POPS New York's Bravest Mourn Lost Brooklyn Firefighter A Brooklyn firehouse that lost five members on 9/11 is again mourning the loss of one of its own today, this one tragically killed while on vacation with his family. NY1’s Amanda Farinacci filed the following report. A flag hangs at half-staff and a bunting waved today outside the quarters of Ladder 111 Engine 214 in Bedford-Stuyvesant, days after 41-year-old firefighter Martin Simmons drowned trying to rescue his son while on vacation in Nevada. “Marty was what we call a premier firefighter in this company,” said firefighter Joe Honan. “He was almost one of the senior guys. He was a guy that took no trouble running things.”

POPSMcCain Response to 'Obama is Right' Well, there ya go then -- all that talk about Iraq being a '"sovereign nation" has been a bunch of horseshit. It's not the voters of Iraq who get to decide the future of that nation, but the voters of America. Team McCain admits to fighting a war of empire. This strikes me as an extremely bad attempt to spin their way out of an unspinnable situation. To quote an unnamed "prominent Republican strategist" Ambinder refers to in a previous post, " We're fucked ."

POPSWest Baghdad: Al Karkh Maternity Hospital To Open Doors
said Brig. Gen. Jeffery Dorko, Gulf Region Division commander. “Also, working with our Government of Iraq partners, we have constructed 113 of 132 new Primary Healthcare Centers that will treat 8,000 Iraqis each day. “The security situation has improved greatly,” said Atta. “It was very, very bad here for so long. So bad that I refused delivery of vital medical equipment until it was safe from those who would rob and steel from the hospital.” Dr. Atta was painfully aware of the poor security situation after one large delivery of expensive diagnostic equipment that included x-ray machines and other high-end medical equipment was hijacked. “We hope to open the hospital to inpatient care, surgeries and deliveries within two months,” said Dr. Emad Sabry, an anesthesiologist and one of Karkh’s ten senior physicians. “The hospital still needs additional equipment – all types, from beds to incubators and most importantly the pharmaceuticals."

POPSThe Obama Doctrine This is an article from The American Prospect that I found on del.icio.us, now that I've been frittering around with Clipmarks. The detail in the article belies the notion that Sen. Obama doesn't have a plan in mind should he take office on the now-familiar "Day One". Despite being an Obama supporter myself, I often wonder whether other supporters (and opponents, for that matter) are paying close attention. I mean, people DO realize that Obama is supporting an escalation of the conflict in Afghanistan, while at the same time reducing American forces in Iraq. Just a thought. Interesting article. Read the WHOLE thing.

POPS For Sale: West’s Deadly Nuclear Secrets A new whistleblower. On timesonline.co.uk, this is "Middle East" news. This probaby will hardly get a mention in the US. Read the whole article. the FBI was also gathering evidence against senior Pentagon officials – including household names – who were aiding foreign agents. ----- Following 9/11, a number of the foreign operatives were taken in for questioning by the FBI on suspicion that they knew about or somehow aided the attacks.“We need to get them out of the US because we can’t afford for them to spill the beans.” The official said that he would ‘take care of it’.” ----- Western government officials turned a blind eye to, or were even helping .... ----- She has given evidence to closed sessions of Congress and the 9/11 Commission, but many of the key points of her testimony have remained secret. ----- The US attorney-general has imposed a state secrets privilege order on her, which prevents her revealing more details....

POPSGender Ratios of Presidential Campaign Staffs Kevin Drum adds, “if you really want to see a testosterone imbalance, check out each candidate’s list of foreign policy advisors: a grand total of 7 women out of 148 advisers.” "And there’s no doubt, looking at those senior staff numbers, that Obama and Edwards both suck when it comes to hiring women into positions of power."
