Turning to Washington for help to save the declining news business says much about the mentality of mainstream journalism leaders, an attitude that we and the government are on the same side. This is the mentality that led to the news establishment’s acceptance of the Iraq War. Once you allow the government or private corporation to have any controlling link to the media you lose independence. Editors become fearful of criticizing the hand that feeds it. Publishers and benefactors become cozy and unbiased reports become fewer and fewer. Journalism becomes a de facto advertisement for consumer products. We hope in the future we’ll see more I.F. Stones, more guerrilla warriors on the Web, in print and on the air. Because of them—and not because of a government handout—great reporting will survive, as it always has.

POPSSenate Panel Foils Public Preview of Health Bill Moreover, two Democrats, Sens. Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia and Charles Schumer of New York, are seeking to add a public insurance option to the bill. Such a plan is favored by many liberals but was substituted with nonprofit insurance cooperatives in the bill. The committee opened its second day of work on the bill after a clash over costs on Tuesday. Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa and other Republicans want to change the bill's mandate for individuals to have health insurance, which they say would be a burden on some people. Baucus altered parts of the bill on Tuesday in a bid to gain support from both sides. Key changes included cutting the maximum penalty for families that don't get health insurance, to $1,900 from $3,800 a year. Health-care economist Len Nichols of the New America Foundation said he thinks Snowe's trigger amendment may help get some other Republicans on board with the broader bill. But at least one Republican leader criticized the idea.

The Bush tax cuts were deficit-financed, which increased the national debt and resulted in greater interest payments on that debt, as already explained. These figures make clear that costs cannot be the real concern of lawmakers who oppose the House health care legislation and yet supported the Bush tax cuts. Their position seems to be that showering benefits on the wealthiest five percent of taxpayers and leaving the bill for future generations is preferable to making health care available for all at a much lower cost and paying that cost up front. That demonstrates a different set of priorities than most Americans have, but it doesn’t demonstrate much concern about costs.
