary for political refugees, fed the homeless and founded a chapter of the ACLU.

"Do Humans Have 23 years to Go?" Play Superstruct and Find Out -Invent the Future!
papananook
by papananook  7-18-2008
The Institute sees super-threats are "massively disrupting global society as we know it. There’s an entire generation of homeless people worldwide, as the number of climate refugees tops 250 million. Entrepreneurial chaos and “the axis of biofuel” wreak havoc in the alternative fuel industry. Carbon quotas plummet as food shortages mount. The existing structures of human civilization—from families and language to corporate society and technological infrastructures—just aren’t enough. We need a new set of superstructures to rise above, to take humans to the next stage." The Institute says: "You can help. Tell us your story. Strategize out loud. Superstruct now." Twitter that, Galaxians. Kind of makes Malthus look like a children's book.

In 1994, French forces in Rwanda established a security zone for refugees. In 1995, the British Parliament reconfirmed John Majors as prime minister. In 1997, NASA's Pathfinder landed on Mars to become the first U.S. spacecraft to land on the planet in more than two decades. Also in 1997, Mexico's top drug lord died in a Mexico City hospital following plastic surgery to change his appearance.

Mugabe Spoils for a Fight
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  7-4-2008
Lying is in political vogue these days. And it seems that the more blatant the lie the more easily it slips off the tongue How often do we need to hear proclamations of peace from obviously non-peaceful countries. Admittedly, Zimbabwe has not directly attacked it's bordering neighbors. Yet the millions of refugees his failed state has produced could be seen as a human tragedy shared by all the surrounding countries. And does this man have room for bluster. Apparently so. With all the chaos in his country he seems to find time to rattle a few sabers of his own.

Bush breaks from the past?
sillysam
by sillysam  7-2-2008    4
On the domestic front, Bush broadly expanded federal spending on education, signed campaign finance reform and orchestrated a huge expansion of health-care entitlements with his prescription drug benefit. Whatever the merits of those policies, it’s unlikely historians will see them as a radical, right-wing break from the Clinton years. much as Obama’s own foreign policy advisors have for a while — that his foreign policy promises will not survive contact with post-election reality. Already, Obama is changing his tune from his old, irresponsibly heated rhetoric about “immediate” withdrawal to talking about the need for policies that would adapt to the improving conditions in Iraq. Given Obama’s ideological leanings and inexperience, there’s clearly plenty of potential for him to make costly mistakes. But odds are he, too, would come to realize that America needs to win the war on terror and succeed in Iraq. Hence the greatest irony. A successful Obama presidency would have the u
