POPSDon't blame deregulation Indeed, exactly contrary to Obama’s claims, the repeal of Glass-Steagall has helped to counter the current crisis. It allowed Bank of America to buy out Merrill Lynch, JP Morgan Chase to buy out Bear Stearns, and Barclays Bank to work on buying up the remains of Lehman Brothers. It allowed investment banks Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley to take up refuge as bank holding companies. If investment banks Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers had diversified more into commercial banking, taking commercial deposits — as the Act’s repeal made possible — that might have provided them with the superior capital cushions needed to survive.

POPSMaster Debaters B.O. and JMac go at it again tonight. I’d enjoy it in HD on WRTV, if I probably wasn’t going to be asleep already. Tonight’s Designated Old Media/Old News Guy Host is Bob Schieffer. I was able to unearth a candid shot of Tom Brokaw getting ready for his performance in the last debate.

POPSBig Surprise (not!): Harper Lied Hopefully, this will continue the decline of the Conservatives in the polls before the election on the 14th, and maybe we can get a party with at least a small measure of sense back in control of Canada. The Liberals may suck hugely, but they're arms and elbows above the Conservatives.

POPSA Brief History of the Twenty-first Century This seems plausible enough. Oct. 2, 2051 is an intriguing point, but misses the key strategy that one could hold all of North America by only defending Alaska, Greenland and Mexico. After holding this for a short while you could take all of South America, swapping Mexico for Brazil as your only souther border. At this point, world domination is only a matter of time.

POPSU.S.Treasury's Kashkari to Lead Bank Bailout Office (Update1) ``We need to think through what's the best for securities, for loans, to help strengthen the balance sheet of the institutions.'' Anthony Ryan, the Treasury's acting undersecretary for domestic finance, said in an interview today on CNBC. ``We are focusing on the broader issues, the mortgage- related assets.'' Senate confirmation is required to fill the position for which Kashkari will be nominated. The Treasury hasn't specified the length of Kashkari's tenure, or whether the White House would nominate him officially. The Bush administration remains in office until January. POPSTom Starkel, Missing 30 Years I've been sifting through google, looking for whatever information I can find about Tom. One thing that has me a bit puzzled is the fact that Tom disappeared without a trace, and someone else was found driving his vehicle. (arrested then later released due to lack of evidence) YET when I view .state.ca.us/ Tom is listed as a Voluntary Missing Adult? Missing Person

POPSObama Campaign Ignoring NBC Cease-and-Desist UPDATE NBC blasts clip as 'outrageous' and demands Obama camp cease running it altogether "We have engaged the Obama campaign on the legal front and demanded that they stop using the ad," Gollust says. "To date they have not complied. Their response was to put a tagline at the end of the ad. However, that is not good enough, and we continue to demand they cease and desist using this outrageous ad." The tagline reads "NBC and MSNBC did not cooperate in the making of this video" and flashes for three seconds at the end of the ad. The spot has been seen more than 566,000 times, and features the image of Tom Brokaw and voice of Keith Olbermann announcing a mock victory for Sen. John McCain. http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/nbc/obama_campaign_ignoring_nbc_ceaseanddesist_96105.asp?c=rss
