The Debate: I Learn Something New Every Day
merrie
by merrie  10-8-2008    3
Apparently 95% of us will need to sacrifice by enjoying Barack's tax cut and new health care plan but some will sacrifice by paying more in taxes. Raising taxes to battle a recession - well, you can't say Obama lacks for original ideas. THE OBAMA DOCTRINE: Obama asserts that America has a moral obligation to intervene with force in certain foreign circumstances and cites the Holocaust. His gist - if we could have intervened effectively to prevent the Holocaust we should have. Hmm - many have argued that the rail lines to Auschwitz were within range of US bombers yet Roosevelt did nothing. Both George Bush and George McGovern think Roosevelt erred - $79 BILLION: Obama was wrong about the Iraqi budget surplus at the last debate and he is still wrong.

Santeria followers fight for religious freedom
tommy2balmy
by tommy2balmy  9-25-2008
Pichardo thought Santeria needed to be more organized to enjoy its full legal rights. He put those rights to the test in the late 1980s, when he tried to open a worship hall in Hialeah. Many of his fellow Cuban-Americans howled in protest. Some said it was Satanic or anti-Christian. They also protested the slaying of animals on the property, and in 1987, the city council passed a law banning "public ritualistic animal sacrifices." The church argued that its constitutional religious rights had been violated, and six years later, the law was struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Biden Sacrifices
willhelm
by willhelm  9-15-2008    36
Why do Obama and Biden hate giving money to charity? "But for people who have studied the impressive generosity of the American public, there is news in Biden’s returns. “I’m not going to say he’s a bad guy,” says Arthur Brooks. “My only point is that his values are not typical American values when it comes to charitable giving. Americans in general are very generous.”

Shame. Johnny Gurkha
notareargunner

Peter Mendelson had a visa for his bum bandit toy boy within days of deciding he wanted the boy. Thousand of our sternest allies are being denied access to the safety and security that their sacrifices have created. What's wrong with the electorate? Who would you rather have as an ally, the politician who is an habitual liar and gets everything his office demands; or the simple soldier who would die to keep you safe? I know which one you deserve, and while that parasite sucks out enormous expense claims and unearned salary, we loose the respect of the very men we ought to be giving everything to.

About Obama’s Comments At The Holocaust Memorial And Museum
merrie
by merrie  7-24-2008
continued; going without at home to help the fighting men overseas. Words matter. Perhaps my words in the post, Obama: WWII won by speaking out as one voice, were not adequate to portray the betrayal of America’s–and the worlds–greatest generation. Perhaps I am simply making too much of nothing. Sure, Obama will say, it was just a euphemism; of course he honors the sacrifices, blah blah blah. But I do not believe this is the truth. I believe that his words do mean something. His words assault the reality and remove the sacrifices. His words turn my grandparents and great uncles and great aunts into nothing, pushed aside in favor of modern liberal rhetoric with no goal beyond winning an election. Our greatest generation did not speak out. They fought; they sacrificed; they died; and, ultimately, they saved the world.

Obama: 'There's no doubt that Gen. Petraeus does not want a timetable'
jatfla
by jatfla  7-22-2008
Of course Gen. Petraeus is only concerned about financing his pet war in Iraq. s/off. Petraeus doesn't want *artificial* timetables that would undermine the progress that's been made. Maybe if the Senator would come back to the US, assume the job he's being paid to do (deal with legislation in the Senate), learn a little and not sound so stupid then he might be better able to help the US economy which HE claims is really hurting.

Gore Less Welcome When Gas Costs 4 Bucks
merrie
by merrie  7-17-2008    2
Some lawmakers warn that Americans are angry about gas prices and don’t necessarily want to be reminded about the economic sacrifices that may be necessary to reduce the nation’s oil consumption. “People’s anger about a lot of things is crystallized as a result of the gas prices,” said Lautenberg. “The anger is focused by the visibility at the pump.” Lautenberg warned that Americans aren’t eager to hear about the need for more financial sacrifices if there’s not a possible reward in the not-too-distant future. “If it looks like it’s just a continuation of an attack of our economy and family budgets, then its starts getting dispiriting,” he said of innovative yet expensive energy proposals.

Obama Should Follow Feingold
papananook
by papananook  7-7-2008
That’s bad — not just because Obama is putting politics ahead of principle, but because he’s calculating the politics wrong. As Feingold proved when he was overwhelmingly re-elected in a swing state in 2004, after casting the sole vote against the Patriot Act, standing strong for the Bill of Rights attracts rather than sacrifices votes. Even worse is the deceptive claim that the “compromise” on FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) reached by the Bush administration and congressional leaders allows for meaningful scrutiny. As Feingold says, “The proposed FISA deal is not a compromise; it is a capitulation. The House and Senate should not be taking up this bill, which effectively guarantees immunity for telecom companies alleged to have participated in the president’s illegal program, and which fails to protect the privacy of law-abiding Americans at home. Allowing courts to review the question of immunity is meaningless when the same legislation essentially requires the co

Bush & McCain Support the Troops by Saying...F**k 'em!
zasel
by zasel  5-26-2008    1
President Bush and Presidential wannabe Senator McCain are always bragging about how they support the troops and honour their service. Oh yeah! This sounds great, but when it comes to actually doing something good and fair for them when they return from the firing line, they say fuck 'em. No money for their education or other benefits. After all, if we make it too good, they will wanna leave the service rather than remain canon fodder indefinitely. Neither of these political pieces of fecal matter stop to think about how increased and improved GI benefits will bring additional people into the service that will more than make up for those who might leave after three years. All they care about is having enough bodies willing to be shot up in Iraq so they can maintain their illegal and tragic war. These war criminals should hang their heads in shame as should anyone who would consider voting for McCain after seeing what a hypocrite he really and truly is.

NYT: Bush 'Lavish With Other People's Sacrifices'
Wisco
by Wisco  5-26-2008
NYT editorial board takes Bush to the woodshed over his promised veto of the 21st Century GI Bill. Bush will hide behind the troops, equating his own stupid and brutal policies with "supporting the troops," but when it comes to actually doing something for vets, Bush can't run away fast enough. This is shameful behavior from a US president and every paper in the nation should run similar editorials.

If you're in need of a quick break from the daily grind, check out this new, free software from Microsoft called WorldWide Telescope. It's a program that allows users to easily scan the universe and look at nebulas, star clusters and other very cool things. I downloaded it quickly and was able to use it immediately. The images are astonishing and it will leave you craving to know more about outer space. I hadn't given much thought to intergalactic travel before seeing this, but I'm now definitely intrigued.
