Another Republican says health care reform will destroy America. Rep. Broun, that is.
ratilfar
by ratilfar  11-4-2009    1
Right -- if a liberal like Grayson calls out Republicans (who have no health care plan), they get their freak on. But I guess they have already been immunized to conservative insanity. Oh, and we have Rep. Gohmert saying this: Dems Would Allow Seniors To "Die Off More Quickly" This is standard conservative behavior that never gets mentioned by the media. It only comes up when a liberal is attacked and then they spend 24-48 hours to defend themselves and are forced to use these outrageous statement made by Republicans. And of course they have no traction, because of the defensive position the media puts liberals in.

Indian Engineer 'builds' new glaciers via Cakebelly (Amplify)
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  10-29-2009
cakebelly says: “So far, Mr Norphel’s glaciers have been able to each store up to one million cubic feet of ice, which in turn can irrigate 200 hectares of farm land. For farmers, that can make the difference between crop failure and a bumper crop of more than 1,000 tons of wheat. The “iceman” says he has seen the effects of global warming on farmland as snows have become thinner on the ground and ice rivers have melted away never to return. His own work has now been recognised by the Indian government, which has given him £16,000 to build five new glaciers. But time is his enemy, he told The Hindustan Times. “I’m planning to train villagers with instruction CDs that I have made, so that I can pass on the knowledge before I die,” he said. “

WHAT IS TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE?

An understanding of traditional knowledge and how it differs from non-indigenous knowledge is an important basis for determining how to use it. Knowing what it contains and how it is acquired and held is fundamental to being able to make good use of the knowledge and to encourage all parties to be aware of the added value its use will bring.

Bill and Melinda Gates pledge 120 million to boost African, Indian farmers

Oh noez. Corporate America, Bill Gates, is dropping 120 million to help Africa and India. So liberals, this must horrify you right? Because corporations are "evil" in your nightmares or did you confuse it with an episode of "Fringe". Moan for me libs. Moan about America and whine because Americans, Bill and Melinda Gates, just blew your mind. Where's that fatty Michael Moore-on anyway? Probably sitting in Krispy Kreme or Dominoes Pizza stuffing his fat face. I know this news isn't as important as the Christians eating fried chicken at the Baptist Church, but who could compete with a horror show like that. Waaaaahhhhhh corporations......waaaaahhhhhh Christians........wahhhhhhh Rush Limbaugh.......waaaaaahhhhhhhhhh. Boohoo. Cry me a river.

Obama Quietly Deploying 13,000 More US troops to Afghanistan
merrie
by merrie  10-14-2009    1
In addition to the deployments under way, McChrystal has also requested an extra 40,000 troops he says are necessary to prevent the country falling into the hands of the Taliban. The Afghanistan president Hamid Karzai, today expressed support for McChrystal's request. "I'm fully behind him for what he's seeking in this report," Karzai told ABC's Good Morning America. As part of the internal debate, the US defence secretary, Robert Gates, who is cautiously supporting McChrystal, is due to meet later today the vice-president Joe Biden, who is opposed to the troop increase and favours a shift in priority to tracking down al-Qaida in Pakistan. A decision on McChrystal's troop request appears to have been postponed for a few weeks. Any extra troops will come as a result of a parallel reduction in the number of US troops in Iraq. A US military planner told the Army Times: "We've increased forces in Afghanistan before we've reduced forces in Iraq in a meaningful way.

Afghan outlook bleak as Taliban grabs territory
jatfla
by jatfla  10-11-2009
While Obama plans his Peace Prize speech, our declared enemy is defeating our military for lack of commitment by their Commander-in-Chief. This is a travesty. The Taliban will, again, make Afghanistan it's launching site for terror attacks against the West, enslave it's population, and the soldiers who gave their lives there will have done it for nothing. All because of a lack of will. Well Ms Michelle says that she is now proud of America....I couldn't be more ashamed of her husband's treachery and abandonment. This is aiding our enemies and undermining the American soldier. Shame! This is Vietnam times TEN.

Sex slavery usually gets the headlines and is serious - to be sure - but most modern slavery involves labor slaves to supply many of us with what we thought were legitimate low cost goods and services at places like Wal-Mart who spends way too much in trying to appear family friendly of late since we and they have practically underwritten much of the outsourcing of what used to be jobs in the US. Rant done, its - grin - safe again.

