POPSSarcasm Seen as Evolutionary Survival Skill It's also easy to imagine how sarcasm might be selected over time as evolutionarily crucial. Imagine two ancient humans running across the savannah with a hungry lion in pursuit. One guy says to the other, "Are we having fun yet?" and the other just looks blank and stops to figure out what in the world his pal meant by that remark. End of friendship, end of one guy's contribution to the future of the human gene pool. Fast forward a few million years and the network of human relationships is wider and more complex, and just as important to survival. The corporate chairman throws out a sarcastic remark and those who "get" it laugh, smile, and gain favor. In the same way, if the chair never makes a remark, sarcastic people are making them behind his or her back, forming a clique by their mutually negative, but funny, comments. Either way, sarcasm plays a role in making and breaking alliances and friendship.

POPSanother Zen paradox - a dumb approach to life is the smart way to be Although I don't know that I'd want him as a teacher, I like reading Brad Warner's writings about Zen. He has a way of cutting through the extraneous crap swirling around something and going straight for the core. A lot of people think he's an asshole. Reading the comments on his blog postings is an excellent practice opportunity, I find. Thinking, "wow, look at all these people projecting onto Brad" helps me turn my attention to "oh, and look at me projecting onto all these people."

POPSApology denied: Once we recognize their humanity, we've lost
some deep sarcasm here. continuing... Nothing drives this truth home quite as blatantly as America's mercenary army in Iraq, which is immune from prosecution under either Iraqi or U.S. law. And the baddest of the American privateers are the Blackwater guys, about whom a rival security contractor told Fortune magazine: "They always shoot first and ask questions later. When we're out in country, we often fear Blackwater more than the Iraqis." Back on Sept. 16, Blackwater personnel -- not for the first time -- convulsed the people to whom we are bringing democracy with an unprovoked shooting rampage. While providing security for a U.S. embassy mission, they opened fire in the crowded square. By the time they stopped, 17 Iraqis lay dead and another several dozen were wounded. These were just ordinary people going about their lives. No one had fired at the security team first, witnesses insisted. But apparently something spooked them, and when you're not accountable under any law, why

POPSObese People to Be Banned By Miss. Restaurants This is hysterical. I know I have an obese cousin who is eating himself to death. My aunt is aiding and abetting. Instead of not letting overly obese people in restaurants, they should force all of them to join Weight Watchers or wire their mouth shut. That was sarcasm for those who didn't know. I am tired how we are constantly trying to babysit people that are old enough to vote. They know the dangers of overeating, smoking, drugs, etc., so there is nothing we can do but let them realize the mistakes they are making on their own. It's ridiculous this bill was even thought up in the first place.

POPSCancer is Funny? "Don't expect Planet Cancer to go saccharine any time soon. Adams said the group will continue to infuse wit and pop culture into its work – just the way its fans like it."
