POPSGreenpeace Activists Arrested Protesting Oil Sands in Northern Alberta
“Today we brought our message to the perpetrators of this environmental crime with a clear message to put the brakes on the tar sands,” Hudema said. The tar sands use more water than any other Alberta user. Current projects are licensed to remove more than 450 million cubic meters of water from the Athabasca River each year, about two and a half times the amount of water used by the city of Calgary each year. After use, the water is so contaminated with toxic chemicals that it is stored in toxic tailings ponds so large that they can be seen from space. With today’s demonstration, the Greenpeacers targeted the same sludgy six-square-kilometer tailings pond where 500 ducks drowned in April, despite environmental regulations that require Syncrude to have wildlife deterrents in place. “We take a lot of pride in having systems in place to prevent birds from landing on settling basins and storage ponds,” Syncrude’s Katinas said at the time. “So we’re very saddened and sorry that

POPSAboriginal Rock Art at Risk But the peninsula is also seeing increasing industrial activity, including a gas processing plant, a fertiliser factory and iron ore port facilities, making it the only place in Australia to feature on the World Monuments Fund's list of the most endangered sites. Smalldon believes the rock art has suffered since mining took off in the Pilbara, which holds some of the richest mineral deposits on earth, in the 1960s. "We had nearly one million panels of rock art," Smalldon said.

POPSDemocrats Consider New Energy Strategy “I think there’s far more support across the board for SPR than anything else,” a senior aide said. Pelosi and other Democratic leaders have not said what the final SPR bill would look like, nor have they said what energy measures — which could also include a speculation bill — will be brought to the floor this week or under what rules.

POPSSchwarzenegger's Wage Slashing Order Won't Be Obeyed I predict that the terminator will end up terminating his harebrained idea about slashing state workers pay to minimum wage level now that he has started a rebellion. It turns out that ol' Arnie was trying to engage in a political stunt since the state does have enough funds on hand to meet its obligations. As to this callous GOPer's disregard to the little guy, one state worker proposed the appropriate corrective action: "I think the governor should fund the budget with his own resources until he and the Legislature can get together," said Paul Ablon, who has been a state attorney for nearly nine years. "And maybe he'll appreciate how it is to worry about paying your expenses."

POPSIf An Oil Man is Saying It... It has to make you think just how out of touch our government is with reality, when a "big oil" tycoon is telling Congress we need to invest more in alternative energy to ween ourselves off of foreign oil. Maybe Bush will listen to one of his own. Or maybe that's putting too much of an assumption on Bush being intelligent, which is a BIG assumption.
