Taser Creates Peel-and-Stick Electrified Film
Andy Greenberg
by Andy Greenberg  5-13-2008
Taser International is still thinking of new ways to paralyze people, this time with an adaptable stick on surface for any device. From a PR perspective, the company can always argue that these semi-brutal devices are just innovative ways to avoid lethal force.

Battle Of the Proxy Incumbents
merrie
by merrie  5-11-2008
Fiction can be fun! Ultimately though, this fanciful bit of twaddle is unlikely to stick, what with McCain's voting record so thoroughly refuting it. And in a lot of ways, that's too bad. If only we could look back at McCain's votes and comments on the wildly effective investment income tax cuts and find a man who embraced pro-growth fiscal policy as eagerly as Bush, we might be better assured of the continuity of certain beneficial policies that Obama so laments.

Obama NC & IN wins show broad demographic support
masbury
by masbury  5-7-2008
Check this sampler of demographic wins: Clinton's depiction of his support as narrow is just a last-chance mudball she's trying to stick on him. Ironically, she won among the "elites" - -those making over $100k -- in IN. Things aren't as they seem.

Spyware Removal - a halfway decent article?
royjohnson
by royjohnson  5-7-2008
Found an article on EzineArticles (well buried under the usual slime), so I'm posting the Squidoo page instead. The thing that's interesting is it's not the usual article crap - you know - "To avoid a sore throat, be sure not to gargle with chainsaws". In other words, advice that anyone who doesn't move via the use of pseudopods couldn't figure out for themselves. The guy does have a clue (although he could have gone into more detail). Putting the software on CD or a USB stick (for emergencies) would be a good idea. Hopefully, he'll get round to putting up part two of the guide before too long... it seems part one has been up for a while. Otherwise, I might have to cobble a guide together... for removing spyware using free or low-cost software. Would anyone be interested in that?

Now spread this over the dessert. Then you are gonna take your pudding and milk mix or beat this for about 4 minutes or so. After that place this mixture on top of the dessert. Garnish with coconut, more almonds and place in the refrigerator. Let this chill for about a hour or so. Then take it out and drizzle chocolate syrup on top, more cool whip and a fresh strawberry if desired.

The YANKS Deserved THANKS.
righthand
by righthand  5-1-2008    4
A prosperous Ireland provides the model of how peace should be done without invasion or regime change. What worked. Essentially your stick was bigger than the UK stick. Clinton's assertion that Northern Ireland could no longer be treated as internal only and so achieved justice and civil right for ALL in the North and not just the privileged that controlled the apartheid statelet. We Irish don't do bullshit. Those words of out PM were meant, truly. Thanks America on behalf of the 40 million Irish-Americans and the millions back here.

It wasn't Affirmative Action that bumped your kid's college acceptance
masbury

Yet another way the rich stick it to us while we blame the poor: Twice as many as assisted nonwhite admissions are rich white kids with connections. Only 40% of financial aid goes to students with financial need. ... many get into exclusive colleges the same way people get into trendy night clubs, by knowing the management or flashing cash at the person manning the velvet rope

I am not sure I can make it to the ALA Conference this year. I know! What kind of librarian do I think I am? Well, obviously, I'm trying to be great but I also have 2 other conferences this summer which means my head might explode. The Shifted Librarian posted a link to this so I thought I would Clipmark it and share it with all of you lovely people. Enjoy!

Raindrops on roses
Aribeth
by Aribeth  4-26-2008    2
The team tried to replicate the effect. They put some polyvinyl alcohol onto rose petals and allowed it to set, then peeled off a thin plastic cast of the petal surface. This film had the same properties as the rose petal:the film could hold droplets of between 3-5 microlitres even when held upside down. It seems that the physical shape of the surface is much more important than any chemical properties of the material in creating 'stickiness',says Ronald Fearing, a biomimetic engineer at the University of California at Berkeley. For a rose, this stickiness might come in handy as reflective water drops that glisten in the Sun might attract pollinating insects. In the lab, such materials might be useful for 'lab on a chip' devices that need to hold and shunt around tiny quantities of liquid without leaking or being contaminated by nearby materials. "These findings present many interesting applications in microfluid handling," says Fearing.
