A roar from the past :)
balthazarus
by balthazarus  7-14-2008
Each Parasaurolophus probably had a voice that was distinctive enough not only to distinguish it from other dinosaurs, but from other Parasaurolophuses. The sound may have been somewhat birdlike, and they may have made songs of some sort to call to one another.

Room temperature superconductivity: One step closer to the Holy Grail of physics
Mohir
by Mohir  7-9-2008
The researchers have discovered where the charge 'hole' carriers that play a significant role in the superconductivity originate within the electronic structure of copper-oxide superconductors. These findings are particularly important for the next step of deciphering the glue that binds the holes together and determining what enables them to superconduct.

Congress Blinds The FBI
merrie
by merrie  7-1-2008
These predictive models get better as the quality of the information going into them improves. As more terrorists are captured and interrogated, and their computers and data is translated, the predictions become more accurate. No one harasses researchers for using data mining, or makes fun of building supercomputers with graphics processors (often the same ones found in video game consoles, making super-fast computers cheap enough to be used in a combat zone to make life saving predictions), when it saves troops from getting killed. The FBI has been unable to make this point to Congress, mainly because some key legislators are ideologically opposed to data mining, and refuse to acknowledge the widespread success of the technique in civilians and military sectors.

How power-hungry are the Top500 supercomputers?
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  6-18-2008
But what might have surprised the authors of the list the most is that 301 of the 500 supercomputers on last November's list are nowhere to be seen. After seven months, they're simply not powerful enough to make the list. :-)

On This Day 10 Years Ago, Chess Champion Defeated By Supercomputer
merrie
by merrie  5-11-2008
WN: Kasparov's request for a rematch was turned down. Why do you think that was? It looked like IBM had got good publicity but took the ball away and didn't want to play anymore. Campbell: I believe we had accomplished what we were trying to do for so many years and it was time to move on to other problems. Garry Kasparov has now retired from chess and Deep Blue is in a museum so that's not going to happen, but matches between other computers and the current world champion have taken place as recently as last year.

Donate Your CPU To Fighting AIDS

One Computer Could Run Entire Internet
Andy Greenberg
by Andy Greenberg  2-6-2008    1
Hard to imagine how this is possible, and it seems counterintuitive to think of the Internet as a single computer. But it fits with the strange trend that's underway: After becoming more and more distributed, computing is again becoming more and more centralized, with thin, simple nodes at the edge and massive hardware at the core.

Iran Reports MidEasts's Most Powerful Supercomputer
handleriii

The supercomputer will be used for "WEATHER PURPOSES". Uh-huh. Sure it will - despite US sanctions against having a supercomputer capable of of conducting calculations faster than 190 billion operations per second. And according to international trade regulations, supercomputers performing over 190 billion operations per second are considered strategic equipment and their sale is subject to sanctions. A VERY "STRATEGIC" WEATHER MACHINE INDEED!

Cray and DRC may have a pretty cool thing here. An SMP AMD system with one of these modules to move an FPGA from down on the PCI bus right onto HyperTransport. Cray/DRC are not the first to think of this move, but this might be the best implementation I've heard of so far.
