I wonder if some nutter will ever get hold of some of the DNA from some of these historical periods and do some successful cloning. It would be horrible for the clones.

840 CE: Trade between Viking Scandinavia and the Arab World
ouyangwulong
by ouyangwulong  4-9-2008
We take for granted that our world is more international today than it ever was before in history. Though our speed of trans-national communications, commerce and travel is truly staggering, ancient civilizations were not necessarily isolated islands. Understanding that the Arabs and Vikings, Romans and Chinese were all part of a single international system, not monolithic bastions of "clashing" civilizations is the first step towards understanding how we can live peacefully with each other today.

Vikings dressed flashier than previously thought
kelvin273
by kelvin273  2-26-2008    1
Frankly, I don't find the pictured outfit very sexy at all. I'm not sure if it's the model or the fact that it's very loose. Still, it's much more ornate than what you would associate with Vikings.

mickfinn
by mickfinn  2-20-2008    2
"Scientists (internationally speaking) are probably in the best situation they've been in for a long time to study and understand the causes of the Northern Lights," comments Dr Jim Wild of the University of Lancaster. "All of these projects (many of them led by the US) involve international collaboration. It's ironic that the UK has decided to choose now to basically wind-down science in this area."

The Rocky Whaling Fleet Horror Show
papananook
by papananook  1-26-2008
The whaling industry has no place in the 21st Century and certainly not in a sophisticated nation like Japan. Whaling is a primitive, cruel, economically senseless and barbaric practice. What is a major industrialized super power doing killing whales anyway? The only other people involved in this anachronistic bit of sadistic maritime madness are a few frustrated inbred Vikings in Northern Norway and the Danish Faeroe Islands. Even the Icelanders have seen fit to pack the harpoons away.

Did Sixth-Century Irish Monk Discover America?
merrie
by merrie  11-21-2007
But as time wore on, the Navigatio -- along with St. Brendan himself -- passed into the realm of legend. If Brendan had lived -- as most scholars assume -- surely he couldn’t have traveled across the treacherous North Atlantic with the technology available at the time. Certainly, he couldn’t have beaten the Vikings to North America. Ironically, it is Viking lore that lends support to the idea that Brendan was the first European in North America. Read the next page to find out about evidence for and against this idea. St. Brendan -- or Somebody One of the biggest problems with the idea that St. Brendan and his crew were the first Europeans to arrive in North America is the dearth of physical evidence to support this claim. Unlike the Vikings, there is no settlement that proves the Irish were here prior to other Europeans. At one time, however, tantalizing physical evidence did emerge. http://people.howstuffworks.com/irish-monk-america1.htm

Sen. James Inhofe::Global Warming Heretic
merrie
by merrie  10-13-2007    4
Inhofe recognizes that the Earth is warming, but sees this as part of the natural cycle. Inhofe mentioned the Medieval Warm Period -- 1000 to 1270 A.D. when the Vikings grew crops in Greenland. So he doesn't buy this 12,000-year high. His office referred me to a piece University of Oklahoma geology professor David Deming penned for the Normal Transcript that noted, "The fact that the thermometer wasn't invented until the year 1714 ought to give us pause when evaluating this remarkable claim." The Times' "mainstream scientists" line undermines the editorial's credibility as it ignores the likes of MIT climate scientist Richard S. Lindzen, who argues that clouds and water vapor will counteract greenhouse-gas emissions. Ditto the 60 Canadian scientists who wrote to Prime Minister Stephen Harper that there is no " 'consensus' among climate scientists."
