The announcement was the latest illustration of how the market turmoil was rapidly changing the regulatory landscape. In the coming months, Congress will consider overhauls to the regulatory structure, but the markets and the regulators are already transforming it in response to events.

What Happened To $100,000 Garden Money, Now Oasis of Weeds
merrie
by merrie  9-25-2008    2
Obama vowed to "work tirelessly" to raise $1.1 million to help Smith's organization turn the City of Chicago-owned lot into an oasis of trees and paths. But Obama lost the congressional race, no more money was raised, and today the garden site is a mess of weeds, chunks of concrete and garbage. The only noticeable improvement is a gazebo. In a previous interview, Smith said the state grant money was legitimately spent, mostly on underground site preparation. But no one ever took out construction permits required for such work, city records show. And a contractor who Smith said did most of the work told a reporter all he did was cut down trees and grade the site with a Bobcat. Citing the garden's failure to take root, NeighborSpace -- an umbrella group for dozens of community gardens citywide -- moved Sept. 9 to return the site to the city. Its action followed a July 11 Sun-Times report on the grant.

The Return of Tent Cities to America
DanaGarrett
by DanaGarrett  9-18-2008
From the news article: early 61 percent of local and state homeless coalitions say they've experienced a rise in homelessness since the foreclosure crisis began in 2007, according to a report by the National Coalition for the Homeless. The group says the problem has worsened since the report's release in April, with foreclosures mounting, gas and food prices rising and the job market tightening. "It's clear that poverty and homelessness have increased," said Michael Stoops, acting executive director of the coalition. "The economy is in chaos, we're in an unofficial recession and Americans are worried, from the homeless to the middle class, about their future." The phenomenon of encampments has caught advocacy groups somewhat by surprise, largely because of how quickly they have sprung up. "What you're seeing is encampments that I haven't seen since the 80s," said Paul Boden, executive director of the Western Regional Advocacy Project, an umbrella group for homeless advocacy

First off, I didn't know there were umbrellas worth $5000 to buy; much less lend to someone. Secondly, why would I let anyone borrow anything of mine worth $5000? I don't think so.

Some people might be more inclined to one search mode or the other, having a lesser ability to focus on a given task or difficulty letting go of an idea. An extreme form of the exploratory cognitive style would be someone with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. An extreme form of the exploitive cognitive style would be someone with obsessive compulsive disorder.

To Follow God's Will?
debbyski
by debbyski  9-6-2008    3
I think all this nonsense really hurts the message of a religious revolutionary who brought transformation and wisdom, not doctrine. There is a wise way and a foolish way; a broad way and a narrow one. Do people really think that one can "pray away gay?" It's so convenient to believe if one's orientation is heterosexual I suppose. Oh well, back to the every day business of the dead burying their own dead.

Rechargeable 24-LED Umbrella Light
seosharp
by seosharp  8-11-2008
This very modern looking silver colored light is composed of 24 clear and bright LEDs that can shine light at exactly where you need the light. When it is installed facing up, the light diffuses and instead of a concentrated bright spot, as is the case when facing down, the whole area is relatively bright and warm.
