POPSObama In Knots Over Cheney ----a vote that could be viewed as endearing if he hadn't more recently flipped on it as well. And as the Hot Air link provided by the inestimable Jim Geraghty at Campaign Spot notes, Obama explained in a Las Vegas TV interview this week that his vote on that bill was motivated by the fact that "this was the largest investment in alternative energy in history." So which is it Senator? Is Obama's complaint about the NEPDG merely grousing about process (a process complaint that led to wasteful federal litigation in which the Vice President ultimately prevailed)? Or is Obama-wan Kenobi playing gutter political games, trying to tar McCain with guilt by association with Cheney? (An association that isn't particularly supported by the record and with which, by the way, I would be more than happy to be "tarred.") Either way, it doesn't jibe with his "the One" narrative.

POPSWoman Challenges Putin and Saves World's Oldest & Deepest Lake
Environmental activism is growing increasingly hazardous in Putin's Russia. With growing limitations on freedom of speech in Russia, if you oppose a state company, you can expect to come to the attention of the state security services. But Rikhvanova, a biologist and veteran environmental crusader, was devoted to saving Lake Baikal, she won even Putin's ear after organizing protests, petitions and flash mobs. (Last year her adult son Pavel was one of 20 people arrested after an attack on her group's environmental encampment). Baikal, also known as the "Blue Eye of Siberia", is the world's oldest and deepest -- and largest -- freshwater lake, home to more than 1,700 species of plants and animals, two thirds of which can be found nowhere else in the world. Rikhvanova is now organizing to block the expansion of a state-run uranium enrichment facility at Angarsk, just 50 miles from Lake Baikal, where the Russian government is planning to import nuclear waste from around the world

POPSBlogilitics: Now Malaysians say blogs influence elections
Before the humiliation of the General Elections in Malaysia last month the Badawi Government was stridently insisting that bloggers were only engaged in masturbation and were not influencing anyone. Now ministers, ex ministers and all and sundry are embracing the new conventional wisdom that blogs are influential in politics. The irony of it all is that the power of the Malaysian bloggers are actually the creation of the Malaysian Government - if it was not so obsessed with controlling the mainstream media to the extent that it lost all credibility, Malaysians would still be happy trusting their newspaper, TV and radio stations instead of the blogs. So what now for the Malaysian Government. If Unspun was Machiavelli and advising the ABB Government he would tell them to free up the Malaysian media. if they can control it make sure that the enditors they put in place are good, professional and share the same vision as the government (assuming its got one). Once this is don

POPSUK MP: USA Executions INHUMANE "I think the State has a right to exact retribution and in the worst cases that means paying with a life," he says today. "I still do believe in it – I switched my position because of several miscarriages of justice, not because of any change of heart. "However, I feel very strongly that if the State is going to kill someone, it should do it in a way that is as unlike murder as possible. It should be painless. "There's not an animal from a beetle to an elephant that you can kill without a series of protocols worked out scientifically to make sure the creature does not suffer. "Yet when it comes to capital punishment, we are far less concerned about whether it is humane or not. "I wanted to discover whether the science of killing offered an alternative." That is why Portillo, who has carved out a respected TV career for himself since leaving politics, finds himself at the grandly titled Centre for Man and Aviation in Soesterberg, Netherlands."

POPSEU: "based on partnership, prosperity and peace"
" As part of the European Youth Parliament 56th international session in Ireland this week, young people from 30 countries have been debating issues including global warming, migration, healthcare and trade. Participants discussed policy approaches before proposing resolutions to the general assembly. A resolution on EU reform recommended raising public awareness of the Reform Treaty followed by referendums in all member states in order to increase democratic legitimacy. It also suggested the introduction of EU citizenship classes in member states and called for pan-European TV news programmes. On the question of how the EU could meet its growing energy needs while ensuring reduced carbon emissions, participants called on member states to switch from dependence on fossil fuels to alternative energy sources in transport, industry and the household. They also called for the Union to promote a more flexible energy market and consider the use of nuclear technologies as a viable

POPSHello All You Godless Infidels And Happy Heathens Gaylor said this to start her show, Hello all you godless infidels, out-of-the-closet atheists and happy heathens. You can turn on the radio or TV 24/7 to be preached at. This is one hour a week of the public airwaves that offers an alternative. This program is an antidote to the domination of public airwaves by the religious right. Your humble correspondent eagerly await the nauseating and hypocritical outcry from Fox Noise and the religious right in this country which is sure to come. For to them, freedom of religion has never meant freedom from religion and certainly not from our own brand of home-grown Christianity which more and more Americans are viewing as blatantly hypocritical, judgmental and overbearing.

POPSArtists' secret shopping mall pad Eight artists lived a dream life, hidden away at a mall in a small room. How often we all think of running away and hiding out in a mall? Well, these artists came as close as it gets to living without an address while enjoying the comforts of a home away from home. We often see people living on the sidewalk, or in derelict buildings. Well, by going one step further, the artists modified their street life experience by adding the comforts of a home without the responsibilities of renting or owning a home. It certainly adds to the saying of 'living like a starving artist.'

POPSRussian FM says U.S. wants Czech radar to spy on Russia Following the U.S. delegation's visit to Azerbaijan, deputy director of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA), Brigadier General Patrick O'Reilly, said the U.S. was studying the radar's parameters, and would analyze them later. However, MDA director, Air Force Lt. Gen. Henry Obering III, said on Tuesday that the Gabala radar may only be used as an integral part of U.S. missile defenses in Europe, and could not serve as an alternative to the European shield. The Russian foreign minister reiterated that Russia continued to regard the placement of a U.S. missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic as a threat to its national security and Moscow had been preparing an adequate response to Washington's move. "We see a threat and we are preparing a response to it," he said.

POPSNets turn abroad as Strike Looms Looking abroad for ready-made hits has never been a popular choice for the broadcast nets -- but desperate times could call for desperate measures. And while hardly ideal, at least they're looking beyond the "ALL reality, ALL of the time" alternative.
