POPSCeltic coin cache found continues: The Eburones "put up strong resistance to Caesar's journeys of conquest," Roymans said. The silver coins were made by tribes further to the north — possible evidence of cooperation against Caesar, he said. Both coin types have triple spirals on the front, a common Celtic symbol. The two other known caches of Eburones coins have been found in neighboring Belgium and Germany. Maastricht city spokeswoman Carla Wetzels said the value of the coins is not known — their worth is primarily historical. The Belgian cache of similar size was estimated at around 175,000 euros, or $220,000. The farmer who owned the land agreed to sell his interest to the city for an undisclosed sum. Curfs, a teacher at a nearby junior college, continues to own the 11 coins he found, but has lent them to the City of Maastricht on a long-term basis. The coins will go on display at the Centre Ceramique museum in Maastricht this weekend.

POPSAmerican Policy Elites Do Not Care About the Starving
World food prices grew 22% from June 2007 to June 2008 and a significant portion of the increase was propelled by the $175 billion invested in commodity futures that speculate on price instead of seeking to feed the hungry. The result is wild food price spirals, both up and down, with food insecurity remaining widespread. For a family on the bottom rung of poverty a small price increase is the difference between life and death, yet neither US presidential candidate has declared a war on starvation. Instead both candidates talk about national security and the continuation of the war on terror as if this were the primary election issue. Given that ten times as many innocent people died on 9/11/01 than those in the World Trade centers, where is the Manhattan project for global hunger? Where is the commitment to national security though unilateral starvation relief? Where is the outrage in the corporate media with pictures of dying children and an analysis of who benefits from hunger?

POPSRape an Epidemic in Coed Military 41 percent of women per one Veterans hospital! This is revealing of the moral character of the men deployed then, isn't it? Women also that enlist are truly naive, attracted to competing with men (as female recruiting ads highlight this aspect) and putting themselves in what is now a greater risk than fighting the enemy. A coed military was once controversial and this is one reason why, that was correct in its warnings. Women recruiting numbers now are falling as experience is a convincing teacher. Is the real Jessica Lynch here (gone wild) typical of enlisting females that want to 'join the guys'?

1. Preheat your oven to 350F. Boil and drain the noodles. You know how to do this. Toss with a teeny weeny bit of oil or margarine, if desired, to stop sticking. Save 1.5 cups of this water to add to the sauce, or put more water on to boil. 2. Melt the margarine in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the crushed garlic and cook for 2 minutes, if using. 3. Beat in the flour with a whisk, making a roux. Stir for one minute. Lower the heat if it bubbles too much. 4. Stir in the hot water, sea salt, shoyu or soy sauce, garlic powder if using, turmeric, pepper and any other spices you want (paprika, onion powder, chili powder, whatever). 5. Stir for another minute until the sauce starts to thicken. Whisk in the oil and the nutritional yeast. 6. Add at least half of the sauce to your cooked noodles and veggies, if using, in a lightly oiled casserle dish (I use a round 8''). Top with the rest of the sauce, the breadcrumbs, and/or paprika, if using and bake for 15-20 minutes, until

POPSZebra's Stripes, Butterfly's Wings: How Do Biological Patterns Emerge? Previous work identified a specific signal necessary for getting these fly egg cells to move; the problem is that this signal is “graded.” Like drops of ink spreading out on wet paper, this signal travels in between surrounding cells, gradually fading away as it moves outwards. But clear lines are required for pattern formation — there is no grey area between a zebra’s black and white stripes, between heart and liver cells and, in this case, between migrating cells and those that stay put. How are graded signals converted to a clear move or stay signal? By examining flies containing mutations in different genes, the researchers discovered that one gene in particular, called apontic, is important for converting a graded signal.

POPSCampaign To Lower Our Gasoline Prices As gas prices continue to increase, Congress continues to blame others while ignoring practical steps to stop the pain Americans are feeling at the pump. To lower gasoline prices and reduce our dependence on foreign oil, we need real solutions to our energy challenges. Laws and policies that restrict access to America’s abundant energy drive up the price of fuel and electricity. They cause widespread layoffs and leave workers and families struggling to survive, as the cost of everything they eat, drive, wear and do spirals higher.

POPSPlease Sign: Drill Here, Drill Now Petition Background Just the facts... The average price for a gallon of gas is now $3.72, this is $.61 higher than a year ago. The U.S. Congress has acted, but in the wrong direction. Last week, the Senate voted narrowly against reversing a moratorium on oil-shale development. Federal officials and industry experts estimate that up to 1.8 trillion barrels of oil is trapped in the region's oil shale, or three times the proven reserves of Saudi Arabia. Laws and policies that restrict access to America’s abundant energy drive up the price of fuel and electricity. They cause widespread layoffs and leave workers and families struggling to survive, as the cost of everything they eat, drive, wear and do spirals higher. http://www.americansolutions.com/actioncenter/petitions/?Guid=54ec6e43-75a8-445b-aa7b-346a1e096659

POPSDalai Lama Appeals For Calm In Tibet The Dalai Lama may be able to control his own hatred. But he can't control that of his followers "Of course I am angry, when I see my people get hurt," a Tibetan monk in Kumbum in Qinghai, China, told a television network. Over the weekend monks at the Kumbum monestary held demonstrations in the streets. Since then, though, the Chinese military has surrounded the monastery, and the monks haven't dared repeat their protests. "People are not treated equally in this country," the monk said. Chinese see the protestors as the criminals. Recognizing the possibility that things may get out of control, the Dalai Lama reiterated a stance he took during the last mass protests in Tibet in the late 1980s: that he step down as head of the government in exile if his followers abandoned his non-violent philosophy.

POPSTribalism, Violence and Poverty The suggestion is that people being ruthlessly exploited by an appeal to their traditional loyalties will, in times of confusion and suffering, shelter first in their family, then in their 'tribe'.
