POPSEndangered Bird Becomes Internet Sensation: Sirocco the Kakapo Hits the Big Time Sirocco was featured in a recent BBC series entitled "Last Chance To See," profiling some of the thousands of species of animals in the world that are threatened with extinction, mostly due to human incursion and our effects on wild habitat. A report last summer by the International Union for Conservation of Nature asserts that "nearly one third of amphibians, more than one in eight birds and nearly a quarter of mammals are threatened with extinction." As the Kakapo Conservation website reminds us, "6 billion people on earth; only 124 kakapo." Not a good ratio, and one repeated thousands of times over, around the world. Sirocco is named for a warm Mediterranean wind. Let's hope he wafts into human conscience with a renewed sense of wonder for the amazing and gorgeous creatures on this planet, and a reminder of our responsibility for them.

POPSDoes Yahoo think we're a bunch of stupid dogs? When i saw this image on Yahoo's soon to be released "twitter-killer" page, i immediately imagined a conversation inside Yahoo that went something like this: Yahoo exec: why the image of a bunch of dumb dogs? Yahoo marketing person: "well, twitter has a bird so we figured we'd have a few dogs." Yahoo exec: brilliant!

POPSWE ARE ALL WRITERS NOW "True, much of what is written online is quotidian, informational, ephemeral. But writing has always been so: traditional newspapers line bird-cages a day later; lab reports describe methodology in tedious detail; the founding fathers wrote what they ate for lunch. And the quality of many blogs is high, indistinguishable in eloquence and intellect from many traditionally published works." an important read

POPSTwitter: Part of NBA Draft History? The NBA entry draft has come a long way. When the NBA decided to hold the first draft lottery in 1985 the league was entering the height of what many consider its golden era with Magic, Bird, Dr. J, and of course MJ. I mostly remember the look on Dave DeBusschere's face when he realized the Knicks had won the lottery - the right to select Patrick Ewing. But, I think what stood out more was the broadcast, it literally looked like your local station's nightly "pick 6" studio remote...ping pong balls and all. That's it. So much interest and simply no chance for average fans to be part of the action. Fast forward to tonight. Now, you can interact with other fans, current and former NBA players, and even celebrities in real-time on Twitter...now thats what I call access.

POPSTwitter message could be cyber criminal at work Many people ask me why i don't want a lot of followers on twitter or follow a lot. Well among the reasons this is one one them in article. and number 2 is unless only going to sit at computer watching pop up tweets from those your following what good is it to be distracted every 2 seconds from the pages your reading on the internet. Same as social network sites, what good is it to have 2 gazilliion friends whom you could never possibly have time to get back to or interact with having so many. Yep call me a nut but i prefer a chosen few. Those i take interest in. Whose tweets are interesting. Not blabber mouths tweeting like a starving bird every 3 seconds. And specialty tweeters like download.com or feedmecheesy.com where i am notified of new content. I guess it's suppose to look impressive if you have lots and lots of followers. I look at them quite the opposite way..Like the old high school snobs yelling oh look at me, look at me....

POPS Sylvester Still Harassing Tweety Bird Twitter — the messaging service with which users send each other “tweets” — was hit by a series of worm attacks over the weekend and early today. According to a story in Computerworld, “Twitter again emphasized that while the worm attacks have been a nuisance, they haven’t stolen any user account information.” But sounds like it was a long weekend worthy of Looney Tunes. (Apologies to Bob Clampett and Warner Brothers) UPDATE: According to the BBC, “Twitter has been given the all clear after a worm infected ‘tens of thousands of users’. But experts say the attack could have been much worse.”
