POPSThe Top 100 Movie Films Another film list? The same old Citizen Kane? No - this one’s different Now find a film... So, you’ve scoured The Times Top 100 Films of All Time and have realised, with rising panic, that you’ve seen only five of them. You think Festen is a nasty infection of the toenail and that Deliverance is a posh pizza company. You like Duck Soup, but only in a Chinese restaurant. You’re a cinema dunce! But don’t worry, brushing up on our movie canon needn’t be hard work—after all, the films listed are pretty much guaranteed to have at least some artistic merit, and how often can you say that in the cinema these days?

POPSDenzel Washington tells NY kids science is important Denzel and his wife Pauletta have been awarding neuroscience research scholarships to college students, and he was talking to high school kids at Mt Vernon, his home town. His main message was that it may be great to be famous, but if you want to do something more important, learn about sciences, and the opportunities available, where there can be a field that is both interesting, and where they could make a difference.

POPSThe Nun With a Switchblade
"On January 18 of that year, prior to their appearance on stage at President Lyndon B. Johnson's Inaugural Gala, Julie Andrews and Carol Burnett were observed kissing passionately in public in a Washington hotel. The clinch, which both women later claimed was a stunt staged to amuse their friend, actor and movie director Mike Nichols, was witnessed by the President's wife, Lady Bird Johnson, who unexpectedly stepped out of the hotel elevator at that moment. This incident, sadly, is missing from Dame Julie's new book, in which she says of her chum Carol, "'I loved all that she was, all that she exuded - we bonded instantly," adding: "I lost my own inhibitions and felt free beside her." OMG!! Doesn't sound like a "stage stunt" to me. And I'll tell you what. My gaydar is pretty darn good and something about Ms. Burnette screams out BISEXUAL to me. But what a life Ms. Andrews has had eh? So different from her carefully planned public persona. No one can know our struggles.

POPS"Will these guys catch you?", "Sure Honey, they're kids" More: "At 82 she was cartwheeling across the stage and being tossed from the arms of a 60-year-old male dancer to another who was 70," Le Maire recalled of her mother. "I said, 'Mom, are you sure these guys are going to catch you?' She said, 'Sure, honey. They're kids.' "

POPSHow Do You Psyche Yourself? Up? Or Out? The moral of the story? No matter how high you jump, how fast you run or swim, how powerfully you row, you can do better. But sometimes your mind gets in the way. “All maximum performances are actually pseudo-maximum performances,” Dr. Morgan said. “You are always capable of doing more than you are doing.” From an article on how athletes trick their brains into letting them achieve what their bodies are capable of. I think this anecdote perfectly encapsulates what makes pushing one's personal boundaries so maddening yet rewarding. If I had more time, I would come up with some witty, insightful comments right about here, but I'm afraid I need to run (for work, unfortunately, not for pleasure). Anyone else have some thoughts? :)

POPSClipette and The Box We just returned from seeing clipette in her acting debut. Well, it was a debut at least for me. I have to admit, I am not in the least a play person. I've been to two plays in my entire life and didn't like either and have never been back. My main reason for going was to support Adam and Clipette. To top it off, I didn't feel well but made the trek in anyway. I was a little nervous when I saw the size of the theatre and stage thinking, "If I go to another bad play that will be it, I'll be scared for life." The wife being a lover of the theatre agreed and was afraid for me as well. We were afraid my sitting through an hour of being bored would topple me into an ever lasting theatre trauma. Well... after sitting through it I can only say one thing... (continued)
