POPSElements brought to life online from BBC News: The chemical elements are being brought to life online in a series of YouTube videos filmed at a UK university. The project by a team in Nottingham is designed to stimulate interest in chemistry and comprises videos illustrating each of the 118 elements. They feature a variety of experiments, some of which are too dangerous to be performed in classrooms. In the videos, scientists also recall personal anecdotes and amazing facts about each element in the table, from hydrogen (1) to Ununoctium (118).

POPSWhat Fish Are You Really Eating? Detective work by two sushi-loving high school students has shown that New York sushi restaurants and seafood markets are mislabeling their products - often selling cheaper species as more expensive varieties. The duo used a simplified genetic fingerprinting technique to look at the fish DNA and uncover the truth. The study was small, involving just 60 samples, but it's likely that these few restaurants and grocery stores aren't the only ones in on the game. Considering how many people are turning to fish these days for its health benefits, and the fact that those can vary from species to species, this should raise concern.

POPSBigfoot Is 96% Possum But that's not the great part. I mean, a half-human, half-ape, or, less crudely, some kind of australopithacine, would be a momentous discovery, of course. But a half human, half possum? That's comic book territory.

POPSThe Olympic theme music is Leo Arnaud's "Bugler's Dream" For some reason this question has been bugging me -- what's the origin of that little brass fanfare that we all (in the U.S.) recognize as the theme music to the Olympics? Turns out it was written in 1958 by composer Leo Arnaud as part of a film score.

POPSSaving Money on Prescription Drugs http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/2005/505_save.html An article on ways to save money on prescription drugs. One suggestion is communicating with your physician on what you can afford in terms of prescription drugs. Ask if a generic version of the drug is an option or ask for resources on financial assistance from the government and/or drug companies. Another option the article gives is drug samples.

POPSIt's Good to be a Corporation in US! More than 38,000 foreign corporations had no tax liability in 2005 and 1.2 million U.S. companies paid no income tax, the GAO said. Combined, the companies had $2.5 trillion in sales. About 25 percent of the U.S. corporations not paying corporate taxes were considered large corporations, meaning they had at least $250 million in assets or $50 million in receipts. The GAO said it analyzed data from the Internal Revenue Service, examining samples of corporate returns for the years 1998 through 2005. For 2005, for example, it reviewed 110,003 tax returns from among more than 1.2 million corporations doing business in the U.S. Dorgan and Levin have complained about companies abusing transfer prices -- amounts charged on transactions between companies in a group, such as a parent and subsidiary. In some cases, multinational companies can manipulate transfer prices to shift income from higher to lower tax jurisdictions, cutting their tax liabilities.

POPSMars toxin doesn't rule out life NASA The seas early in the history of the planet Earth were thought by NASA to be toxic to oxygen breathing organisms http://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/2005/oct/HQ_05338_toxic_seas.html Oxygen was also thought to be toxic to the majority of organisms existing at the time. The introduction of oxygen through photosynthesis when it evolved in plants, being the basis for one of the first Mass-extinction events. Nature has managed to squeeze energy from more toxic chemicals than perchlorate. Toxicity can be relative. Chlorine can be toxic in bleach, but can assist the conductivity of electricity ( when combined with sodium-salt) in non conductive organic materials. Still I thought it was funny this time scientists weren't just 'surprised', they were 'stunned' Beats me why they're still determined to find life on Mars, when life on Earth is getting such little respect.
