POPSPelosi: Oil Companies Should Pay Royalties The government grants private companies “leases” for the resources in exchange for a portion called a royalty. Democrats have been clamoring for legislation that allowed oil companies drilling in the Gulf of Mexico in 1998 and 1999 to pay a reduced royalty even though the price of oil had risen substantially. The royalty break was an incentive to drill amid low oil prices. Democrats have suggested that companies be required to repay the back royalties if they want federal leases in the future. Republicans have called that a breach of contract with the drillers. In addition, The Denver Post reported Sunday that federal investigators are preparing to release a report detailing improper relationships between Interior Department officials who oversee offshore drilling and oil executives, including golf outings, ski trips and romantic liaisons. Also, Pelosi has been pushing to end tax breaks granted to oil companies.

POPSIroquois Blueprint for the U.S. Our constitution has many Iroquois features. Iroquois lawmakers didn't go to war. Civilian and military rule was separate. The Iroquois had no royalty -- no hereditary rule. Their nations could naturalize new citizens. The League didn't just conquer other nations. It could also admit them to membership. We didn't adopt the Iroquois unicameral system. They had only one council. Franklin fought for that. Because he lost, we have both the senate and the house. Franklin also wanted to let soldiers elect their own officers. That's what the Iroquois did. He lost on that one, too. Still, our constitution is a fine piece of engineering design. We looked at the European kingdoms we'd left behind. And we looked at these people who'd governed themselves so well for so long. In the end Canassatego and the Iroquois tipped the scales in shaping our way of life. And we can be very glad they did.

POPSRecording Industry Decries AM-FM Broadcasting as 'A Form of Piracy' I'm sick of this word "Piracy". It's connotations of "stealing" as the RIAA likes to marry to the former. If I steal something I have deprived you of something as in stealing a car deprives you of said car. Theft of the material and tangible. But taking something that can be infinitely copied; seems brazen to call that stealing. The idea that the loss of "potential" profits doesn't stand with me either. To me that's just a way of saying "We have plenty, but we want even more." I'm fortunate that many of my favorite musicians have left this model behind (NIN, Radiohead to name two) and have taken the stance that music is meant to be heard and not hoarded.

POPSBush To Press Congress On Offshore Oil Drilling Bush also will reiterate his call for development of oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, Perino said. McCain has opposed drilling in the refuge, maintaining that the pristine areas in northeastern Alaska should be protected from energy development. On Monday, McCain made lifting the federal ban on offshore oil and gas development a key part of his energy plan. The Arizona senator said states should be allowed to pursue energy exploration in waters near their coasts and receive some of the royalty revenue. Bush has made clear in recent weeks that the drilling moratorium in coastal waters should end to allow for more domestic oil production and help "take the pressure off the price of gasoline." Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic candidate for president, opposes lifting the ban on offshore drilling and says that allowing exploration now wouldn't affect gasoline prices for at least five years.
