POPSWalter Kempowski, writer - confrontation between the private and the political spheres of life I remember the first time I read Tadellöser und Wolff being fascinated to discover that the Kempowskis spoke in their own language just like we used to, a mini-dialect, as it were, funny and cosy and irreverent. Talk is laced with self-fabricated Latinisms reminiscent of schooldays , with nautical terms , with Low German dialect and with snatches of hymns, rhymes and advertising jingles, depending on the context. The real sense of the Kempowski family conversation is almost impossible to translate adequately, and this is doubtless is true of all such homemade languages. After all, their purpose is the sharing of common humour and the expression of affection without the embarrassment of becoming too emotional, while at the same time excluding strangers from the conversation. POPSXML People Fun reading. "XML is ten years old today. It feels like yesterday, or a lifetime. I wrote this that year (1998). It’s really long. ... I never got around to publishing it, so why not now? Remember, it’s ten years old; some of the people and companies are in different places now."

POPSChildrens' classic deemed 'offensive' The people who make this kind of decision are probably the same people who drive John and Jill to school in the 4x4 for a distance of 100 yards so they won't come to any harm.

POPS Citizen Jane (rhymes with Kane) Politics dot com
Really comprehensive resource for male voters, as well. Having worked on Capitol Hill for nine years, I can tell you it's because the guys speak up a lot more. They give their opinions. Instead of asking, "Why me?" before writing an op-ed or running for office, they say, "Why not me?" After I left politics, I went to Columbia University for a master's degree in journalism. I then worked as executive editor at a magazine for a year, but kept seeing a gap in political coverage that I wanted somebody to fill. I wanted to see something about politics that was not a cheering section for either party; something written for women that had more than just gossip and fashion; something that understood that the stakes for the next election could not be higher, but that focusing on just doom and gloom can get a girl down. But if you feel like you've just seen the tip of the political iceberg, here is where you can learn more about what lies beneath the surface of American politics

POPS10 Facts about Dr. Seuss 7. What impact did they have on children's books? A revolutionary one. He has been credited with killing off "Dick and Jane", the sterile heroes of older children's books, replacing them with clever rhymes, plot twists and rebellious heroes who do the unexpected. The Cat in the Hat was commissioned following publication in 1955 of an influential book, Why Johnny Can't Read, which said children were being held back by boring books. An article under the same name in Life magazine called for more imaginative illustration, and named Dr Seuss as a good example of what could be done. Now one in four American children receive Dr Seuss as their first book. 9. What did he think was his greatest work? He once said it was not a book or an illustration, but the Lion Wading Pool at Wild Animal Park in San Diego, which he donated in 1973. 10. Which was his most controversial book? The Butter Battle Book, published in 1984, about the arms race.
