POPSWhat is the worst environmental disaster in history? Despite the relatively small amount of oil released, several factors contributed to the spill's severity: timing, location, abundance of wildlife and substandard cleanup efforts. In comparison, one of the largest oil spills in history, the rupture of an oil well in the Gulf of Mexico that released 140 million gallons (3.3 million barrels) of oil, caused relatively little damage because it happened in the open sea where currents and winds contained it until it disintegrated.

POPSHow to wreck $100,000,000 worth of cars Mazda Corp. decides to destroy almost 5000 new vehicles after an almost-sinking freighter exposes them to unknown environmental stresses. Turns out wrecking a lot of new cars isn't as easy as it sounds: they created a "disassembly line."

POPSArtificial Life On The Horizon?! From the Wiki entry for "AI: Artificial Intelligence": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A.I._(movie) "The story is set at an unspecified date in the future. Global warming has led to an ecological disaster resulting in a drastic reduction of the human population and rising sea levels. Cities like New York City and Venice lie in ruins. Mankind’s efforts to maintain civilization lead to the creation of android artificial intelligence." Strangely and powerfully prescient.

POPSIn a Strategic Reversal, (some!) Dutch Embrace Floods I am surprised to see that what I thought was one of the most proactive nations - the Netherlands - has a population that has 'tuned out' to climate change. I guess that many citizens will hope they can come emigrate to Neu Zeeland when the flood risk rises!

POPSSea surrenders ring 89 years on Mr Hamilton, 61, said: "We've dived the site several times but have never found any significant wreckage. "When we realised Peter had found something of such a personal nature we knew we had to try and return it to the family." Having found the ship's casualty list on the internet and with information from the 1901 census, the divers, with the help of Mr Hamilton's wife Sue, placed Mr Cubiss' parents in Yorkshire. They also discovered that following her husband's death, Florence had remarried. From there, a trawl of the telephone directory revealed a listing for a JM Cubiss in York. Mr Hamilton said it was with "a degree of trepidation" that he decided to call and see if he had any connection with Stanley's family.

POPSCrying Wolf? Many people will look at this story and similar ones as proof that they somehow can't trust in science. Every day we're told of these scientists "changing their minds". Hormone therapy is bad, hormone therapy is ok. Polar bears are in danger, polar bears are doing fine. What's a person to believe? Remember people that it's not the role of science to proclaim dogma but to investigate reality and that is one complicated job. New facts are discovered every day which necessitate shifts in viewpoint. Contrary to public opinion, this is the strength of science instead of the weakness of science. We need to remind ourselves how our ability to predict the path of storms and the possibility of other natural occurring events is unimaginably complicated. Considering our track record so far I think we're doing pretty good.

POPSEarth could 'flip' into environmental disaster The study looked back over more than 400,000 years of climate records from deep ice cores and found evidence to suggest that rapid climate change over a period of centuries, or even decades, have in the past occurred once the world began to heat up and ice sheets started melting. "The unnatural "forcing" of the climate as a result of man-made emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases threatens to generate a "flip" in the climate that could "spark a cataclysm" in the ice sheets of Antarctica and Greenland. Dramatic climatic flips have occurred in the past but none has happened since the development of complex human societies, which are unlikely to survive the same sort of environmental changes if they occurred now." It has already flipped, contrails, shiptrails, and other trails have , so far, saved the earth. jc

POPSBottom Trawling is a disaster Our ocean floors are being wrecked as bottom trawling bulldozes these sensitive areas. Fish stocks and marine systems are being totally wrecked by commercial interests. These people work in a devious underhand way knowing these foul practices are hard to highlight and verify.
