POPSWhat Americans owe to those who serve "Each November we are asked to pause and honor them, which is, or should be, an honor in itself. After the events of the last week at Fort Hood in Texas, with their reminder of the sacrifices that the men and women of the military make for us, Veterans Day will hold special meaning this year."

POPS“Apocalypse: The Second World War” ~ Veterans Day November 11, 2009 remember the guys who have been fighting them in the sand, fighting them in the dust, fighting them in the mountains, and now fight on in the hospital wards. The Valour IT push is on, to give laptops to wounded servicemen. At the invitation of Cassandra at Villainous Company, whose Marine husband is forward deployed in Afghanistan, we’re with Team Marines this year. Pushing the Marines ahead is just the fun part of the drive. It all goes to everyone in all branches. Give as you can. Donate via Team Marines Apropos of all of the above, VC offers up a good quick read: "Marines though the Lens of History".

POPSMilitary Service Training Ground For Sexual Predation This article is quite comprehensive in scope and deserves a full reading. A few more paragraphs from it follow this remark. "Yet for decades, in spite of the terrible numbers, the military has managed with astonishing success to get away with responding to grievances like Krause's with silence, or denial, or by blaming "a few bad apples." But when individual soldiers take the blame, the system gets off the hook. And it can be shown that the patterns of military sex crimes are old and widespread -- for generations, military service has transformed large numbers of American boys into sexual predators. So it seems reasonable to ask if perhaps there is something about military culture or training or experience that can be identified as causative, and then, perhaps, changed."

POPSObamacare 'Wrap-Up' Guts Conservatives Amendments
The wrap-up amendment expands powers granted to a brand new Medicare Commission endowing these bureaucrats with the ability to raise premiums on Medicare prescription drug coverage at will. Democrats had worked out a deal with hospitals in secret negotiations over the summer to exempt them from the extensive plans for cuts in Medicare rates. This “carve out” would exempt hospitals from these reductions but the CBO estimated the provision would add $11 billion to the overall cost of the bill. No problem for Dems, just rack up another $11 billion in stealth cuts to Medicare for an offset. Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.) offered an amendment that was agreed to in the committee markup without objection to shield veterans from increases in the cost of their medical care and reductions in access to treatment. In the wrap-up amendment, Democrats voted to gut the veteran protections, without the customary consultation to the amendment’s author, reducing the amendment to mere . . .

POPSRahm Emmanuel Runs the White House; But Who’s Running Rahm?
But President Obama’s campaign veterans still blamed him* for spreading harsh attacks against their candidate in the primary showdown with Mrs. Clinton last year. So Mr. Emanuel talked with Mrs. Clinton. *Mr. Blumenthal was out. Perhaps nothing illustrates how far Mr. Emanuel has come than that conversation last month. Sixteen years ago, it was Mrs. Clinton, then first lady, who helped have Mr. Emanuel demoted as a senior official in Bill Clinton’s White House after he ruffled feathers with his aggressive style. Now all these years later, it is Mr. Emanuel telling Mrs. Clinton what she cannot do as a member of the cabinet. Seven months after moving into his office in the West Wing, Emanuel is emerging as perhaps the most influential White House chief of staff in a generation. But with his prominence in almost everything important going on in Washington comes a high degree of risk. As the principal author of Mr. Obama’s do-everything-at-once strategy, he stands to

POPSWhat's trashed at Arlington National Cemetery
Left out in the rain to rot were crayon drawings by children who had lost a parent, photographs of soldiers with their babies, painted portraits and thank-you notes from grade-school kids to fallen soldiers they had never known. Colors of artworks ran together. Photos were blurred and wilted. Poems and letters were illegible wads of wet paper. A worker in a brown uniform wandered among the graves, blasting the headstones with a power washer without regard to what was left of the mementos -- or the obviously uncomfortable mourners looking on. Some items got further soaked. The worker blasted others across the grass. Many of them would end up in a black trash bin in the cemetery's service area. Arlington's poor treatment of the mementos and gifts -- testaments to the personal cost of the post-9/11 wars in the Middle East -- appeared to stand in contrast to practices at other cemeteries. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which runs 130 cemeteries across the country, asks people

POPSProgram Distorts Christianity It's rather typical these days to see distortions in mass media, since the "profession" is going through a transition in which a lot of veterans are leaving. Thus, what are left are the least-skilled in many cases. It shows.

POPSThe D-Day commemorations: The living and dead, comrades again more (at source): The political and media row over the 65th anniversary of D-Day has obliged us to ask, and answer, a difficult question. Why do we carry on commemorating events such as the Battle of Normandy? How should we do it? What will we do when we no longer have the old British men, and women – more than 600 of them – who marched in comradeship (and sometimes in tears) in Bayeux and Arromanches yesterday? Or, for that matter, the hundreds of American and Canadian veterans who paraded at Omaha and Juno?

POPS D-Day, June 6th ~ Sixty-Five Years Ago Rod Stewart Helps D-Day Veterans Despite years of rumors that he is very...ugh...frugal, and despite the fact that his own son called him "very cheap," rocker Rod Stewart has offered up £7,500 (a little over $11,000 USA dollars) to send veterans to the 65th commemoration of D-Day in France. The Daily Mail: Rod Stewart led a roll call of politicians, celebrities and generous members of the public backing the Daily Mail's campaign to send the D-Day veterans to Normandy. The 64-year-old singer said he was 'outraged' the Government had no plans to send an official delegation and offered £7,500 to send 15 Essex veterans to France in June. He said: 'These men sacrificed everything and we owe them this. My only condition is I'd like to meet them and talk to them as I'd be fascinated to hear about how they landed on their beaches.' Stewart's grandfather was decorated in the First World War, and his father and two brothers also served.

POPSD-Day veteran not going back to the beaches
First the Vets were being subsidised by the Heroes Return Charity, costs to cover a carer and one immediate family relative. Then a Blackpool Councillor Julian Mineur – sorry folk I ain’t making this up - gets involved and it all turns to doggee poo. The last time I saw Councillor Manure in action was in Rhyl where he was insulting a rather eloquent, distinguished former Women’s Army veteran who promised if that if he called her girlie once more she would smack his face. She was prevented from assaulting him by a former Royal Marine who was only too willing to do the lady’s bidding. The Councillor was trying to sell the Veterans Badge to the veteran and was getting a hostile reception along with the Labour MP for North Wales. It is amazing how these political types do not understand community or service unless it is wrapped in a wonder financial package for themselves. Expenses! Don’t mention expenses! Not only will some of the vets not be going, but Association heads with no affil

POPS Squirrel Posse Busted In The Act Ceglarek spotted the furry-tailed thief in action and followed him back to his nest, 45 feet up a spruce tree, which was bedecked in bunting. "If I didn't see it, and I didn't follow the squirrel, I never would have believed it." "Maybe they are trying to tell us it is going to be a hard winter," Ceglarek said of the robbing rodent.