US Hypocrisy Astonishes the World
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  9-8-2009    7
The exceptional “virtuous nation” does not think it is insensitive for America’s bombs to blow innocent villagers to pieces. What does the world think of the United States? The US government is like a criminal who accuses the police of his crime when he is arrested or a sociopathic abuser who blames the victim. It is a known fact that the CIA has violated US law and international law with its assassinations, kidnappings and torture. But it is not this criminal agency that will be held accountable. Instead, those who will be punished will be those moral beings who, appalled at the illegality and inhumanity of the CIA, leaked the evidence of the agency’s crimes. America uber alles! No one counts but us (and Israel). The deaths we inflict and the pain and suffering we bring to others are merely collateral damage on the bloody path to American hegemony.

200 rural schools to close by 2014
cakebelly
by cakebelly  9-1-2009
cont: The report's authors claim that local authorities are ignoring an edict made by ministers in 1998 which urged them to presume when making decisions that rural schools should stay open. Mervyn Benford, from the small schools association, said: "Wholesale closures, banned by the Government 10 years ago, have returned to haunt the rural education landscape." The housing federation said authorities needed to address the housing needs of communities and ensure villages were sustainable. "We've already seen village shops and pubs close in record numbers and, if the schools close too, community life in many rural areas will be wiped out," said the federation's director, Ruth Davison. She said that the number of people waiting for affordable homes in rural communities had risen to 750,000.

The So Called Liberal Media XXVIIII: Why Villagers are clueless

by ratilfar  9-1-2009    1
Those of you who remember Paul Krugman's often harsh criticisms of Obama during the election campaign might be surprised to read Howard Kurtz's media column which puts him first among the disappointed former Obama cheerleaders. Krugman has certainly been critical of Obama's performance in office, but this is only news for Kurtz, not people familiar with Krugman's writings. All Villagers aren't wrong in everything they write obviously, certainly not Kurtz, but this latest error is laughable. I can understand if it was a matter of interpretation, but come on Howard, this one wasn't even close to being on the mark. (h/t Atrios)

Socialites Without Borders Teach Rwandans How To Mingle

Arriving on private jets from their headquarters in Martha's Vineyard, volunteers from Socialites Without Borders touched down in northern Rwanda early Sunday morning. Following an extravagant luncheon held in their honor, the charitable luminaries were driven by limousine to a nearby refugee camp, where they provided impoverished villagers with emergency lessons in everything from making small talk, to name-dropping, to drastically improving one's life by marrying a wealthy steel magnate. "Always remember to keep things light and breezy when mingling," Danielle Watters, a real estate heiress, was overheard advising a group of war-ravaged amputees. "Talk about where you recently summered, or what boarding school you went to. When you feel at a loss for words, perhaps try remarking on the stunning architecture of the tent you're in." Hezbollah Readies for War as UN Can Only Observe
merrie
by merrie  8-26-2009    3
Hezbollah, which has the backing of Iran and Syria, is rebuilding its force in the south, undaunted by its loss in Lebanon’s June elections, in which a pro-U.S. coalition won a parliamentary majority. The peacekeepers’ stay in south Lebanon expires on Aug. 31 and the UN Security Council must decide whether to extend it without change or authorize them to impose the weapons ban by force even without the support of the Lebanese army. Free of Hezbollah The 12,000 UN soldiers were sent to Lebanon after a 2006 war with Israel that began when Hezbollah, which the U.S. and Israel consider a terrorist organization, captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid. After the fighting ended, the Security Council passed a resolution prohibiting “weapons or authority in Lebanon other than that of the Lebanese state.” The peacekeepers were deployed to keep south Lebanon free of Hezbollah’s militia and arms, a role they have to perform with the cooperation of the Lebanese army.

Can One Pill Tame the Illness No One Wants to Talk About?
BobbyRutan

More: Exactly how zinc stops diarrhea is not entirely clear. Olivier Fontaine, a diarrhea specialist for the WHO, believes that since the mineral is an essential ingredient in about 300 enzymes, boosting zinc levels strengthens the body's immunity, thus preventing diarrhea from turning deadly. A single course apparently also staves off further bouts of diarrhea for about three months — long enough to see a community through the deadly rainy seasons. Contrast that with ORT, which is extremely effective in replacing fluids and nutrients but offers no quick end to the diarrhea itself. ORT has another drawback: crucially in cultures where seeing is believing, it offers no quick evidence that a patient is recovering Scientists first hit on zinc's effectiveness in the early 1990s, when researchers from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health in Baltimore, Md., gave children in New Delhi a daily dose of syrup containing 20 mg of zinc. The rate of diarrhea dropped dramatic
