The key part mentioned is "peak hours." If we went with Al Gore's windmills and solar panels, we'd be facing blackouts and brownouts. We need more reliable electricity from nuclear power to do it.

At first you don't even notice they're solar," said Tony Fortenberry, who bought a home in Rockland, California, in September with solar panels manufactured by SunPower on its roof. "The tiles are completely integrated into the roof," Fortenberry said. "It has a more elegant appearance and it doesn't look like an add-on."

World 1st: Wave-powered Boat Completes Journey from Japan to Hawaii
papananook
by papananook  7-18-2008    2
This guy is my hero! Horie told reporters in Japan: "The sea was so calm, and the weather was so great throughout my journey. That's why it took me so long," Kenichi Horie said of his historic voyage. The vitals are that Kenichi left Honolulu March 16th, arrived in Wakayama, Japan last night (which by our calculation makes 110 days), and covered over 3,400 nautical miles via wave power. "When waves were weak, the boat slowed down. That's the problem to be solved." !n 1996 Ken-ichi Horie has already set a world record for the fastest crossing of the Pacific Ocean in a solar-powered boat, preceded three years earlier when he pedaled a boat for 4,660 miles from Hawaii to Okinawa, setting the world record for the longest distance traveled by a pedal-powered boat. Will "Th!nk" Ignite an Electronic Car Revolution in the U.S.?
Mohir
by Mohir  7-11-2008    1
Think City is one of two models that are out already, together with the Think Ox, with a choice of either lithium or a sodium battery, it's range is enough to take a suburban dweller to the downtown office and back, with zero carbon footprint. The car is thoughfully fully computerized and allows a key-less entry. It features real time navigation, web, e-mail and open source interfaces, intelligent and sustainable driving and route calculations. The DNA-key gives the user feedback on charging status and sends messages, for example, for pre-heat or pre-cool options via GPRS. Pricing has yet to be announced, but the company's current vehicles cost less than $25,000.

Solution to global warming: Floating cities
shandora
by shandora  7-4-2008
The 'Lilypad City' would float around the world as an independent and fully self-sustainable home. With a lake at its centre to collect and purify rainwater, it would be accessed by three separate marinas and feature artificial mountains to offer the inhabitants a change of scenery from the seascape. Power for the central accommodation hub is provided through a series of renewable energy sources including solar panels on the mountain sides, wind turbines and a power station to harness the energy of the waves.
