Great White Sharks Have Their Own Cafe
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  11-5-2009
"Over an eight year period, nearly 100 sharks were electronically tagged, and even more had tissue samples taken by scientists working from a ship. Not only do the sharks consistently migrate along the same paths, they stick to a schedule too. Between August and December, the Great Whites -- which can grow up to six metres (20 feet) and three tonnes -- stalk waters off the coast of central and northern California, feasting on seals and sea lions. Their preferred hunting grounds in this area are known as the "red triangle", notes the study, published in the British journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. Starting in January, they head for the deep blue around Hawaii some 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) to the west, where they are found in largest numbers between April and July. But some -- especially males -- loiter at a halfway point known as the "White Shark Cafe", with females coming and going for what scientists presume is a bit of shark intimacy. The new findi

Great Whites Hang Out in 'Shark Cafe'

It had long been assumed shark species at the top of the ocean food chain that roam the high seas looking for food and mates did so almost randomly. But using satellite tagging, acoustic monitoring of shark "hot spots" and genetic samples, a research team led by Professor Barbara Block of Stanford University found to their surprise that the eastern Pacific's great whites are real homebodies. Over an eight year period, nearly 100 sharks were electronically tagged, and even more had tissue samples taken by scientists working from a ship. Sticking to a schedule They found that the sharks consistently migrate along the same paths and stick to a schedule. Between August and December, the great whites, which can grow up to six metres and weigh three tonnes, stalk waters off the coast of central and northern California, feasting on seals and sea lions. Their preferred hunting grounds in this area are known as the "red triangle", notes the study.

Law Enforcement Agents Raid Part of Terrorism Probe

Navy Seals Kill Wanted Terrorist in Somali Raid Monday, September 14, 2009 Navy Seals from US Special Operations Forces conducted a raid in southern Somalia on Monday that killed Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, one of 4 co-conspirators wanted in the 2002 bombing of an Israel owned hotel in Mombasa, Kenya, two senior U.S. military officials told Fox News. Ten days ago President Obama signed the Execute Order for Nabhan, who since 2006 was on the FBI's list of most wanted terrorists. He was also wanted for the attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Kenya in 1998. They called it operation Celestial Balance: at least two AH-6 Little Bird helicopters deployed from one of two U.S. Navy vessels near Somalia's coast strafed a vehicle Nabhan was using to go back and forth between meetings. Intelligence operatives had been monitoring Sabhan prior to the attack. The helicopters passed once, firing on the vehicle, and then circled back around to retrieve the body so they could . . .

IN man denied ‘No Gods’ license plates though state offers ‘In God We Trust’ plates
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  9-8-2009    2
As I understand it, the separation of church and state sprang from the concept that the state cannot impose its belief on the individual. The federal government has been doing exactly this since 1864 when the first coin was stamped with “In God We Trust”. In 1956 it became the national motto (http://candst.tripod.com/motto.htm), and it is supported by nearly 90% of Americans, which led the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold the motto because, according to them, it has "lost through rote repetition any significant religious content”. Several years ago, the appearance of "In God We Trust" on our money was challenged in the federal courts. The challenge was rejected by the lower federal courts, and the Supreme Court of the United States declined to review the case. Since this message appears on U.S. currency, several states flags and seals, and license plates, many people falsely believe that the U.S. is, and was founded as, a Christian nation. I doubt you will convince them otherwise.

The latest on Rifqa Bary, from the Orlando Sentinel (Sept. 4, 2009)
enbar
by enbar  9-6-2009    2
It appears that the legal issues surrounding Rifqa Bary's situation are getting more and more complicated. The judge has so far been dealing only with procedural questions. For the time being, most of the relevant documents are sealed, the attorneys are under a gag order, and the seventeen-year-old Bary, who is insisting on staying in Florida (her parents want her to return home to Ohio), remains in foster care under the guardianship of the state of Florida. In my opinion, the child's lawyers have been making some very unscrupulous and inflammatory public statements, such as the claim that the parents' Columbus mosque is a "haven for Islamic terrorists" (law enforcement officials say there is no evidence for this). From the perspective of the parents, this is a matter of family law; for their opponents, it's about Christianity versus Islam.

cont: A number of offerings including scarabs, amber seals and earthenware were also found in the burial chamber which was two metres high. The town of Eleutherna is believed to have reached its peak in the Geometric Era around 3,000 years ago. Excavation in the last 25 years has so far yielded over 500 items of clay, metal and ivory including sculptures, tools and weapons. One of the most prized sculptures of the Louvre Museum in Paris, a limestone female statue called the Lady of Auxerre, is believed to have come from Eleutherna. -- AFP

New car: 230mpg - 100km/l (!) Wow!
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  8-12-2009
It's amazing to think such 10,000% increase in car efficiency is even possible. Hopefully, even better, this is just one example, a harbinger of things to come. If we put our collective minds, wills and spirit into it, humanity is capable of unthinkable great achievements and this is the best direction for us to travel. Unfortunately (to say the least), we kept getting fed war drums and saber rattling propaganda and led into false wars for false reasons. We don't need to travel down these hatefilled roads any longer. There are new ways, new possibilities.
