Laws of Nature, Source Unknown
wildcat
by wildcat  12-19-2007    8
The ultimate Platonist these days is Max Tegmark, a cosmologist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In talks and papers recently he has speculated that mathematics does not describe the universe — it is the universe. Dr. Tegmark maintains that we are part of a mathematical structure, albeit one gorgeously more complicated than a hexagon, a multiplication table or even the multidimensional symmetries that describe modern particle physics. “Everything in our world is purely mathematical — including you,” he wrote in New Scientist.

Human Knowledge-Foundations and Limits-Brian Holtz
pokkets
by pokkets  8-25-2007
There are many more questions discussed, but there was enough room to provide some examples. He is asking the kinds of questions, that while profound, must be considered as answerable if we are to understand where we stand in the universe, and where we have the ability to go.

archimedes found!
reidenschneider
by reidenschneider  8-3-2007    3
these same techniques are enabling scholars to decipher some of the multitude of scraps of papyrus fragment that fill drawers of their museums. One such, a 1,500-year-old bit of papyrus written in Greek, the original language of the New Testament, contains a key passage from the Book of Revelation that is causing consternation... the “Number of the Beast,” or the sign of the anti-Christ whose coming is predicted in the book’s apocalyptic verses. Most versions of this section of the Bible give it as 666, but it is shown in this text – which pre-dates the other texts by at least a century – as 616. taken in part from james randi.

Math as a Civil Right
Kore7
by Kore7  7-21-2007
The ubiquity of computers makes abstract, quantitative reasoning skills critical to a wide range of job opportunities. "Information age technology put math on the table as a literacy requirement in the same way that industrialism made reading literacy a requirement," says Moses. For that reason, he says, the country needs to raise math education standards for all students.
