POPSExtreme Eats There's a scene in the 1970 film Fatso when an overweight character poses the following question to his friends: "Did you ever suck the jelly out of a jelly doughnut and then fill it with chocolate swirl ice cream?" Most people react to that query in one of two ways: They either say to themselves, "That's disgusting!" or "That's disgusting ... I want one!"

POPSToday's word of the day: Hendiadys A "hendiadys" (fr. Gk. "one through two") is a literary figure in which a pair of concepts in a subordinate relationship are presented as conjoined. Examples: "nice and warm" instead of "nicely warm"; "sound and fury" instead of "furious sound"; "pain and toil" intead of "painful toil"; and so forth. First spotted in Robert Alter's footnote to Genesis 5.29.

POPSDiplomatic Breakthru in Georgia: Red-Faced Russian Party Crashers Retreat continued.........but nobody thought it was going to turn into a big ugly scene." Russia's invasion prompted a quick stern response from GOP presidential candidate John McCain, while Democratic candidate Barack Obama urged Russia and Georgia to "work together to iron out their differences," and "chills, y'all." After learning that Georgia was a US ally, Obama clarified the remarks, demanding that Russia withdraw its troops north to Tennessee and West Virginia. "Everyone was just sort of staring at Russia, who's in the middle of beating the hell out of Georgia, and Russia's like, 'what? Come on man, you have to admit it's funny,'" said a source with UNSCOM. "So Russia's going around, looking for high fives and is like, 'don't leave me hangin', bro,' but the G8 gives him the total gas face, so he's like, 'whatever, dude, this party sucked anyway.'"

POPSBest clip yet (Is auteurism in the industry killing games?) This has to be right up my street - feminist criticism of film theory followed by humorous reference to DDR. The article is actually about seeing a game project as the creative vision of a single person versus being more hippy, diverse and fair, to say that actually it's a glom of the efforts and directions of lots of people. It's focused on the indie scene and frankly I've forgotten the points it makes because I've been surfing the links contained within onto Artgames Blog and Cave Story Downloads. I don't think it makes a terrifically powerful arguement against auterism overall tho', but rather brings out some of the familiar ammunition I already knew about from the film theory world. A world I know a little bit more about, now.
