Robot Therapy To 'Recharge' Stroke Victims' Arms
Fast T friend
by Fast T friend  7-17-2008
The other half are assigned to the robot group. This is less exciting than it sounds. The robot looks more like a garden-variety brace or splint that is strapped to the wrist, elbow or shoulder, depending on which joint is being used. A flat-screen computer monitor displays colorful dancing dots a la 1980s video games. Using a joystick, the patient is challenged to hit moving targets on the screen, using the stroke-weakened arm. If the patient cannot move the arm, the machine helps. If the machine senses any movement by the patient, it backs off, letting the injured arm do more of the work. Even if the patient at first cannot accomplish the task, the very act of thinking that the arm should move, then having it touch the correct target propelled by the robot, starts to restore or rebuild circuits in the brain, said Hermano Igo Krebs, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology-trained mechanical engineer who developed the device known as MIT-Manus.

Another Leftist Icon Comes to His Senses
willhelm
by willhelm  7-12-2008    14
This is a great article about the transformation of David Mamet from Liberal to Conservative. I do not know who David Mamet is but I find the story rather familiar in my own transformation and in the natural maturity of many as they gain wisdom and perspective. It gets frustrating at times seeing and hearing comments that are based on such lack of clarity. This is more evidence that the natural growth and transformation is toward a Libertarian stance founded in clear-mindedness, Conservative stance on constitutional intent, and Incrementalism as the wisest approach to societal advance in the face of fascist-progressivism.

Starbucks Closing Stores
pphilipp
by pphilipp  7-2-2008    2
Well, I for one am not surprised. Finally people have come to their senses. Don't get me wrong, I too love Starbucks but I've always wondered how they could be so successful by selling expensive coffee and very little else. I consider their brews to be a luxury which I can only occasionally afford to delve into. To me they don't sell a product or service which really competes with the already established businesses in the vicinity and when they open more than one store within a limited region, then they're only really competing with themselves. They're robbing business from Starbucks... not the McDonalds, Wendys or Dunkin Donuts next door. Now, if they can only sell a good cup of coffee at half the price and give free refills, then they've sold me. But hey, haven't I just described places which have been doing that for decades?

"The FutureFinder": Scientists Decode the Super Computer Inside Our Brains
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  6-9-2008
This pair of signals is incredibly useful data for any robotic limbs or other extras we might add to our limited human forms - whether they be replacements for carelessly lost parts, or entirely new structures. By working from the "goal" signal the mechanical parts can swiftly prepare to move in the desired manner, preparing any components needed and checking the path for hazards, before the "trajectory" signal gets to the fine details of movement.
