POPSFood of the Week: Apples Tips for preparing apples: Rinse apples under clear running water like you would any fruit. If organic, don't peel unless the recipe you have chosen requires peeled apples. To prevent browning when slicing apples for a recipe, simply put the slices in a bowl of cold water to which a spoonful of lemon juice has been added. For use in future recipes, sliced apples freeze well in plastic bags or containers.

POPSrecipe: pluot-amaretti trifle Mmm... love pluots. From the comments: When fresh fruit choices are more limited in the winter, I make orange/chocolate trifle with devil's food cake, cointreau, marmalade, orange slices and chocolate custard, and topped with cocoa whipped cream...always a big hit!

POPSBourbon bacon apple tarts Tarts: Unfold the puff pastry onto a lightly floured surface and roll the sheet out slightly. Using a 2-inch round biscuit cutter, cut out 24 rounds. Place the rounds on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Top with a baking rack to help keep the rounds uniform and even as they bake. Bake in the preheated oven until the rounds are golden brown, about 12 minutes. When done remove them from the oven and set aside to cool. In a medium bowl, add the diced apples and toss with the lemon juice. Add the cinnamon, maple syrup, 1/4 cup bourbon, butter, and brown sugar to the apples, and stir to combine. In a large skillet, heat the apple mixture over medium-low heat. Cook until the apples are tender and the liquid has thickened, about 10 to 12 minutes. Set aside to cool. Mix the 2 slices cooked and crumbled bacon into the apple filling.

He remarked that so far this year the Bronx Zoo has had a total of 917 visitors and that includes the three social workers who recently came in to give one of the older giraffes an enema. Muckenmuck said that just this morning he was told by one of his zoo employees that he had observed two of the kangaroos fighting over who would get to eat the empty food dish. As he looked out the window, he could clearly see one of the zoo vultures trying to put an otter between two slices of bread. Muckenmuck said that these are not pretty pictures and that is one of the reasons why a lot of the parents are keeping their kids away from the zoo. He lamented that it's sad to see all of these wonderful animals turning into cannibals. And the way things are going Muckenmuck says that he's af
