POPSKeep the government out of the news business
Turning to Washington for help to save the declining news business says much about the mentality of mainstream journalism leaders, an attitude that we and the government are on the same side. This is the mentality that led to the news establishment’s acceptance of the Iraq War. Go to the clip to learn what happened to Mother Jones after becoming a tax exempt non-profit after it reported on lobbying in Washington. Once you allow the government or private corporation to have any controlling link to the media you lose independence. Editors become fearful of criticizing the hand that feeds it. Publishers and benefactors become cozy and unbiased reports become fewer and fewer. Journalism becomes a de facto advertisement for consumer products. We hope in the future we’ll see more I.F. Stones, more guerrilla warriors on the Web, in print and on the air. Because of them—and not because of a government handout—great reporting will survive, as it always has.

POPSCapitalism again proves to the the source of the problem
This article is a must-read. The unfair capitalist healthcare system causes a glut on doctors in rich areas where they can earn more, and a sparsity in areas where they would earn less, like poor communities. Do people still think that America can get by without reforming Healthcare? Doctor's salaries need to be standardized, so a doctor working in a dirt-poor area of Arkansas is going make the same amount (by scale of skill) as a doctor in Malibu, California. 50 million uninsured Americans, and another 50 million underinsured Americans are too many people to be excluded from proper, complete healthcare. It's criminal, and amoral. C'mon, all you right-wingers! Don't you think that women and newborn children dying from perfectly preventable causes during childbirth is more important that wondering if federal money is going to perform abortions? Don't you think that people ending up losing limbs or eyesight due to lack of care for their diabetes is more important than getting all work

POPSProfessors want UCB to stop subsidizing sports programs at expense of academics More: "The data is eye-opening and quite troubling - athletic expenditures are rising three or four times faster than academic budgets," said William "Brit" Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland. He's co-chairman of the Knight Commission, which on Monday released a survey of university presidents' views on the cost of programs in the Football Bowl Subdivision, the nation's 120 top college football teams. "We're painfully aware of the global fiscal implosion and the impact it's having on academic institutions," Kirwan said. "As a result, 75 percent of presidents say we can't continue on this path."… The last time the athletes ran up a multiyear debt - owing the university $31.4 million by 2007 - the bill was forgiven, according to a written explanation of Cal's athletics budget and policies prepared in response to questions from the faculty.

POPSBMW to Cap Executive Pay - wundervoll! Now let me get this straight. GM, Ford, and Chrysler have all lost market share in the US and complain that worker wages and benefits made them uncompetitive. Germans assembly line workers average $60,000 a year and BMW sales have not plummeted as US car makers have. And now, BMW says they are capping executive pay by establishing the current ration of difference 25-1 as THE ratio. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average U.S. worker earned $29,544. The ratio of CEO pay to average pay is 364:1 and to minimum wage is 885:1. So... Why is it that US car companies have trouble competing?

POPS Pay Czar Targets Salary Cuts Mr. Feinberg is expected to issue by mid-October his determination on compensation packages for 175 of the most-highly compensated executives and employees at the seven firms he oversees. The move will further reshape pay at those firms and could complicate efforts by some of those seven companies to attract top executives and employees. The issue could be particularly acute for Bank of America, which is searching for a successor to Kenneth Lewis, who announced plans to resign as chief executive of the company last week. A Bank of America spokesman said the bank declined to comment on compensation issues regarding the chief executive. "We have been in close communication with Feinberg and our compensation going forward is very much in line with his guidance," the spokesman said. POPSThe Shameful Silence of Many Black Ministers
These are the black ministers that conservatives love. many are deeply mired in a single-minded pursuit showy, pricey new buildings, glittering furnishings, inflated salaries, expense accounts, globe-trotting trips, and endless pitches for collections. ... fancy cars, expensive homes, clothes, and jewelry has done more to fan the popular public image of black ministers as fast buck con artists. While some black ministers make a mighty effort to address deep seated social ills and use their influence to be spiritual mentors and social advocates, they are in the minority. black ministers that slump into complacency and inaction, and hopelessly enmeshed in greed and personal aggrandizement have rejected Dr. King's call to take the front line in the battle for social justice. They forget or ignore the entreaty in Luke to "put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalt those of low degree." They have spiritually and socially disarmed many African-Americans.[/quote

POPSGovernment, The Destroyer Of Worlds' Now you can see why President Obama is hell-bent on nationalizing one-sixth of the economy with his thinly disguised health care "overhaul". It helps hasten the destruction of the hated free market system and perhaps capitalism itself.

