POPSWhy Americans Are Shunning Hollywood’s Wares
aside to make movies that embody traditional values, it often scores big with the public. Consider 2004’s Spider-Man 2, a sequel far better than the original. The movie is a fable about duty and heroism. The movie resonated powerfully with the public, grossing a whopping $374 million domestically, and it took in another $400 million or so overseas. Factor in DVD sales, and you’re getting close to a billion-dollar movie. The Incredibles affectionately embraces the bourgeois family, flaws and all. The Parrs have their difficulties: teenager Violet is sullen, the kids fight, Mom and Dad bicker, Bob hates his drab insurance job, but for the Parr kids, the family bond is all-important. Pixar’s 2003 runaway winner Finding Nemo, the movie shows children “what adults are supposed to do,” writes author Frederica Mathewes-Green on National Review Online—“to be brave and self-sacrificing, to defend children even at risk to themselves, to give, even in the face of ingratitude.”

POPS'Indiana Jones' graphics meant to go unnoticed Apparently they forgot the original's edge-of-your-seat intensity as well. Too bad. Wait for the video - you won't miss much. Spielberg, Ford, Lucas are too old for this sort of thing, it would seem... time to retire.

POPSHillary's a "Funny Girl" Why this is such news amazes me. Aside from the monetary rewards to Clinton and Obama I find it incredible that any credence whatsoever need be given to the backing of two private individuals. But that is the draw of celebrity in the US theses days.

POPSHollywood strike underlines bleak outlook for movie business Part of the bad news for the film industry came from a sharp decline in foreign DVD sales. Those dropped 15.5 percent in the period, while domestic DVD sales fell at half that rate. But the real killer was the growth in participations. Their precise amount is difficult to reckon, because deals vary and details are seldom disclosed publicly. But Global Media noted that at Disney - which is unusual in that its financial reports break out annual outlays for participations and residuals - the figure had grown at a compound annual rate of 37.6 percent for the last five years, to $554 million.
