POPSWhy is pleasure so suspicious? "The best sort of life, says Epicurus, is one that is free from pain in the body and from disturbance in the mind. That sounds a rather negative credo for a 21st-century devotee of the good life. Were he writing self-help books today, Epicurus would probably acknowledge that you can aim a little higher than that. He might point out in his own defence that health and peace are essential preconditions of happiness, and are easy to belittle if you are lucky enough to have them. But perhaps his most useful observation for the discerning hedonists of today, when such an intoxicating variety of gratifications are dangled before them, is a reminder of caveat emptor: "No pleasure is in itself evil, but the things which produce certain pleasures entail annoyances many times greater than the pleasures themselves."

POPSWhy the pursuit of happiness naturally includes melancholy "Obviously that opening is a bit hyperbolic for rhetorical effect. I will admit that. But it is, at the same time, a kind of expression of real danger. I think that being melancholy is an essential part of being a human being. I think to be a fully expressed human being you must be willing to delve into melancholy as much as into joy. If we try too hard to get rid of that melancholy it's almost like we're settling for a half-life."

POPSMessiah In Our Midst She proclaims her husband is the sort of leader who will fix our broken souls. Those of you who thought we had a Second Amendment to keep government from fixing your soul are so 20th century. Evolve already. When asked in an interview what sin is, Obama defined it as “Being out of alignment with my values.” Apparently, the editor failed to capitalize the “M” in “My.” “I am absolutely certain,” Obama proclaimed in his victory speech, “that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs for the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal. This was the moment — this was the time — when we came together to remake this great nation ...”

POPSFinally, it is all about you "Death Benefits is the latest entry to a new genre targeted at the "mid-life orphan," the titles of which telegraph a similar silver-lining sensibility: Losing Your Parents, Finding Yourself: The Defining Turning Point of Adult Life; Never the Same: Coming to Terms With the Death of a Parent; Nobody's Child Anymore; Midlife Orphan: Facing Life's Changes Now That Your Parents Are Gone; The Orphaned Adult: Understanding and Coping with Grief and Change after the Death of Our Parents. Despite this emerging market for adult-orphan self-help, Safer had trouble finding a publisher. The idea that children could benefit from parental death was seen as unseemly, she says. Some assumed "benefit" had to be financial. "I really had to fight for the title," she adds. "Death is a hard sell."

POPSOCD Help Part 2: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Self Help
Can people with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder cure themselves of their behavior? In this free podcast, radio counselor Roy Masters explores the possibility of overcoming all the effects of OCD. This is Part 2 in a podcast series on "OCD Help." Part 1 can be found at http://roymasters.blogspot.com. Chris has been dealing with OCD for over 10 years. Roy explains that obsessive compulsive behavior and thoughts are usually preceded by depression and guilt. OCD, in effect, is a form of psychological projection. While some people project their guilt onto other people, those suffering from OCD project guilt onto an idea that can then be obsessed over. By getting resentfully tied up with this idea or repetitive action, the obsessive compulsive mind is distracted away from the pain that guilt causes their conscience. Would you like to discover true self help, and be free of your obsessive compulsive thoughts for good? Listen to this podcast!

POPSEmotional Pollution and the Cult of Feelings <<<No matter how many self-help books and experts on talk shows insist that your feelings are "valid" and "appropriate," they cannot feel authentically like your own so long as they are mere reactions to someone else. If we allow the meaning of our lives to be subject to the vagaries of our reactions to the subtle emotional displays of others, we cannot help but fall into the present day quagmire of emotional pollution. To feel genuine and empowered, like a person of substance, folks need to know more than whether their emotions are "appropriate." They need to know what they mean about the self. The meaning of our emotions cannot lie in how they feel, but in what they tell us about the current fidelity to your deepest values.>>>