POPSHouse Bill Aimed at the Funds for Appointed 'Czars' Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution entrusts the U.S. Senate to advise and provide consent on executive nominations, the release states. "There is little information about their qualifications, what department they belong to and what power they hold. They need to be accountable to Congress and the American people, but the appointment of 'czars' circumvents the system and violates our system of checks and balances," Boozman said in the release. The law extends beyond cabinet-level appointments. Assistant secretaries and undersecretaries must follow the process of Senate confirmation, but only seven of the 34 czars appointed by President Obama have been confirmed by the Senate, the release states. H.R. 3226 is sponsored by U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga.

POPSMoney For CIA Witch Hunts, Federal Boondoggles, and ACORN But Not For Locking Up Terrorists
with Joshuapundit focusing more on the institutional impacts and Right Truth going after Obama's motives. The reflexive liberal sympathy for terrorist prisoners - a sensibility usually justified with gestures toward the rule of law or toward "our values" - extends all the way into freeing filthbags like Megrahi and coddling rogues like Iran and its proxies. See Soccer Dad's post on that. Bookworm Room described sitting through Julie & Julia. Liberal filmmakers seem to believe they get extra credit for slipping gratuitous anti-conservative stereotypes into their works (they used to in cinema school - old habits die hard). This self-satisfied sneering is a particularly charming aspect of Blue State cocoons, though to get the full experience you really need to go to Broadway. Those tools are still slipping unscripted anti-Bush references into their songs, much to the delight of their aren't-we-oh-so-liberal-together audiences.

POPSAn enemy of today's capitalistic economic system..... QFS: Hitler was intent on having a community of mutual interest that desired mutual success instead of one that was divided over the control of money or differing values. THE COMMON INTEREST BEFORE SELF-INTEREST - THAT IS THE SPIRIT OF THE PROGRAM. BREAKING OF THE THRALDOM OF INTEREST - THAT IS THE KERNEL OF NATIONAL SOCIALISM. In these straightforward statements of intent, Hitler translated his ideology into a plan of action which would prove its popularity with the German people throughout the coming years. For many, the abruptness of its departure from the tradition of politics as practiced in the western world was as much of a shock as its liberal nature and foresight of the emerging problems of western democracy.

POPSWhy Doesn't Waxman Intervene To Limit Baseball--NAY ALL SPORT'S SALARIES!? Obama - who knows about as much about baseball as I do about the mating habits of pterodactyls - would sign it. DONE DEAL! Then they could do all the other sports. AND THEN FASHION: AFTER ALL, CLOTHING IS A NECESSITY: SO WHY SHOULD DESIGNERS AND RETAILING EXECUTIVES MAKE A LOT OF MONEY!?! AND WHATTABOUT RESTAURANTS!? FOOD IS A NECESSITY, SO LET'S PUT A PRICE CAP ON EVERY DISH!!!!! This is the natural progress of leftist logic, so called. And it's dangerous. It's a grave and clear and present danger to our country. It must be stopped. - Posted by Reliapundit

POPSUC Regents demonstrate tone deafness with raises
More: I think reasonable people could agree the current job descriptions of the aforementioned federal employees are just as demanding as the UC employees who received stipends on top of their salaries because they had to assume additional responsibilities. …When I hear the "You got to pay good people" argument, three things come to mind: First, I agree, assuming all things are reasonably normal, which is clearly not the case in California today. Second, good people would know the timing for these raises are poor and if everyone is having to sacrifice, they would at least be amenable to waiting for a more appropriate time. Third, if they can't wait along with the other 180,000, then maybe they are not as good as advertised, and it might be a good idea if they did go somewhere else. …The increased salaries reflect a body insulated from the impact of the abominable timing and perceived arrogance of their actions — a group severely tone deaf of the justifiable public outcr
