POPSSpoons instead of making an extra trip to get it right now." I was impressed. I also noticed that there was a string hanging out of the waiter’s zip on his trousers. Looking around, I noticed that all the waiters had the same string hanging from their flies. So before he walked off, I asked the waiter, "Excuse me, but can you tell me why you have that string right there?" "Oh, certainly!" Then he lowered his voice. "Not everyone is so observant. That consulting firm I mentioned also found out that we can save time in the rest-room. By tying this string to the tip of you know what, we can pull it out without touching it and eliminate the need to wash our hands, shortening the time spent in the rest-room by 76.39 per cent." I asked "After you get it out, how do you put it back?" "Well," he whispered, "I don’t know about the others, but I use the spoon."

POPSHotel De Roode Leeuw Amsterdam I'm trying to find a decent, central and not too expensive hotel. This one looks ok and quite inexpensive for a 4-starred hotel! Any suggestion for a first trip to Holland? Ciao

POPSFormer half-ton man endures hard times
Patrick acknowledges willpower is not his forte. To the chagrin of Edie and Harris, Patrick still smokes a pack and a half of cigarettes a day. He also has a weakness for chips and salsa. “I notice that stress eating is something I do well,” Patrick said. The Deuels moved to an apartment in Alliance a little more than a year ago so Edie could take a job as a school counselor. Her contract wasn’t renewed at the end of the school year, and she remains out of work. Patrick also is unemployed. He said he’s been going through vocational rehabilitation to determine the type of work that would best suit him. The former restaurant manager said he definitely won’t work in food service again. There’s too much temptation, he said. The couple’s only income is Patrick’s monthly Social Security check of less than $600. POPSHot Destination: Lagos, Nigeria I haven't read much about travel to Nigeria, save George Packer's great article in the New Yorker (see here: http://www.newyorker.com/archive/2006/11/13/061113fa_fact_packer) about the city's informal economies. A New York Times reporter recently surveyed the city's nightlife, malls and substandard housing and found a huge gap between the wealthy and poor. I think it will be awhile before it becomes a real destination, but it should be interesting to see how travel there increases in the coming years.

POPSBob San Sushi in Chicago - Negative Review Last night I had an unfortunate run in with the manager at Bob San. First, let me preface this story by saying my wife and I have dined there multiple times, and enjoy sushi probably once a week. However, we will not be going back.

POPSIt's Too Hot For Them Dawgs "One might observe that when it comes to important issues like human rights in Tibet, Chinese leaders don’t seem to care what the rest of the world thinks, yet when it comes to dietary niceties, they kowtow to the most irrational foreign prejudice."

POPSWhat Do You Expect When You Give Your Kids Fast Food This study should have been a big DUH to most parents out there. The majority of the "restaurants" in this study were fast food chains. What do you expect from fast food? Whether it says "kids meal" or not, if it's at a fast food place, it's very likely not going to be healthy and nutritious. In these places, "kids meals" are often just marketing ploys based on popular kids shows or toys. They're not nutritionally balanced to truly be healthy for a child. Raising kids is a huge challenge, and with parents often working in addition to raising kids, they often need to find fast options to make things work. But you have to realize if you're getting fast food, it's not going to be healthy for your child.
