CongressNow: Sestak Seeks Bipartisan Approach to Ending War
merrie
by merrie  8-27-2008
He was an early and ardent backer of the presidential campaign of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and served on former President Bill Clinton’s National Security Council in the mid-1990s. Sestak has since backed Obama’s campaign, although he admits he’s not among Obama’s core group of national security advisers. Still, several Democratic lawmakers have suggested Sestak’s views carry weight among House Democrats. “When he speaks, he has the ear of everyone on the committee,” said Rep. Ellen Tauscher (Calif.), a senior Democrat on the Armed Services Committee. Rep. Jim Cooper (D-Tenn.), also a member of the committee, said Sestak has already emerged as as leader on military strategy. “He’s got the expertise. Democrats should welcome his experience.” Sestak said, “My belief is that those that have more recent experience and time in the military can help explain why certain polices” are needed, he said.

Death in the Waiting Room
Imnclady
by Imnclady  8-20-2008    1
The report said Sabock sat, unattended, in the room for four work shifts. The report also found that Sabock, formerly of Roanoke Rapids, ate nothing the day he died and had little food in the three days preceding his death. The 47-page report also said workers were supposed to be closely monitoring Sabock's condition and may have forged documents that said they had. A patient in New York died in June after she waited in a hospital's mental ward waiting area for nearly 24 hours. Security video showed her writhing on the floor. It was nearly an hour before someone else flagged down a staff member who got help for the unresponsive woman.

‘Kelo’ Property Rights Protections Gutted From Housing Bill
merrie
by merrie  8-6-2008    1
That 5-4 decision in 2005 allowed states and localities to use eminent domain for the benefit of private parties, so long the land confication served a “public purpose.” ome states have passed laws protecting property owners by barring eminent domain solely for economic development purposes. But for the many states that still allow this practice, the federal government is often the source of funds for the projects that result in the use of eminent domain. To their credit, the drafters of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008, which passed the Senate on July 11, at least recognized this danger of throwing billions in construction grants to state and local goverments. So they put in a clause stating, “No funds under this title may be used in conjunction with property taken by eminent domain, unless eminent domain is employed for a public use.”

US Intel: Iranian nuclear strike on U.S. ?
willhelm
by willhelm  7-30-2008    33
“The only explanation we can find is that Iranians are figuring out how to launch a missile from a ship and get it up to altitude and then detonate it,” “And that’s exactly what you would do if you had a nuclear weapon on a Scud or a Shahab-3, and you wanted to explode it over the US.” "If a crude nuclear weapon were detonated anywhere between 40 kilometers to 400 kilometers above the earth, in a split-second it would generate an electro-magnetic pulse that would cripple military and civilian communications, power, transportation, water, food, and other infrastructure" Asked how many Americans would die if Iran were to launch the EMP attack it appears to be preparing, Graham gave a chilling reply. “You have to go back into the 1800s to look at the size of population” that could survive in a nation deprived of mechanized agriculture, transportation, power, water, and communication. “70 to 90 percent of the population would not be sustainable after this kind of attack”.

Is Syrian President Assad Bluffing?
merrie
by merrie  7-29-2008    3
something his country has always refused since it considered that Lebanon is just a Syrian province. This was a huge condition for the French who see it a pledge given by Damascus to Lebanese sovereignty. Fifth, Syria has, according to Arab sources, made a big "summer housecleaning" by eliminating dozens of prisoners at the Sidnaya prison. Among them, two leaders of Jund al-Sham, the Islamist organization linked to Syrian services. Sixth, according to the Kuwaiti daily Al-Seyassah, Syria also asked Hamas leaders based in Damascus to leave the Syrian territory. The latter could move into the southern suburbs of Beirut, the Hezbollah stronghold. Seventh, Syria is allegedly trying to break up Hezbollah. Al-Seyassah believes that Syria has resumed its contacts with the former secretary general of Hezbollah and one of its co-founders, Sobhi Toufaili. Syria wants to strengthen Toufaili's faction to weaken Hassan Nasrallah and divide the party.

For Sale: High-Tech, Lethal Weapons From Blackwater, others
papananook
by papananook  7-28-2008
Some companies manufacture large-scale military equipment, like Blackwater’s GRIZZLY Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) - a 22-foot long (6.7 meters), 15-tonne heavily armored land vehicle able to transport up to 10 people and resist “projectiles up to .50 caliber and to provide an IED-survivable envelope.” Manufactured at Blackwater’s Moyock, North Carolina compound, the GRIZZL is equipped with a roof turret designed to mount a 12.7mm machine gun, a feature that is undoubtedly attractive to militaries possessing such a weapon. While the vast majority of the private military and security industry is made up of US and UK companies, there are explicit differences between the two. The GRIZZLY is symbolic of the US industry, often characterized by heavy-duty, lethal military equipment. The UK industry is in many ways softer, characterized by less lethal security technologies.

Don't ask, don't tell is a ridiculous, outdated policy that will likely be gone within a year. Most troops don't support it, and those who do are just going to have to deal with it. When the military was de-segregated, obviously there were racists that opposed that, too.

Support Of Obama Shaped By Ahmad Chalabi Advice
merrie
by merrie  7-22-2008
security decisions of Iraq's army to forward a Shiite confessional agenda. The role of Mr. Chalabi, whose party failed to gain any seats in the 2005 federal parliamentary elections, should be of interest to close watchers of the Bush administration. While Mr. Chalabi has clashed with both the American embassy and at times with Mr. Maliki, he nonetheless is still regarded among the Shiite political class as knowledgeable of American politics from his days lobbying for the Iraq Liberation Act in Washington. At the time, in the late 1990s, Senator McCain was one of Mr. Chalabi's biggest supporters. Mr. Brooke yesterday pointed out that Mr. Chalabi was appointed in 2007 by Mr. Maliki to chair a special committee aimed at restoring basic services to the citizens of Baghdad. "Maliki was number two in the Debaathification commission from the beginning when it was started in 2003. He has been in constant contact with Dr. Chalabi since that time," Mr. Brooke said.

Obama's Civilian National Security Force
sahara
by sahara  7-20-2008    5
How is it possible their candidate is seeking to create some kind of massive but secret national police force that will be even bigger than the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force put together? Now, maybe he was misquoted by the Congressional Quarterly and the Chicago Tribune. I guess it's possible. If so, you would think he would want to set the record straight. Maybe he misspoke. That has certainly happened before. Again, why wouldn't the rest of my colleagues show some curiosity about such a major and, frankly, bone-chilling proposition? Are we talking about creating a police state here? The U.S. Army alone has nearly 500,000 troops. That doesn't count reserves or National Guard. In 2007, the U.S. Defense budget was $439 billion. Is Obama serious about creating some kind of domestic security force bigger and more expensive than that? If not, why did he say it? What did he mean?

While it's tempting to see political interference here (Obama enjoys a big lead over McCain among Hispanics), the fact that this is California would make that stupid as all -- there's no way John McCain's taking that state. More likely, this is just another example of how idiotic, clumsy, and disrespectful of citizens' rights DHS is.
